FAMILY CORNER Fun in the Sun - Exercise for Kids Matters Children were born to move! Physical activity and movement helps kids develop not only their bodies, but also their brains, their ability to learn, and their social skills. Kids may be born to move, but if they don't see their parents making fitness a priority, they'll turn quickly from jumping beans into couch potatoes. Setting an example as a family to work out helps children enjoy exercise instead of avoid it. Playing with your children gives the kids playmates, demonstrates that you think play is important and offers you the opportunity to get moving too. Get those endorphins going, feel better, and do it together! Exercise ideas to keep your whole family moving: Skipping-rope. Haven't skipped rope or played a little Double Dutch with your friends since you were in grade school? It's fun, trendy and family-friendly. Get the kids involved and get everyone's fitness curve on the upswing. Twenty minutes of jumping is the equivalent of an hour of aerobics. The best part is that skipping-rope is a great lower-body workout. Walk this way. Walking is low-impact beneficial exercise and a great way to spend time with the family talking. Encourage family walks before or after dinner or as the first activity to start your Saturdays and Sundays. Yoga. Yoga has both physical and psychological Take a Bike Ride. Riding a bike is not only a good warm weather pass-time, but is excellent exercise. It is good for the heart and builds leg muscle no matter how intense or leisure the ride. benefits that often seem enhanced when combined with awe-inspiring nature. Alternatives to practicing your asanas (yoga poses) at dawn include yoga in the moonlight and yoga in a quiet glade. Go for a Swim. Swimming is always a summer favorite, especially for children. Drop into your local community pool beaches can be just as fun and maybe more! Fitness trails. Instead of simply biking, jogging or hiking, check out a fitness trail near you. Fitness trails are paths that have a series of stations featuring different exercises. As you jog down the trail, you periodically come upon a chinning bar, parallel bars or, perhaps, a horizontal ladder, all designed to give a different part of your body a workout. Fitness trails are often sponsored by colleges, community groups or your city government, so there's probably one nearby. Designate a Family Fit Night and Family Exercise Instructor. One night of Play together, Play Apart, and Play Safe. Follow these tips to exercise smart on a sunny day: Drink plenty of fluids. A good rule of thumb is to take a few sips of water every 20 minutes or so. Carry your own water bottle and refill it regularly. the week, someone from the family chooses an exercise activity. Make the activity something outdoors and competitive. Cut back on the intensity. Heatstroke can easily sneak up on people who try to push their limits and fail to take the hot sun into consideration. Save your hardest workouts for cooler, overcast days. TIP: Make sure your kids have the time, space and Avoid peak hours. The sun is at its most intense between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. opportunity to move and play. If you're challenged by living in an urban setting or an extreme climate, you might need to be more creative about finding those spaces and opportunities. Wear plenty of sunscreen. Slather on an SPF of 30 or higher at least a half-hour before you head outside.
