1. Wilmot Proviso- Introduced a proposal to keep slavery out of Mexican Cession
2. Sectionalism- Devotion to one region of the country instead of the whole country
3. Lewis Cass- Michigan Senator who favored popular sovereignty/ Democratic candidate
in 1848 election who LOST
4. Popular Sovereignty- Voted whether to have slavery or not
5. California and slavery issue- Wanted to be a FREE state
6. Free Soil Party and Martin VanBuren- Formed by antislavery northerners before. He
was F.S.P. candidate and LOST- Support Wilmot Proviso elected in 1848.
7. Henry Clay- Author of Compromise of 1850 “Great Compromise”
8. Compromise of 1850- (5 Key Items) 1. Brought Californis in as a FREE state, 2. NEW
fugitive slave Act, 3. Texas governed land up to New Mexico and paid debts, 4. divided
Mexican Cession and used popular sovereignty, 5. END slave trade
9. Fugitive Slave Act- Made it a federal crime to help runaway slaves and fugitive slaves to
be arrested even where slavery was illegal.
10. Fredrick Douglas- Former SLAVE, wrote famous slave narrative.
11. Harriet Beecher Stowe and Uncle Tom’s Cabin- She wrote the antislavery novel.
12. Election of 1852- Franklin Pierce- He favored Compromise of 1850. WON election in
1852.
13. Kansas-Nebraska Act and Stephen Douglas- He introduced it in order to create
opportunities for a Transcontinental Railroad.
14. “Bleeding Kansas”- Nickname for Kansas , Violence over slavery.
15. John Brown- Led raid at Harpers Ferry. Led Pottawatomie Massacre
16. Sacking of Lawrence, Kansas- Town burned and attacked by proslavery men.
17. Pottawatomie Massacre- Killing of 5 proslavery men
18. Republican Party- Formed in 1854-1850s, against slavery. Abe Lincoln Party WON 1860.
19. Election of 1856- James Buchanen- Nominated by Democrats and WON. Not associated
with Kansas-Nebraska Act.
20. Dred Scott Decision- Sued for freedom but LOST, case Dred Scott was not free, living in
Freeland did not make you free and Missouri compromise unconstitutional
21. Roger B. Taney- Chief Justice who wrote major opener of Dred Scott case- Southerner
22. Lincoln Douglas Debates- Series of debates for Senate seat in I ll
23. Freeport Doctrine- Proclamation by S. Douglas that people (not the Supreme Court)
could decide slavery issue
24. John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry- Unsuccessful because slaves did not join him
caught convicted and executed
25. Constitutional Union Party- John Bell- Party finding 1860 that supported the
Constitution Union-- John Bell was candidate
26. Election of 1860- Abe Lincoln was elected
27. Secession -Act of formally withdrawing from the union
28. South Carolina -First State to succeed after Lincoln was elected in 1860
29. Crittenden Compromise- Plan proposed by Crittenden to avoid secession. Series of
constitutional amendments to satisfactory south.
30. Confederate states of America-Formed by South state - seceded on February 4, 1861
31. Jefferson Davis -President of Confederacy
