Anything that does not find a new home must be taken back in by 9:00pm as there will be no municipal collection. Finally, enjoy the treasures that you have found! owntown Barrie (BIA) and the City of Barrie have been working hard to create new curb appeal in the downtown core by encouraging modern cafés, restaurant patios with live music and boutiques, but still they found that something was missing. New business was not enough, something more was needed to draw residents and keep them there, enjoying our downtown core fully. We needed liveliness to return to our sidewalks like the soft dreamy sounds of a sax, the funny antics of a comedian, or the mind-boggling tricks of a magician. It was clear to the City that despite improvements, the downtown core needed further enhancements, so the BIA joined forces with the Department of Culture and launched the Street Performer Program in 2009. With a few improvements, the program evolved into audition-based paid street performer positions, with various style of entertainers gracing the Downtown Core throughout the summer. Over 30 Street Performer auditions were held on March 26th 2015 in the City Hall Rotunda. This selection of the successful candidates was really difficult, as there were so many talented people, says Department Onalee Groves. of Culture Officer The selected performers were chosen by three judges with acquired talents and years of experience in the music industry. Judges include Joey Cee of the Toronto Blues and Jazz festival, Krista Storey, previous manager of the Orillia Opera House, now the Cultural Manager for the Town of Gravenhurst, and Chas Hay of Inside the Music. For more information on Free Goods Exchange Day and to download the poster, check out the Events Calendar on Barrie.ca. Other regular performances will also be running. So check out the schedule and plan your next trip downtown during performance hours: LUNCHTIME LIVE Fridays & Saturdays 12:00 noon – 2:00pm OTHER SUMMER BUSKING HOURS Wednesdays 5:00 – 8:00pm Thursdays 5:00 – 8:00pm Fridays 5:00 – 8:00pm Saturdays 5:00 – 8:00pm Sundays 3:00 – 6:00pm Street performing, often referred to as busking, dates back to the antiquities. Many believe the term busker derives from the root word “busk,” which means seeking to entertain with song and dance, and from the Spanish word “buscar,” which means to seek. As such, busker refers to seeking appreciation for an art form. Prior to the introduction of recording and personal electronics, artists often performed on the streets and public venues as a means of employment. Blues icon B. B. King started by performing on street corners in his youth, playing up to four towns per night. Rod Stewart also busked early on in his career in various spots throughout London. But street performing encompasses various disciplines including magical acts, comedy acts, dances, painting, and more. Many are intriguing and dangerous to say the least, including fire-eaters, highwire walkers, stilt troupes, trapeze aerialists and more. Street performing is considered a unique and legitimate art form, and the only one that interacts directly with its audience. Its performance style is heavily based on in-the-moment spontaneity and improvisation and requires an enormous amount of talent. No other art form is as diverse, as spontaneous or as accessible to everyone. Robin Williams, while attending Juilliard School in New York, earned extra income as a mime. Google his name with the term "mime" and click on images to see many photos of very young Robin Williams entertaining crowds. Other artists who performed to street audiences early on in their careers include Penn & Teller, The Flying Karamotsov's, Patch Adams, Philip Petite, W. C. Fields, Marcel Marceau, Sinbad, and Jimmy Buffet. So, note our street performing hours and let our talented artists liven-up your next trip downtown. Like a performance? Don’t forget to tip as Barrie’s street performers only garner a small wage. DO YOU KNOW THESE CELEBRITY BUSKERS? Bon Jovi busked in various venues including London’s Covent Gardens & Moscow’s Red Square. Benjamin Franklin composed songs, poetry and stories based on current events and performed them on the streets. Bruce Springsteen played a variety of songs with a street busker in Copenhagen. Paul McCartney wearing a disguise of a busker for a video, was unrecognized by the public who would toss him coins as he plucked his guitar. He donated the money to a charity. Sting has donned a disguise and busked, after reaching fame, once making a total of £40 (approx. $75). Pierce Brosnan began as a fire-eater on the streets of London, attracting the attention of a circus agent, the first step to his acting career.
