Activity sheet A Water fact cards – Answers True We get 1 litre of water from the food that we eat every day Chemical reactions that happen in our bodies need water to take place We should drink about 1.2 litres of water every day to keep us hydrated Our bodies lose water through sweating, breathing and going to the toilet When the weather is warm, or we are being active, we need to drink more water Tap water is a great drink to choose when you are thirsty, it contains no sugar which can damage teeth We should drink about 6 - 8 glasses of water every day If a person becomes dehydrated they may feel dizzy, tired and have a headache Water is needed to help the blood in our body carry nutrients around and get rid of waste In some places in the world people do not have access to clean drinking water Drinking water can help someone concentrate Milk and squash count towards your daily fluid intake Water makes up about 2/3rds of the weight of a healthy body Being dehydrated means the body does not have enough water False You should only drink water at mealtimes – water should be sipped throughout the day to make sure that a person stays hydrated Fizzy and sugary drinks are just as good for our bodies as water – they contain sugar which can be damaging to our teeth People can survive without water for weeks but can only survive a few days without food – people can survive longer without food than water, water is vital for our survival If the body gets dehydrated a person’s urine (wee) will turn green – a person’s urine will become dark yellow if they are dehydrated but would not turn green! Water that comes out of our taps comes straight from rivers and lakes – water has to be treated at a water treatment works before it is Fit to drink! Boys need to drink more water than girls – people of different sizes, weights and activity levels may need to drink different amounts of water but there is no difference because of being male or female It is best to drink all the water your body needs in one go, first thing in the morning – it is advised that water is sipped throughout the day to make sure that a person stays hydrated
