Nelson Mandela Hall on the Qwaqwa Campus and in the Arena on the South Campus. Staff is ready to help you at each of
the service stations.
Station 1: Registration information and printing
of verified enrolment documents – kick-off the
registration process by verifying and printing your
personal detail. Also, check your academic status
here. We will refer you to the next station per the
service indicators, blocks, and academic advice.
Station 2: Applications – Haven’t applied yet? Please
do so online. Expect feedback within 24 hours. If
your application is successful, you will get a SMS
with your username and admission details.
Station 3: Submission of application or admission
documentation – Submit your ID, parent’s ID (if you
are younger than 18), and Grade 12 results or other
qualifications results.
Station 4: Qualification changes – want to change
your qualification? You must complete the required
form. If you are a registered student and want to
change to a selection course, you must get a signature from the relevant faculty.
6
Station 5: Admissions – have your verified enrolment
documents and student number that were printed
at station 1, ready. Get your admission status.
Station 6: National Benchmark Tests – great!
You’re almost halfway. NBT staff will help you to
verify your NBT results. Your results will determine
whether you must take an Academic Literacy
Development module. If your results are higher than
the minimum requirements, you don’t need to take
the development module. Remember to sign for
receipt of the letter.
Station 7:
Financial Aid – ask any questions about,
or get guidance on financial aid.
Station 8: Tuition fees – this is the one-stop
service for all financial matters. Keep your verified
enrolment documents, proof of payment of the
pre-registration deposit, and the proof of sponsors
if you have a bursary, at hand. Any financial holds
will be resolved here. You can also make payment
arrangements at this station.
Station 9: Housing and Residence Affairs – your
home away from home. Check the availability of
residence accommodation and your application
status. You will be directed to the waiting area in
the foyer of the Equitas Building.
Station 10: International Affairs – at this station, we
will help you with the removal of service indicators,
verification of personal information, visa, passport,
and medical aid.
Station 11: Tuition fees for master’s and doctoral
students – postgraduate students must stop at
station 11 to resolve financial holds, and make
payment arrangements. Keep your verification
documents, proof of payment of your preregistration deposit, and the proof of sponsors if
you have a bursary, at hand.
Station 12: Registration of master’s and doctoral
students – after you have settled the financials,
you can proceed to finalise your postgraduate
registration.
Station 13: UFS passwords – hang in there, you’re
almost done. You need a unique password to access
UFS systems such as email, Blackboard, and library
services. Have your ID, passport, or driver’s licence
at hand for verification.
Station 14: Self-service and manual registration –
the modules provided by the academic advisors are

study and modules that are not part of the
curriculum are captured now. Your goal is to leave
with a printout of the proof of your registration.
Station 15: UFS 101 and Blackboard assistance –
Blackboard is an essential part of your academic life
at Kovsies. The IT staff will assist you to schedule
Blackboard training. You will also register for the
compulsory UFS 101 module. Keep your proof of
registration, UFS Campus password, and class
timetable ready.
Station 16: Issuing of student cards – your registration as a Kovsie student is almost complete. It
is time to take your picture, and issue you with a
student card. Remember to smile!

WHAT IS UFS 101?
Since 2012, the University of the Free State offers a
specifically designed core curriculum module, UFS101, as
an exciting learning experience for mainstream first-year
students.
UFS101 is presented during the first and second semester.
According to the rules of the university, UFS101 is a
compulsory 16-credit module for all mainstream students
registering for a first degree or diploma qualification.
The aim of UFS101 is to create a new kind of Kovsie graduate
who will stand out among South African graduates. In
this module you will learn how to look at local and global
challenges from different perspectives and engage critically
with the newest thinking nationally and internationally in
fields such as nanotechnology, law and history, to name
only a few. You will also learn more about yourself and
confront the boundaries in your thinking. The module
will be presented by leading experts and lecturers in each
respective field.
In addition to the above-mentioned skills, UFS101 prepares
students who wish to apply to participate in initiatives such
as the Leadership for Change Programme and the Stanford
University Sophomore College Programme.

GLOSSARY
University:
An institution of advanced study and research where the highest possible academic qualification can be obtained.
Chancellor:
The Chancellor is the ceremonial head of the university and is generally a prominent figure in society. Our Chancellor is Dr
Khotso Mokhele.
Rector:
The Rector is the Chief Executive Officer of the university, with Vice-Rectors supporting him. Our Vice-Chancellor and
Rector is Prof Francis Petersen.
University Council:
The University Council is the highest decision-making body of the university. The Council consists of representatives of
the university, the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), church and community representatives, prominent business
people, and individuals appointed by the government.
Faculty:
The students, lecturers, research and management of a group of departments who (in a broad sense) work in the same
field of study, form a faculty.
The Bloemfontein Campus has seven faculties of excellence:
• Economic and Management Sciences
• Education
• Health Sciences
• Law
• Natural and Agricultural Sciences
• The Humanities
• Theology
The Qwaqwa Campus has four faculties of academic excellence:
19
• Economic and Management Sciences
• Education
• Humanities
• Natural and Agricultural Sciences
The head of a faculty is called a dean and resides at the
Bloemfontein Campus. At the Qwaqwa Campus, faculty
heads are called programme heads and the subject head is
responsible for the management of departments.
Department:
The students, lecturers, research and management activities in a specific field of study form a department. At the
head of a department, we find the departmental head or
departmental chairperson. For undergraduate courses, you
will be required to attend classes in various departments,
while postgraduate studies are generally undertaken in a
single department.
Professor:
A person who has distinguished himself/herself as an
expert in a specific field of study.
Lecturer:
The name assigned to a person who presents classes to
students. Each department has a number of lecturers who
are experts in specific fields of study and who are attached
full-time to the university. Lecturing staff are addressed in
terms of their titles.
20
Kovsie:
The historical word ‘Kovsie’ is the nickname given to
students at the UFS. This is also the general name used for
referring to the UFS.
Degree:
An academic achievement that provides evidence that you
are academically competent in a specific field of study so
that you may embark upon a career or careers related to
this field.
Undergraduate refers to students who are studying for the
first degree, while the term postgraduate refers to students
engaged in a study field where they have already obtained
a degree.
For example, the term degree could denote a BA degree
(Baccalaureus Artium), a BCom degree (Baccalaureus
Commercii), or a BSc degree (Baccalaureus Scientiae
Bachelor of Science). The minimum period of study for an
undergraduate bachelor’s degree is generally three or four
years.
This is followed by an honours degree (generally one or two
years) or a master’s degree (one or more years) and finally
a doctorate (generally two years or longer).
Some degrees lead directly into certain professions, while
other degrees provide general preparation for a variety of
careers. A general BCom degree will equip you with the
necessary economic and management knowledge so that,
for example, you may apply for a position as a manager in
a company.
Module:
A module refers to specific fields of study within a
discipline. For example, Financial Management is one of
several modules in the field of study known as Business
Management.
The Academic Calendar:
An academic year consists of two semesters. The first
semester usually commences early in February, and the
second semester by the end of July. In between, there is
generally a holiday of approximately three weeks. The
second semester is concluded at the end of November.
Undergraduate students write an examination at the end of
each semester. For postgraduate studies, much more selfstudy and research is expected from students.
