Rabbi Silverman’s Message
From parlor meetings to kiddush to one-on-one coffee dates, it
has been a true pleasure meeting many of you this summer. My
husband Josh, our daughter Anna, and I quickly
figured out what you already know – Sharon is
a wonderful place to spend time, raise a family,
and be part of a community. We have so enjoyed
summer afternoons at the lake with many of you
and look forward to welcoming you into our home
in the future months. Thank you for your very
warm welcome.
My introductory few months at Temple Israel have
been predominantly about building community.
From getting the Religious School up and running to meeting
many of you, from connecting over Shabbat lunch to crafting
new programs that will reach more of our members, I’ve
been learning more and more about what an extraordinary
community Temple Israel is and can be.
I’m excited to share a number of updates with you. We have
several new staff members to introduce—more info on all of
them can be found on our website. In particular, please join me
in welcoming Dale Rosenberg as Religious School Principal,
and Ariel Holman as Youth Group Coordinator. We have been
working hard all summer to get the school up and running and
to put a strong youth group in place. We’ve been working closely
with Hertz Director Lisa Kritz to craft curriculum connections
between Hertz Nursery School and the Religious School, to
make the transition for our kids more seamless
and natural.
Shorashim (roots), formerly the Young Families
Chavurah, has been hard at work building a
calendar for the fall. Events include apple picking,
a Sukkah party, a Shabbat afternoon / Havdalah /
bonfire, and a New Year’s Eve party.
Working together with the school staff and
the board, we’re proud to announce a Shabbat
morning youth services program. Starting
this fall, we will regularly have three Shabbat morning youth
services: Tot Shabbat for pre-schoolers and their families;
Mini-Minyan for children in kindergarten through 2nd grade,
accompanied by an adult; and Jr. Congregation for students in
grades 3-6, accompanied by an adult. We’re looking forward to
sharing a High Holy Day version of these services as well.
As the year begins to unfold, I invite you to be in conversation
with me about what is working, what still needs some tweaking,
what you’d like to see, and how you’d like to participate in the
ongoing building of this community. Shana Tova u’metukah –
wishing you a sweet, happy and healthy New Year.

The High Holy Days are filled with mystery. As my rate of

These are just three of an indefinite number of mysteries, never

will start at 8:30pm, featuring Ralf Horlemann, Consul
General of Germany to New England as guest speaker.
Services to follow, beginning 10-10:30pm.
Main Services
Main services will start together, 8:30am on both days of Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur, in Berger Hall before we continue
our custom of dividing into multiple services for the Torah
service. Everyone is invited to join in Berger Hall and then
follow the Torahs to other services. As in past years, our main
services in the Weissman-Davis Sanctuary, Berger Hall, and
Founders Hall will be by assigned seating and led by clergy.
•
•
This year, as every year, Berger Hall will be filled with
the sounds of tefillah (prayer) and the powerful sense of
community that comes from being together. This year,
with our seating re-oriented in the direction of Pond Street
(facing east!), we will all be closer together and many
will be much closer to the bimah. This will enhance our
opportunity to feel the pull of the common prayer of the
congregation, and the blessing of being at home with one
another.
The Engagement Service, previously known as Kesher
Service or Founders Hall Service will, as always, provide
a warm, participatory davening and learning experience
for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This year we will
have the opportunity for even greater learning and
participation: Mark your calendar for two pre-holiday
workshops – one to unpack the flow of the mahzor and
one to write meditations, reflections, and poetry to bring
ever more meaning to our Yammim Nora’im. Join Rabbi
Gordon for these classes, September 1 and 8, 7:45pm at
Temple Israel.
•
Services on the first day Rosh Hashanah and on Yom
Kippur in the Sanctuary will be very similar in spirit and
feel to the service in Berger Hall.

