“It’s Time for A Gut Check”
It’s time for everyone at Hudson UMC to do a gut check:
“…an assessment of courage, character, or determination.”*
It’s time for everyone to assess if they are offering
themselves in courage, character, and determination to
support the renewal of our ministry in the advancement of
staffing and capital needs. Are you supporting the renewal
of our ministry? If so, how are you doing so?
It’s time for everyone to do a gut check in assessing if
their actions reflect their words and desires for the church to
grow spiritually and numerically. Are your actions a positive
reflection of your words and desires for growth?
Gut check: Are you attending worship, a Sunday school
class, a small group gathering, connecting with others in
fellowship, or participating in mission outreach of the
church? Are you supporting the church with an active
commitment to live your membership discipleship vows of
“prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness?”
The Apostle Paul exhorted the people of Rome and the
surrounding region to “walk their talk” in boldness, courage
and action. The words ring clear for the church family of
Hudson UMC in a call for action! Do a gut check with this
message:

1Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with
God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have
obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in
our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3And not only that, but
we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces
endurance, 4and endurance produces character, and character
produces hope, 5and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s
love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that
has been given to us. (Romans 5:1-5)
Gut check: Are you living faithfully and actively through the peace
and grace of God and Jesus Christ believing that your suffering or any
suffering of the church produces endurance, which produces character,
which produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us? God’s love has
been poured out into your hearts through the Holy Spirit to overcome
obstacles and challenges to GROW IN YOUR FAITH, SHARE YOUR FAITH,
AND GROW THE CHURCH!
It’s time for a gut check. People often observe and talk about what
needs to be changed about the church but are most challenged to be an
active part of the change. Will you be part of the change in a way that is
positive, affirming, and reflects a teaming spirit in the name of God and
Jesus Christ and love for your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ?
It’s time for a gut check. Do you have the courage, character, and
determination to support and grow the church family of Hudson UMC?
Faithfully and Prayerfully in Christ,
Rev. Hoyte Wilhelm, Senior Pastor, Hudson United Methodist Church
*Mirriam-Webster Dictionary’s definition of “gut check”

Love your Neighbor
“Love your neighbor as yourself” is the Second of the Two Great
Commandments of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the occasion when Jesus
shared this teaching with his disciples he followed with telling the
Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10: 25- 37). I have observed that
many people who hear the first part “love your neighbor” do not fully
comprehend “as yourself”. What that means is that each one of us is
important to God who loves us unconditionally and intends for us to
truly love ourselves.
It is not selfish to love ourselves. It is essential for at least two
reasons. First, loving others actually starts with loving ourselves. Not
fully loving ourselves actually inhibits and prevents us from truly loving
others.
Secondly, loving ourselves means taking care of our bodies, minds, and
spirits. It means taking care of our physical bodies with a healthy diet,
exercise, and rest. It means using our minds for creative and
constructive purposes. It means caring for our spirits through prayer,
meditation, meaningful and in- depth conversations with trusted
friends, and solitude.
Many of us, myself included, fall short of making the time and effort to
care for our bodies-minds-spirits. Knowing that we have this need and
doing it are necessary for us to enjoy the abundant life, the fullest life
God intends. If you already have a plan for self-care, good for you. If
not, then hopefully reading this will bring to your attention the
importance of get started in setting time in your busy days caring for
your total being.
REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS: Sheila and Jerry Hammar at the deaths of
her father, Robert Rolph, and
his brother, George Hammar and Pastor Paul at the death of his sister,

Bird. Also remember Ken Kerns, Marjorie Kozar, Jane Moody, Roger
Peters, and Joanne York.

TAILGATE FUN!!!
All in the name of Christian fellowship and community
outreach, two tailgate parties have already taken
place. The purpose of the tailgates is to promote the
visibility of our active church before home football
games and to have intergenerational fun. Church
volunteers pitched in to help with set up, clean up,
games and food. Cookies were handed out to
neighbors walking to the game! Word is that we even
have a church grill now! So be on the lookout for the
next tailgate party via the church bulletin and the
sign up posters in the gathering area, and plan to join
us. We may even try a bonfire after the game
complete with s’mores. Bring your neighbors and
friends. All are welcome!!!

