Lodge Lane’s Art Exhibit
“For all they have achieved throughout life
and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe
older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute.”
With those words, President Ronald Reagan
proclaimed Aug. 21, 1988 the first National
Senior Citizens Day, now an annual celebration.
In observance of Senior Citizens Day, LODGE
LANE will host our first Resident Art Show on
August 21st at 2pm. Mark your calendars and
come out to show your support.

NATIONAL ASSISTED LIVING WEEK “KEEP CONNECTED”
LODGE LANE is gearing up for 2016 National
Assisted Living Week. This week-long celebration was
established by the National Center for Assisted Living
in 1995. This dedicated week provides opportunities
for residents, their loved ones, staff, volunteers, and the
surrounding communities to recognize the role of
assisted living in caring for America’s seniors. Each year,
the National Organization provides a theme to follow.
Communities around the country offer a variety of
events and activities to celebrate. The theme for 2016 is
“Keep Connected.” Although technological innovations
have paved the way for improvements in healthcare
and played an integral part in our everyday lives, the
theme “Keep Connected” begs us to recall a simpler
time when relationships were established face-to-face
and we awaited the arrival of the postman to send or
receive communication from our distanced loved ones.
National Assisted Living Week takes place Sunday,
September 11th – Saturday, September 17th. Mark your
calendars and look for the announcement of festivities
coming soon.
AUGUST SUPER FOOD:
SPECTACULAR
STONE FRUITS
Nothing says summer quite
like the sweet, juicy flavors that
stone fruits offer. What exactly is
a stone fruit, you ask? The term
“stone fruit” is more of a
culinary term. It comes from the
stone-hard covering found
around the single large seed at
the fruit’s core.
Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy,
Oh Boy! LODGE LANE Is

AUGUST BIRTHDAYS
Common stone fruits are
peaches, nectarines, apricots,
plums, and cherries.
Surprisingly, almonds and
avocados are also included in
the stone fruit family. Stone
fruits offer nutritional benefits
such as fiber, potassium, and
vitamins A and C. Almonds and
avocados are great sources of
protein and healthy fat. Stone
fruits are delicious simply eaten
“off the vine” at the peak of
ripeness. But have you tried
them roasted, poached, or
sautéed? This month, LODGE
LANE dining services will be
honoring this super food by
offering several varieties of
preparation. Look for the stone
fruit of your fancy on this
month’s menu and at your Café
hydration stations.

LODGE LANE Partners
With Paws for People
LODGE LANE is happy to
announce that we have
partnered with Paws for People
to provide therapeutic pet visits.
Studies suggest that animal
assisted therapy helps reduce
anxiety and boredom. Pet visits
benefit residents who have
apprehensions about
participating in programs, as
visits often increase socialization
among peers.

REMEMBER WHEN:
PENNY CANDY
“A penny saved is a penny
earned,” said Ben Franklin.
Although they may not get you
far today, pennies were at one
time precious to children. What
could you buy for a penny? One
penny could buy you two pieces
of candy! Sarah B. recalls her
childhood experience with
penny candy. “My Daddy would
give me a nickel a day. I’d run to
my uncle’s drug store and get a
small sack of candy. Of course, I
had to hide it from my mother.
One day, I forgot I had hid the
candy in my bloomers and at
bedtime, it fell out and mother
found it! Well Daddy and I were
both in trouble then!” Most
Your Body and Water
Everybody knows the human
body needs water to survive.
But what does water do for
you, exactly?
The average adult’s body is
about 60 percent water, twothirds of it contained in cells.
Water plays a crucial role in the
formation of cells, which are
often called the building blocks
of life.
Most of the human body’s
major systems depend on water
to function. Water delivers
oxygen and nutrients
throughout the body, lubricates
joints, flushes out waste and
toxins, and regulates the body’s
internal temperature.
Water makes swallowing and
grocery stores held dozens of
varieties of penny candy. From
fruity All Day Suckers to Double
Bubble, penny candy and penny
candy stores bring back
wonderful childhood memories.

In fact, just a 5 percent decrease

Adults need between 2 and
3 liters of water every day,
but some of this water can
come from food. Fresh
fruits and vegetables are
especially hydrating.

—Euripides
