Staff News
This is a special tribute to one of our
own Peter Kane, who wedded on
Saturday the 24th of March 2012.
Copy Cat staff had a chance to be
there on his special day as you will
see in the event pictorial section. We
as the Copy Cat family congratulate,
and thank you for letting us celebrate
with you during your special
occasion. ‘‘Here’s to success in your
new titles; groom, husband, and
any more you will pick up over the
years together. May you celebrate
every day together the way you have
celebrated your wedding day.’’
We would like to recognize employees
who had their birthdays in March
though belatedly. The celebrants had
a chance to celebrate their special
day with the Copy Cat family as we
do every month by sharing a piece of
cake as symbol of good health. The
cakes were simultaneously cut at
9.00am on the 30th of March 2012
in all Copy Cat Ltd locations. Once
again we would like to wish the team
a Happy Belated Birthday.

Product Overview: Security
Securing Business Systems
The uptake of ICT by businesses and individuals
has grown exponentially in Kenya as compared
to 10 years ago. Having a computer system of
one form or another (e.g. for email, finance,
helpdesk, web portal, etc.) is now a necessity for companies rather than option to gain
competitive advantage. This is especially so for
small and medium enterprises which need ICT
to survive in the cut-throat business environment. With the arrival of fiber in Kenya, the
possibilities for e-commerce have been expanded tremendously. Businesses are taking advantage by developing systems that enable them
to market better to potential customers while
reducing costs where possible. Customers have
also adopted ICT mainly through mobile phone
technology which is also an encouraging sign
for businesses that are targeting these increasingly technically savvy customers.
With this increased access of systems to the
internet, there also lie risks. The criminals and
hackers are now target systems in Kenya more.
Financial institutions are usually the targets but
other businesses are also being targeting especially those in e-commerce. This is evidenced
by the recent attacks on several banks where
websites were defaced and some confidential
information revealed by a group calling itself
the ‘Rwandan hackers’. The several Government of 103 Kenya websites were also attacked
in a night by an Indonesian. Most big enterprises work hard to secure their systems while
the some SMEs tend to think that they are not
targets for the hackers. However, the opposite
is true since the hackers see the SMEs weak
security as low lying fruits which they can easily
hack into and steal valuable information with
minimum effort. For SMEs the consequences
of this can lead to collapse of the company
and therefore there is a need to for them to be
more vigilant.
There are some simple preventive and avoidance measures that businesses can be put in
place to secure their systems. They include:•
using legal software
•
updating software regularly
•
using latest updates of anti-virus
•
putting basic security on the network
and computer systems
•
changing default passwords
•
checking configuration against known
vulnerabilities
•
performing penetration tests regularly
•
putting tight internal controls
•
separation of duties to avoid fraud, etc.

Are You Willing to take the plunge?
There comes a time in life when you
have to jump in at the deep end
and hope for the best. In fact there
are many times in life when we are
presented with such a choice. As a
toddler you have to learn to overcome anxiety at being separated
from mom, and then that first day
at school can pose some similar
challenges upon an even grander
scale.
Time and again throughout life we
face challenges which we either
learn to overcome or cause us to
feel as if we are sinking. Unless you
want to tread water for the rest of
your life, you do, at some point,
have to overcome your fears and
learn to swim.
One should always be willing to do
things which she was not comfortable with; be willing to push past
internal barriers and dive in at the
deep end.
By taking that enormous plunge,
you bypass much of the decision
making process which other people
would be tied up with; the “Will I?
Won’t I? Should I?” Etc. types of
thoughts which distract your focus,
muddy the waters and dissipate
your energy. There’s no time or
energy wasted on such things when
you just leap in. Once there, your
survival instinct comes to your rescue. It’s sink or swim time. Where
there is a will there is a way, and
your survival instinct is very strong.
The most successful people in
the world share this willingness
to take the plunge and risk the
dangers of encountering waters
which are very much out of their
depth. Their focus upon success is multiplied and therefore
energized because of this. Let's
face it, once you are floundering in the deep end you're not
wasting energy thinking about
whether or not you should be
there; you're just thinking about
how you are going to get out,
aren't you?
You have in fact forced yourself
into a state of tunnel vision. Your
focus is very, very clear and all of
your emotional energy is aligned
with your goals.
These are key components of success. We can all learn from this.
To succeed, you must have a clear
goal and fix your undivided attention and energies upon it. The
greater your mental focus and
more intense the energy which you
apply will directly relate to how
quickly you will attain your goals.
This is the true secret of success.
At the heart of extraordinary success lies a willingness to jump in at
the deep end. How willing are you
to take that plunge? Is it possible
to learn how to do so?
