MR MCGEE
by Pamela Allen
This popular children’s book is a great one to add to your
home library. Mr McGee and his life under the apple tree is
a great rhyming book to share with your little one.
DID YOU K NOW?
Simple rhyming texts are a great way to start your child listening for similar words and
sounds. By reading these stories regularly, with emphasis on the rhyming text, you are
assisting your child to notice the same sound and identify it as they hear it in future.

Look at the front cover with your child and talk about what they can see. A tree, a
bed, a cat, a man and an apple.
Read the title and talk about the man on the front cover. Could he be Mr McGee?
What is different about him? His hat, moustache, blue socks?

The pictures in this story are so expressive and full of discussion points. Take the
time to look and see what each picture holds, point out things that might not be
mentioned in the text and the expressions on his face. Ask ‘is he happy or sad?’
Each page includes a new phrase of rhyming text. Make sure you take the time to
emphasise the rhyming words so you develop a rhythm as you read.

Mr McGee is a great book to re-read as the rhyming text becomes more familiar and
predictable for your child the more you read. You might like to look at your library
for other Mr McGee titles too as there are many in this series.
A lot of stories for children of this age encourage rhyming. You might like to collate a
few of your rhyming books at home into a box to keep in your child’s play area.
