The Hunger Games: Level 3
by Suzanne Collins
~adapted by E. Morlandt
This country is Panem. It is a fictional story that takes
place in what we know as the United States.
In the Capitol of Panem, people are rich. The other
districts provide everything that they need so they don’t
have to work.
In District 12, people are poor. They provide coal for the
Capitol. Coal is a source for energy to heat homes and
make electronics work.
Katniss lives in District 12. She lives with her mom and
her sister, Prim.
She has a friend named Gale. Gale and Katniss hunt for
food to feed their families because they have to support
their families.
Gale is in love with Katniss.
The Capitol says it is time for the Hunger Games.
In the Hunger Games, a boy and girl from each district
fight. They are called Tributes.
They fight until all of them die except for one. Only one
tribute can be the Victor, or winner.
Prim is picked to be the girl tribute for the Hunger Games.
Katniss volunteers to take Prim's place as the female
tribute for District 12.
The boy from District 12 is Peeta. Peeta is a baker, or
someone who makes bread and pastries.
Peeta and Katniss go to the Capitol to prepare for the
games. The Capitol is very far from District 12, and they
are very nervous and anxious.
People watch the Hunger Games on TV and meet Katniss
and Peeta with the other district tributes.
During his interview, Peeta tells everyone on TV that he
loves Katniss. The audience, or people watching the TV
show, are sad because one of them must die in the
Hunger Games.
The games start and Peeta and Katniss need to stay
alive. They survive for many days, but they are not
helping each other because they think they have to kill
each other.
The Capitol says that two people can win as long as they
are from the same district. Katniss finds Peeta and he is
hurt. She helps him find shelter and to get well again.
Katniss and Peeta are the only two tributes left! They
think they have won and can go home!
Oh, no! The Capitol says that only one person can win
now.
Katniss and Peeta do not want to kill each other, so they
decide to eat poisonous berries. That way no one is the
winner.
The Capitol says that Peeta and Katniss both win the
Hunger Games. They tell everyone they are in love and
that is why they broke the Capitol’s rules by trying to eat
the berries.
The game-master and President Snow are very angry
that they broke the rules. President Snow feels like
Katniss and Peeta made the Capitol look like fools.
Katniss and Peeta go home to District 12. Gale has been
taking care of Katniss’s family while she has been gone.
He is sad that she said she loves Peeta.
Who will Katniss love? Peeta or Gale?
Will President Snow get his revenge?
