funds to provide legal representation for child
victims of domestic abuse who were also in need of
access to medical care. Episcopal Community
Services used its funds to provide in-home nursing
assessments and in-home nursing care to homebound elderly in Montgomery County. Family
Services of Montgomery County used its funds to
provide in home counseling to homebound seniors
in Montgomery County who were also suffering
from depression.
Temple University Intergenerational Program
used its fund to increase its volunteer base of college students who are trained to provide respite
care for families caring for the chronically ill in
their homes. Unitarian Universalist House of the
Joseph Priestly District used its funds to initiate a
supervised physical exercise program in the homes
of neighboring elderly. Women of Faith and Hope
used its funds to increase its outreach to women in
northwest Philadelphia at risk for breast cancer.
And finally, the YMCA of Roxborough used its
funds to purchase child-sized exercise equipment to
initiate a program to reduce childhood obesity, as
well as provide scholarship funds for that program.
What a year it was!
n
First United Methodist Church of Germantown
used its funds to bolster its comprehensive after

Service used its fund to offer free home assessment
and abatement to homebound seniors in Germantown and Mount Airy.

BACK TO THE FUTURE
Creating the Chestnut Hill Health Care Foundation,
the charitable successor to the Chestnut Hill
Hospital has been a fantastic opportunity as well as
an awesome responsibility. Our first year was filled
with the wonder and excitement of boldness and
newness and with, at times, the despair, the frustration, and the sense of loss of moving from a hospital
environment to one of community health.
In some ways, the creation of the Foundation represented a return to the roots of health care in the
greater Chestnut Hill area.
In the early 1900s, Chestnut Hill residents traveled a
day by horse and buggy or several hours by train to
Pennsylvania Hospital, The Hospital of the
University of Pennsylvania, and Thomas Jefferson
Hospital. Yet, a group of people, including the rector
of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, some stock brokers,
attorneys, and two physicians, felt that the community would be served better if it had its own hospital. A
hospital in the 1900s was not the hospital that exists
today. It was a community service endeavor, not just
an inpatient acute care facility.
As we read the records of Radcliffe Cheston, M.D.,
one of the founders of Chestnut Hill Hospital, who
drove his horse and buggy the hour distance into
Germantown to treat patients; of the Red Cross nurses
going up and down the hills of Manayunk and
Roxborough to make sure children were getting their
inoculations against polio; of the controversial young
women who desired to become doctors who learned
anatomy by examining cardboard cadavers (no wellbred young woman would be allowed to view a naked
human body, albeit dead) at the progressive Quaker
directed Women’s Medical College in East Falls; of
the efforts of Carson Valley School in Flourtown to
help orphaned girls find occupation, meaning and
purpose in life; and of the efforts of Episcopal
Community Services to reach out to families in need
in northwest Philadelphia as well as Montgomery
County—we realized that in our efforts to improve
the health status of our community, we were back to
our roots.
St. Catherine Laboure Medical Clinic in Germantown, offering care to those without insurance.
While at the turn of the century, Red Cross nurses
climbed the hills of Manayunk, the Foundation
funded North Light Community Center in Manayunk,
providing after school care and counseling to the
children and families of Roxborough and Manayunk.
While the Carson Valley School no longer shelters
orphaned girls, it does provide an outreach program
for medical assistance which the Foundation has
funded. And the Foundation also funded Episcopal
Community Services for its home care outreach to
the elderly in Montgomery County. Please read about
them and others in this, our first annual report.
In 2005-2006 we spent more than $600,000 in our
grant making efforts. This amount includes 100% of
the monies raised in our annual fund raising efforts.
In 2006-2007 we will do more.
We appreciate the support many in the community
have given the Foundation during its first year. This
includes our donors, volunteers from the Friends of
the Foundation, others who have shown interest in
our work and our handful of loyal employees. We
thank you for joining us in our efforts to improve the
health of our community.
Sincerely,
But, we also realized that, in our efforts to address
the current needs of our community we are back to
the future. Hospitals have come and gone; in our
service area alone, four acute care hospitals have
closed. The health care needs of the community
remain, perhaps have increased.
We are proud that in the year July 1, 2005 through
July 30, 2006, we have helped 27 organizations provide services to 6789 individuals in need. Some of
those organizations go right back to our roots. While
Radcliffe Cheston drove his buggy into Germantown, the Foundation provided funds for
