Blending space science, planet-poking and bluegrass-playing spacecraft operators, the
world’s first orchestra composed of space scientists – the International Space Orchestra
(ISO) - is coming together to perform as the supporting act to Sigur Rós at the Hollywood
Bowlon24thSeptember2016,LosAngeles,CA,USA.
TheInternationalSpaceOrchestra(ISO)isanassemblyofstar-spangledspacescientistsfrom
NASA Ames Research Center, Singularity University, International Space University and the
SETI Institute. ISO is a production by ‘manufacturers of the impossible’ Nelly Ben Hayoun
(NBH)Studiosand,forthisoccasion,ISOwillbeperformingcoversofSigurRós’songs.Ofthe
performance,BenHayounsays:“Itisinspiredbyourdesiretounderstandtheuniverse,and
torocket-propeloursoulstofurthergalaxies,rockinguptheuniverseaboveandbeyond.”
The ISO will perform with animated visuals inspired by the latest NBH studios and
DartmouthFilmson-goingproduction“TheLife,theSeaandtheSpaceViking”.Beginningin
the deepest depths of a prehistoric sea, and ending in the outermost reaches of a distant
solarsystem,thisprojectaimstounravelour"biologicalarcheology”,mergingthefieldsof
astrobiology, terraforming and the research of extremophiles. This bold journey, spanning
time and space, is exploring our ever-evolving world and the cosmic wonders of what lie
beyond.

Currentlyfinishingitsdevelopmentphase,“TheLife,theSeaandtheSpaceViking”isNelly
Ben Hayoun Studios and Dartmouth Films latest production. A Space Odyssey and Viking
Saga11kmunderthesea,documentingasubmersibleexpeditionandanencounterwithour
biological archeology. Merging the fields of astrobiology, terraforming and the research of
extremophiles,theprojectissetforreleasein2017.Anexpeditionofunchartedterritories,
encompassing all scales of science, but also inspiring questions of humanity’s place in the
universe,theprojectexploresthescienceofspacecolonisation.Theprojectfeaturesleading
scientists at NASA and the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute and
documentsasubmersibleexpedition-aswelearnfromlifeonEarth,howtocreatelifeon
anotherplanet.
“The Life, the Sea and the Space Viking” follows NBH Studios latest feature film Disaster
Playground.DisasterPlaygroundpremieredatSXSW2015andwasselectedasoneofthesix
highlights of SXSW. Prior to Disaster Playground, NBH Studios assembled the International
SpaceOrchestra.TheISOisstillupandrunningatNASAAmesResearchCenterinCalifornia.
The feature film about the project was recognized by international critique as a
“masterpiece” (ICO), a ‘real achievement’ (DOMUS), “as thrilling as watching a rocket
launch”and“SpineTingling”(Guardian).

BenHayounassembledanddirectstheInternationalSpaceOrchestra(ISO)–theworld’sfirst
orchestra of space scientists and astronauts from NASA. The ISO recordings and CD were
blastedfromaJapaneselaunchpadinAugust2013andhavesincebeenorbitingaroundthe
Earth in the International Space Station. Her multilayered, experiential design practice has
previouslyresultedincollaborationswithcomposersBeck,DamonAlbarn,BobbyWomack,
the Prodigy, Penguin Café and Ed Bangers records. Her work has been exhibited at the
National Museum of China, MOMA, V&A and other leading design institutions. Her latest