CHANGING THE WORLD – WE NEED YOUR HELP TO
SUSTAIN OUR MISSIONS
Camphor is part of the Liberia Conference of the United
Methodist Church and is a special mission of our East Ohio
Conference. Kathy Dickriedes of the Mentor UMC has
reported to our congregation on the powerful work enabled
by our past Hudson United Methodist Church support. We
have been providing $2000 from our church’s general fund,
in addition to our Apportionment assessment to the East
Ohio Conference. An equal amount has been supporting
the McCurdy Ministries, New Mexico. The Camphor Mission
Station in Africa is building the capacity of Christians to
raise the prosperity, development, faith and hope of the
people of its 42 surrounding villages in Liberia.
Please know that the church general fund can no longer support
these distant ministries. We are unable to finish our giving
to these mission projects this year. By a vote of Church
Council in the 2016-2017 budget most of the general fund
that was allocated for Missions is being re-directed to
maintaining our core ministries supporting our church based
ministry, education, and the care and operation of our
church building. General fund support for the Mission
Committee has been reduced from $6600 to $2000. Our
HUMC support of the East Ohio Conference apportionment
provides $5800 of the World Service and Conference
Benevolence. UMW also generously supports mission
projects.
There are many worthy causes seeking our attention in
society, but why not further align your charitable giving in
faith for those Christian missions overseen by the members
of our Missions Committee? Let’s continue our leadership
support for Camphor and other missions dear to our
congregation. People are torn by poverty at Camphor.
Liberia is recovering from years of recent war and is
threatened by expanding radicalism. The Local missions
which have been supported in the past by the Missions
Committee from the general fund include: Open M; Feed
My Sheep; Heart4theCity; Habitat Hudson Coalition; Akron
Food Bank; the Battered Women’s Shelter; and Hudson
Community Services.
Cont’d …
Page 5
…It is hoped that the congregation will recognize
the need for continuing our missions support with
our notable generosity while maintaining core
pledged and regular tithing and gifts. Please
consider trusting to God your special offering to
continue our mission work to the “Missions
Committee” or specially designated to the mission
of your choice in the collection plate, by
electronic giving, or by mail to the church.
In Christian Outreach, Tom King, Church Council
Chair and Linda Brown, Missions Committee Chair.
YOGA OPPORTUNITIES
Did you know that yoga means to yoke together
your body, mind and spirit? Well that is what we
try to do twice a week here at HUMC.
On Mondays at 4PM, we practice Chair Yoga. Chair
Yoga is appropriate for all ages, fitness levels and
physical conditions. In this safe & supportive class
we use a chair to assist you in gently moving your
body to help improve your flexibility, strength,
balance, muscle tone and breathing habits.
For those that would prefer a more physically
vigorous practice, each Wednesday at 7 PM we
have a traditional mat yoga class (bring your own
mat). Both classes are one hour long and held in
our newly carpeted CAC. A free will offering is
taken at the start of each class.
Whichever class you choose (or do both), it will
help you to stretch out, detox and de-stress while
bringing into balance your whole self. Any
questions, call Cynthia Field (330) 808-1412.

October Family Ministry News
The first month of school is already behind us.
It went so fast. We were meeting new friends
and welcoming back old ones. The four and
five year olds had a busy month. They visited
Beckwith Apple Orchard which is always an
exciting field trip. This year the weather really
cooperated and we enjoyed every minute of it!
They showed us how they make cider and how
they pick the apples
We also started Music, Library, and Lunch
Bunch. It is always exciting to get these
programs underway! October we are looking
forward to “Mr Kevin” from Hudson Fire and
the fours will get to go see him at the fire
station. We will learn about fire safety. We
will also go to Hudson Springs Park for a
walking fall adventure. We will end the month
of course with our Halloween parties. As you
can see we are very busy here at school.
We do have several openings in our 2/1/2
Toddler program, 3 year old, four year old and
5-day pre-k programs. If you know of anyone
looking for preschool please have them call the
office at 330-650-4091.ext. 2