In addition to these three services, a lay-led, small group
Chavurah service will be held in the Hertz Nursery School
space throughout the High Holy Days.
While most of our seating is assigned, we encourage all
congregants to visit the different services and find moments
that speak to your heart and head. Don’t feel that you need to

Family and Youth Services
An early Young Families Service, geared towards preschoolers
and their parents, will be offered both mornings of Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur. A mix of stories, songs, and
prayer, this service is aimed towards children ages 2-5
(accompanied by their favorite adults) and will meet in
Founders Hall from 9:00-10:00am.
Looking for Family Services? All three mornings from 10:1511:30, we will offer services geared to different ages of children
with their families. Youth services are best experienced (for
student, adults, and the community) when students share in
the service with a trusted adult. If parents would prefer to
daven in one of the main services, please consider asking a
grandparent, friend, or other member of our community to
join your child in services. Occasionally students do better
unaccompanied by parents. In those cases, please use your best
judgment and make a decision that is right for your child. Feel
free to reach out to Rabbi Silverman with any questions.

new truths about ourselves.
Quiet Room
A quiet room will be available in the Religious School wing for
parents to bring their littlest children – those too young for
babysitting, who might need a break from services.
While the seating in the Family Services will not be
assigned, we need to know how many people will be
participating in these services. Participants in these
services will not be receiving assigned seats in Berger Hall,
the Sanctuary, or Founders Hall. However, we hope that
when these services conclude, people will take advantage
of an open seating section in Berger Hall, or empty seats
in the Sanctuary or in Founders Hall. Ready to sign up
for one or both of our family services, Mini-Minyan or Jr.
Congregation? Please sign-up online:
www.tisharon.org/holidays.
Kids Programming will keep your child (grades K-6)
engaged and having fun from 11:30-1:00pm. Offered after
Mini-Minyan and Jr. Congregation, Kids Programming
allows parents to focus their attention on the Holy Days
while their children remain at synagogue.
Our Babysitting provides an environment in which children
(ages 2-5) are comfortable and parents are free to focus their
attention on the High Holy Days. Our program provides
supervision by adults and teen assistants, and is available
from 9:30-1:00pm on both days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom
Kippur. Only those who have registered and pre-paid will
be able to enter so that we’re able to ensure that we have the
proper number of adults per children and can provide a safe
environment. The cost is $10/child or a cap of $25/family, which
includes all three days of care. Registrations are due now: www.
tisharon.org/holidays.
This quiet space is also available to nursing parents. Signage will
be posted so that all who need to find and make use of this room
are able to do so during the High Holy Days. We appreciate your
cooperation in helping keep this space quiet and calm.
Tashlikh
Join us at the Lake for Tahlikh services, followed by mincha.
Temple Israel will provide the crumbs! (Ma’ariv will meet back
at the synagogue.)
Parking
For the High Holy Days, Temple Israel’s entire parking lot is reserved for those with state-issued disability placards and license
plates or those who request a parking placard from the Temple
office. If you require a parking placard, please contact Marla in
the office (781-784-3986 or [email protected]).
Services For the Homebound
Any homebound member of Temple Israel can hear the Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur services conducted in the
Sanctuary through our PhoneLink system.
Connecting from home to the synagogue only requires a touch
tone phone. The dial-in number, passcode instructions, and
service schedule will be mailed to anyone wishing to hear any or
all parts of the services.
Please make your reservation through the Temple Office by
September 28. When you make your reservation, please let us
know if you also require a mahzor. The mahzor will be delivered
to you before the High Holy Days.
Tickets
High Holy Day tickets will be mailed the week of September 21.
What’s Your Jewish Name?
Teen and 20s/30s Services
Teen Services will be held on the both days of Rosh Hashanah
and on Yom Kippur, conducted by youth leaders in the
Rosenstein Chapel, from 10:15-11:30am. Rabbi Silverman
encourages any teens interested in this service to contact her for
more information.
We know many, but not all, Hebrew/Yiddish/Jewish names
for our congregants. We know many, but not all, of the kohens and levis. Why do we want to know this? We’re making
Aliyah Cards, which will allow our service leaders to call our
members up for their honor quickly and easily, without having to pause to ask for names.
Community members in their 20s and 30s are invited on the
first day of Rosh Hashanah for a closed door, Open Space
conversation about the place of Jewish identity, spirituality,
and community in our own lives. Facilitated by Rabbi Adam
We would like every adult member of Temple Israel (everyone
over the age of bar/bat mitzvah) to fill out our quick form:

out - thank you!).

