The staff at Grapeview School introduced a new literacy initiative to the students of Grade 5, 6, 7, and 8 during the 2006-2007 school year. This program gave an opportunity for students to sit with their peers and read. Throughout the 16 weeks that this program ran, we awarded m any prizes to students for reading and for com pleting different literacy based activities. Each student was given a booklet to keep track of their points and to show how each point is rewarded. Students were invited to participate in a Grapeview Reads! kick-off party at the beginning of Decem ber and a Valentine’s Day contest with a grand prize of a 7" portable DVD player and a pizza party. As well as these special events, we continued to tally points and give out prizes according to the points accum ulated at the end of each m onth. For the 2007-2008 school year, we will be running Grapeview Reads beginning Decem ber 4 th. On this date, we will be having our Kick Off party for our grade 6, 7 and 8 students. SPELLING BEE at GRAPEVIEW Students and staff at Grapeview were introduced to Spelling Bee of Canada in March of 2007. Spelling Bee of Canada is an educational, non-profit, charitable organization that encourages youth, parents, teachers and the community to participate in our students education. Spelling Bee of Canada organizes annual spelling bees aimed at children and youth, aged between 6 and 14. Participants are placed into one of three categories: Primary (age 6-8), Junior (age 9-11) and Intermediate (age 12-14). At the time of the Regional Spelling Bee, held at Grapeview School in April 2007, our school had almost 50 students representing all three categories. These students worked hard for 5 weeks on a variety of activities and “mock” spelling bees. Grapeview students were able to participate in a “mock” spelling bee at our school, competing with students within our school community. After our “mock” spelling bee, Grapeview School hosted a Regional Spelling Bee, which had three schools from our School Board participate. Even with the short period of time for our students to learn words, they were very successful. Our Primary and Junior students placed within the top 10 in each of their divisions. Our only Intermediate participant, placed 2nd place over all. Unfortunately none of our students were able to continue competing in the Spelling Bee in Toronto. For the 2007-2008 school year, we will be running a Spelling Bee Club from November to January. In January, we will be having a “mock” spelling bee for our students within our school community and will be picking students to continue on to compete in our Regional Spelling Bee, which will be held in April 2008. Good Luck to all Grapeview Spelling Bee participants!
