What are your top five favorite picture books that are not your own? Snow by Uri Shulevitz, Lyle Lyle Crocodile by Bernard Waber, The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss, Nana in the City by Lauren Castillo, ABC by Bruno Munari What is your favorite John Hughes movie? As a child of the 80s, I must choose the classic Sixteen Candles! If you could play any part in Hamilton the musical, which character would you pick? I’m obsessed with Hamilton and have seen the show twice on Broadway. While I would LOVE to wear one of those Schuyler sister gowns, I’m going to go with King George. So little time on stage, but he makes such a huge comedic impact when he is! And I think Lin-Manuel would dig a female King George. (And if you become my mentee, I will tell you all about the time I went to the Miranda family garage sale in Washington Heights and bought Lin’s copy of THE LITTLE PRINCE.) What are your three favorite current TV shows? I don’t watch much TV, but when I do, it is The Walking Dead, Shark Tank, or Netflix documentaries. If you had to get a tattoo today, what would it be? My sons’ initials in the typefaces that each of them is named after. My mentee will benefit most in the areas of: Art and design. I have a long career background as a designer, and I find it very helpful when writing and illustrating picture books. I am not the best mentor for: Authors only The most important thing I am looking for in a mentee: Someone who is willing to put in the work and is a good communicator. And someone who is fun! Any other items you want your potential mentees to know? Having just gone through my first book release, I’ve learned a lot, and I am very excited to help a future book creator.