Youth
New beginnings, new opportunities, and excitement abound this time of year. The
Youth Committee of Temple Israel is no exception as we welcome Rabbi Rachel
Silverman, our new Associate Rabbi / Director of Community Engagement. We are
excited to have her focusing on youth programming and eagerly anticipate her bringing new ideas and related expertise. We also welcome Ariel Holman as our new Youth
Coordinator. A former USYer herself, Ariel will be working closely with Rabbi Silverman to deliver all kinds of youth programs – both new and the tried and true favorites! Ariel, a recent graduate of Muhlenberg College, comes to us with an Education
and Theatre background and lots of exciting ideas. There is a special parlor meeting, scheduled specifically for teens in high school (not just USYers), to meet Rabbi
Silverman and Ariel and talk about what type of programming teens are interested in
seeing at TI. RSVP online: www.tisharon.org/events.
As excited as we are to get to know our new staff, we are sorry to say goodbye to
youth staff who have been a strong and integral part of our youth programming.
Shoshana Edelson will not be returning as USY Advisor this year. Shoshana brought
a passion, energy, and warmth to our youth that showed how deeply she cared about
each member of our USY Chapter. We would also like to thank Shosh Jacob, who
filled the role of Interim Youth Director for the last two years. When we suddenly
found ourselves without a Youth Director, Shosh jumped right in! Her love of USY
enabled us to navigate through a tricky transition with ease. We are happy that they
are both members of our community and we will continue to see them around TI.
We hope you will join us for some of our programs this year!

Brotherhood
We closed out last year with a wonderful
celebration honoring Cantor Dress as the
Brotherhood’s Man of the Year. The evening was moving and at times hilarious,
paying tribute to a man who has given
much of his time to the Brotherhood and
Temple Israel. We were fortunate to have
several of the Cantor’s family join us in
roasting him. The fact that Berger Hall
was overflowing was a sign of the love for
Cantor Dress and confirmation that the
honor was well deserved.
This summer the Brotherhood was
recognized by the Federation of Jewish
Men’s Clubs as a recipient of the Quality Club Award. The award is given
each year to member clubs who meet
established criteria at the international,
regional, and local levels. The award was
developed to strengthen and encourage
member clubs to offer a variety of activities at the local level and to participate
in regional and FJMC programs. Only
through the commitment of so many of
our members were we able to win this
award.

