The Transfiguration of the Lord
9:00 am Classical Worship
Welcome to Worship!
After 6 weekdays out on our own, it is often tempting to imagine that our world is beyond saving.
Disaster persists. Brokenness, sin, and injustice threaten human life. Hope wanes. Which is why
we return to church… to a renewed vision of Christ... to be shocked, awed, and refreshed back
into reality… that God is present, God is good, God’s dream for the earth’s wholeness is still alive,
and God rules. Welcome to our worship of the living God!
The Organ Pre-Service
We welcome you to use this time to prepare for worship and direct yourself towards
the presence of our Creator and Redeemer, Jesus Christ.

Call to Worship
John Worst
*The Call to Worship
The mighty One, God the Creator, speaks,
and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.
Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth.
Our God comes and does not keep silence.
Speak to us, God, for we are listening.

*The Gloria Patri
Hymnal No. 579
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.
The Prayer of Confession
Holy God, we confess that we do not trust You fully. We put our hope
in worldly gain and human promises, and find ourselves defeated
and lost when things fall apart. You have given us a love more fully than
anything we could experience in this world but we do not seek it,
we do not hold on to it, and we look to our own means of assurance
and security. Forgive us. Call us back to You that we may put our trust
in You and not be afraid. May we hear the words so clearly as the
disciples did on the day of the Transfiguration; may we rise up,
and not be afraid. We pray this together in the name of Jesus, Amen.

This is My Beloved Son

He was still speaking when lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them;
And a voice from the cloud said: “This is my beloved Son,
with whom I am well pleased. Hear ye Him!

Living Transfiguration
The Invitation for Giving
“Living high up in
the rarefied air isn’t
the point of
transfiguration. . . .
It was never meant
as a private experience
of spirituality removed
from the public square.
It was a vision
to carry us down,
a glimpse of unimagined possibility
at ground level.”

The Offertory
Canticle of the Turning
arr. John Ferguson
My soul cries out with a joyful shout that the God of my heart is great,
And my spirit sings of the wondrous things that you bring to the ones who wait.
You fixed your sight on your servant's plight, and my weakness you did not spurn,
So from east to west shall my name be blest. Could the world be about to turn?
My heart shall sing of the day you bring. Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near, and the world is about to turn!
Though I am small, my God, my all, you work great things in me,
And your mercy will last from the depths of the past to the end of the age to be.
Your very name puts the proud to shame, and to those who would for you yearn,
You will show your might, put the strong to flight, for the world is about to turn.
From the halls of power to the fortress tower, not a stone will be left on stone.
Let the king beware for your justice tears ev'ry tyrant from his throne.
The hungry poor shall weep no more, for the food they can never earn;
There are tables spread, ev'ry mouth be fed, for the world is about to turn.
Though the nations rage from age to age, we remember who holds us fast:
God's mercy must deliver us from the conqueror's crushing grasp.
This saving word that out forebears heard is the promise which holds us bound,
'Til the spear and rod can be crushed by God, who is turning the world around.

The Prayers of the People
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on
earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive
our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