COMMUNITY
Social Action
The Temple Israel community is committed to addressing the issue of food
insecurity, which continues to be significant in the United States. Mazon, a
Jewish organization dedicated to alleviating hunger, estimates that one in seven
Americans do not have enough to eat,
including over 15 million children. When
we provide food relief to families in need,
it has a tremendous impact and frees up
limited resources for other necessities,
such as housing and clothing costs.
In order to help those experiencing food
insecurity, Temple Israel continues to
support Family Table, Greater Boston’s
kosher food pantry coordinated by
Jewish Family and Children’s Service
(JF&CS). Once again, we will be collecting donations of tuna, pasta, and other
non-perishable foods during the High
Holidays and throughout the year and
would appreciate your support. Temple
Israel has committed to donating 60
boxes of pasta and 35 cans of tuna to
Family Table on a monthly basis.
Please look out for our collection bags
that will be placed on the chairs during
Rosh Hashanah, which you can fill with
pasta and tuna and return to Temple
Israel during the week or on Kol Nidre
evening. Your donations are most appreciated and have a significant impact
in helping Temple Israel support Family
Table.
We also encourage individuals and families to volunteer directly at Family Table
South, which is hosted at Temple Beth
Abraham in Canton and provides a convenient location for South Area residents
to both access the support of the pantry
and volunteer and support the organization. If you are interested in learning
more about how you can participate,
please contact socialaction@tisharon.
org or [email protected] or call
781-693-5593.
The following are the 2016-2017 Family
Table South Distribution Dates (all Sunday mornings). Please time your dropoffs of pasta and tuna at Temple Israel
accordingly:
September 25, 2016; October 23, 2016;
November 20, 2016; December 18, 2016;
January 29, 2017; February 26, 2017;
March 26, 2017; April 30, 2017; May 21,
2017; June 25, 2017; July 23, 2017.
Temple Israel’s Social Action Committee
will also be exploring additional social
action initiatives for the coming year. If
you are interested in helping out or have
ideas to pursue, please contact the social
action co-chairs, Amy Katz and Ruth
Zakarin, at [email protected].
Shir Rhythm A Cappella
Calling all singers! Shir Rhythm a cappella is holding fall auditions, September 12
and 13. We are Temple Israel’s premiere co-ed a cappella group, focusing on a variety
of musical styles including Jewish (sacred and folk) and Classic Rock. Members of
Shir Rhythm love to perform for audiences of all ages. We are a multi-generational,
diverse group of singers and we all have one thing in common: we love to sing,
harmonize, and have fun! We invite you to share in our music and hope that we can
touch your heart in some way.
Shir Rhythm is open to all in the community over the age of 21 with strong vocal ability and musical knowledge. If anyone has ever told you that you have a nice
voice, but you have never been in a singing group before, that’s ok too! Rehearsals are
weekly on Thursdays, 7:30-9:30pm. Audition sign-ups for the evenings of Sept 12 and
13 can be found online: www.tisharon.org/shir-rhythm. We are looking for all parts:
soprano, alto, tenor and bass. Please feel free to email Lisa Einstein at LEinstein8@
gmail.com with any questions.

Gamm Concert
As Temple Israel’s Cultural Arts Committee and Hazak are pleased to announce that the annual Sandra Gamm Memorial
Concert will be held at 4:00pm on Sunday, December 4, 2016. The concert is sponsored and funded by the Sandra Gamm
Memorial Fund for Music and the Creative Arts.
This year’s concert will feature the incredible talent of Gon Halevi, an acclaimed Israeli singer, pianist, composer, and actor.
Accompanied by popular New York-based musicians – cellist Jessie Reagan Mann, recorder virtuoso Tali Rubinstein, and vocalist
Mizuho Takeshita -- Gon will perform a collection of new arrangements of beloved popular songs from Israel and the United
States entitled “The Great Israeli American Songbook.” The concert has been performed in numerous venues in this country and
abroad to marvelous reviews and standing ovations, and is sure to delight Temple Israel attendees with its mix of nostalgia and
originality.
Additional information regarding the concert – including links to Gon Halevi’s music and information concerning admission to
the event – will be provided in the November/December edition of the Luach and by email and other means of communication
to Temple members starting in November. Questions concerning the event should be directed to the Cultural Arts Committee
([email protected]).
Jewish War Veterans
The membership of Sharon Post 735,
Jewish War Veterans of the United States,
is comprised of residents of Sharon,
Stoughton, and other surrounding
towns. Although our numbers are aging,
we remain a vital organization. One of
our primary accomplishments is our
semiannual solicitation of funds for
the Veterans Administration Brockton
Voluntary Services, which we hold in
the days just prior to Memorial Day and
Veterans Day. Over the years, we have
presented well over $21,000 to provide
special equipment and other services
not supplied by the government to
hospitalized veterans at the Brockton
facility. Most of our members are
veterans from the Korean War era with
a few World War 2 vets and also some
from the Vietnam and more recent
conflicts. We are always looking to
increase our membership to better enable
us to continue our
good works. There are
membership options for
both veterans and nonveterans alike including
those who are Jewish
US citizens and are
veterans of the armed
forces of our allies
which of course include
the IDF!
As Commander of Sharon Post 735,
and having recently been elected Junior
Vice Commander for the Department
of Massachusetts, I invite all of those
who are eligible for membership or who
are interested in supporting the JWV as
a patron to contact me at Jeffrey.weit@

Jewish War Veterans of the USA (JWV)
is the voice of the Jewish serviceperson
and friend to all veterans. Formed in
Ner Tamid Community Day School
New York in 1896 after the
Spanish American War, the
Jewish veteran group was
known as the Hebrew Union
Veterans Association. The
union fought anti-Semitism
in the Armed Forces and the
general public. Seeking to
prove that Jews do proudly
serve and fight in the US
Armed Forces, the union
evolved with each war, eventually taking
the name we know today – JWV. With
over 120 years of service, JWV is the
oldest, continuously operating Veteran

Your community’s K-8 Jewish day school housed right here in Temple Israel, is
entering our third year with increased enrollment and exciting new programs! Ner
Tamid Community Day School is a proud member of the national Solomon Schechter

paired with an equally engaging Judaics and Hebrew language curriculum. What
makes our school most unique are the experiences we give our children. At Ner

students also get the chance to learn together with children of different ages. If you have not considered

RINATI Israeli Folk Dance Ensemble
If you’ve been at Temple Israel on a Thursday evening, you may
have heard strains of Israeli music emanating from Founders
Hall and wondered what it’s all about. Most Thursday nights
throughout the year, we run an Israeli folk dance session from
8:00-9:30pm. All ages and all levels of experience are welcome!
Typically, we do easier dances and have some teaching in the
first half of the evening and do intermediate/advanced dancing
during the latter half. No partners are required, as the dances
are circle and line dances. Wear (or bring) dry, comfortable
shoes. Suggested donation is $3 per session.
And yes, we now have a name: Rina is the Hebrew name for
“joy,” and we added “TI” to represent our affiliation with
Temple Israel.
Israeli folk dance began amongst the chalutzim (pioneers) in
the early 1900s, prior to the establishment of the State of Israel.

Serkin or Tova Sperber at [email protected].
If someone is looking for a job in a field that has a job opening,
the office staff (your friendly, community shadkhan or matchmaker) will conntect the two people via an introductory email.
Otherwise, jobs, names, and contact information will remain
confidential.
We hope this will help those in our community find interesting,
meaningful employment! Thank you for your assistance with

By the 1940s, there were folk dance festivals taking place on
kibbutzim in Israel, with Israeli choreographers creating their
own original dances. Israeli folk dance was influenced by surrounding cultures, as well as the countries of origin of arriving
immigrants. Persian, Latin, Indian, and many other dance styles
have been incorporated into Israeli folk dance. Just as the Israeli
nation has welcomed Jews from all over the world to its shores,
so too has Israeli folk dance evolved to include influences from
cultures throughout the world.
Don’t worry if your dance moves are not like Baryshnikov. Folk
dancing is about having fun, being part of a community, and
feeling connected to Israel. The most important dance move is
to have a smile on your face; don’t worry about what your feet
are doing!

Supporting Holocaust Education and
Programming at Temple Israel
“When you to go to bed at night, ask yourself what have
you done for somebody else today?” – Marion Mayer Katz
Temple Israel has had two funds – the Holocaust Memorial
Fund and the Mayer Katz Holocaust & Jewish History
Collections Fund – with overlapping missions. The former
supported the annual Yom HaShoah program, while the latter,
founded in 1998 by the children of Marion (z”l) and Dr. Harvey
Katz in their honor, focused on growing specific collections in
our library.
As has become clear to the Katz family and our synagogue
March of the Living
BOSTON, MASS. (issued June 2016) – Over 10,000 Jewish
teens ages 17-18 from 40 countries participated in the 2016
March of the Living (MOTL). This memorable and moving
trip of a lifetime annually brings teens from haunting Nazi
concentration camps and ghost-like shtetls to the miracles of
modern Israel.
At a recent community meeting organized by Gann Academy
in Waltham (Mass.), and the Mass. Chapter of MOTL (http://
motlnewengland.org), local teen participants shared their
experiences from the two-week trip with parents, teachers,
rabbis, scholarship donors, and fellow students. A highlight
was a presentation by Holocaust survivor Israel ‘Izzy’ Arbeiter
of Newton, who lost most of his family at the Auschwitz camp
that participants visited.
The trip coincides with Holocaust Remembrance Day in
Poland, followed a week later in Israel with Israel Memorial
Day and Israel Independence Day. The 2017 March is set for
April 24 to May 2.
The recent recap briefing occurred at Gann’s Arbeiter Gallery
where museum-quality panels trace Arbeiter’s journey from
a peaceful 1930s Poland through World War II, and his
emigration to America. An exhibit of artifacts from that era is
on display.
For Mass. MOTL Chairman Irv Kempner of Sharon, son of
Holocaust survivors, this was his sixth trip. “I’m pleased that
we had 10 Mass. participants, but we need to do a much better
job on recruitment and fundraising. Panama sent 40 teens.
There were eight busloads from Montreal and Toronto,” he said.
Kempner’s goal for 2017 is to recruit at least 20 teens from
across the Bay State – double this year’s figure – and to triple
the scholarship total: “For 2016, we raised $22,000. Next year, if
we raise $60,000, we can pay half the cost for each participant.”
The local committee has already started 2017 scholarship
solicitations.
leadership, we believe the funds can do more good in both
honoring Marion’s memory and dedication to Holocaust
education and supporting Temple Israel’s needs by merging.
The combined fund, renamed the Marion Mayer Katz
Holocaust Fund, will achieve this by offering programming
throughout the year in addition to continuing support of the
Yom HaShoah program.
We appreciate and thank you for your continued support of
these funds, now combined, as we educate future generations
about the Holocaust and remember the legacy of all survivors.
Thank you,
Dr. Harvey Katz, Tamara Katz Fellman, Dr. David E. Katz, and
Tanya Hitter
One of this year’s participants, Tovya, said, “The March was
the culmination of my entire Jewish education – a real-life
manifestation of my heritage. It expanded my understanding
of the miraculous revival of our nation. I plan to share this new
perspective with peers, friends – anyone who will listen.”
Another teen, Halle, said, “This was an amazing experience.
We were with a survivor who shared her experience – similar to
my grandfather. I saw the Holocaust in a new way. The trip will
keep the memory and lessons of the Holocaust alive.”
Yael told the audience, “On Shabbat morning in Krakow, I saw
on the bimah a Holocaust survivor, a man who as a GI had
liberated Mathausen, the IDF choir and cantor, and Michael
Oren (former Israeli ambassador to the U. S. and current
member of the Knesset). I looked at the woman next to me, a
stranger. We embraced and cried. This captures the essence of
the March.”
Another teen said, “The March gave me an appreciation for the
Jewish State, and allowed me to bond with Jewish teens from
around the world.” And another said, “The program exceeded
my expectations. I’ve already started spreading the word about
next year’s March. This was life-changing.”
The March of the Living was established in 1988 to improve the
way people learn about the Holocaust through an emotional
experience outside of school. The groups are accompanied by
local guides, historians, and survivors. A 2015 study showed
that participants in MOTL-type trips have higher levels of
identification with Israel and are more likely to value marrying
Jews than the general Jewish population.
For more information about donations to and/or participation
in future MOTL teen or adult options, see http://
motlnewengland.org or contact Irv Kempner (IrvKempner@
gmail.com / 617-285-8620).
