Shelby’s Farewell There are many forms of love but you will never have it or see it if you can’t accept it. I thought love was conditional because most people have a rebuttal after they said something that was supposed to be meaningful. I used to think I was too damaged and broken to ever see unconditional love. Life is a beautiful gift and should be cherished, but if you see no value in it, then it has lost its meaning. Dear Friends, I grew up in a physically abusive home with no hope. My parents were surrounded by drug abuse and I was severely uneducated. I lived in 34 different homes before I was 9. My father went to prison for abusing me when I was eight years old. When I was 15 and living in Florida, I met my best friend who would later become my life partner. He would stand by me no matter what. Getting approval for our relationship hit a harsh reality and caused me to be homeless while I was still in High School. Patrick, who was a senior when we met, graduated and was living on his own. He had me move in with him. He helped me graduate High School, taught me how to drive, helped me get a part-time job and get into college classes. He won the heart of my grandfather, the only person close to me. Everything seemed to be going perfect until my grandfather’s life was taken. I blamed God. I blamed everything on God. I Ethan, Patrick, & Shelby Patrick and I moved to Ft. Myers thinking that running was the best choice and hoping for a fresh start. With my past haunting me and my grandpa’s death, I began to change in the worst ways. I began to lie and cheat on Patrick and got involved in drinking and drugs. In 2012 I even became pregnant. When Patrick heard of my pregnancy, he came to me and we decided that we would work on our relationship and take responsibility for the baby. We married on April 10, 2013. Though we loved each other our past issues and mistakes began to haunt us. Not being able to trust each other led to another separation and domestic violence on both our parts. By then I was pregnant with a second child and it made things more confusing. Our separation caused me to spiral downward and get involved in a life I didn’t want…a life that would later take me to my knees. I was homeless again, sleeping in my car with my son. My mind was set upon divorce and I wanted to abort my unborn child. Things became even worse when my car broke down and I had to find places for my son and me to sleep day by day. I called a pregnancy clinic and they referred me to Lifeline. I came into Lifeline thinking I was going to get an abortion, until I walked through the front doors and seen what they really do. With great love and understanding, as well as patience and counseling for me and my husband, they helped us rebuild our marriage. Instilling God back into my life, they helped me see that anything is possible. I recommend this program to anyone who was like me. The rebirth of my life happened here at Lifeline. My husband Patrick will be graduating with his RN in June 2015. I’m working on my Veterinary Assistant certification, and our second child is due April 10, 2015, which just so happens to be our anniversary of 8 years together and 2 years married. I thank God every day for the changes in my life. Always keep in mind, what doesn’t kill you can only make your faith stronger. From our hearts to yours, Shelby, Patrick, Ethan and Baby Brother A Few Words From Our President When Shelby and Patrick reunited their little family just before Christmas, I asked her if she would consider writing the “Heart of the Matter” article for this issue of Life Lines. I never expected her to be so totally transparent in sharing her story. As you read Shelby’s story, I hope you will have an even better understanding of the broad scope that the heart and mission of Lifeline Family Center encompasses. Just before Christmas we also had the joy of reconciling one of our moms with her Dad. Samantha and baby Michael were able to spend Michael’s first Christmas with his grandpa. When reconciliation is possible, and it is a healthy life affirming choice, that is our first desire. When that is not possible we are more than ready and eager to step up to the plate and be that family for our moms and babies. February is a special landmark month for Lifeline Family Center. Nineteen years ago on February 15 we invited our first young mom into our little converted duplex on Orchid Boulevard, Cape Coral. Nineteen years later we are in our beautiful, built to need, complex on southeast Fifth Avenue. Since February 15, 1996 young women and their babies have called Lifeline Family Center “home”…147 of them. As we celebrate 19 years of ministry right here in southwest Florida, we invite you to join us in praising our God and Father for the mercy and grace of Lifeline Family Center that He has made possible through your support. You are a part of each victory. Thank you. For life and Truth, Kathy Miller President/ Founder P.s.-Make sure to stay up to date with our blog and our website LifelineFamilyCenter.org ! Uzziah & Kathy Volunteer Angel News I’m Kim Heller and I volunteer in the nursery at Lifeline Family Center. I’m a grandma but my grandson lives in Minneapolis, so I get to be a grandma to the babies at Lifeline. It is a joy to be there with these precious children that are gifts from God. I also help out with getting the newsletter and Christmas cards out to all of our donors. It is a feeling of camaraderie with the other volunteers when working on these mailing projects. Lifeline is a great place to help out at. You receive many blessings in return for your time helping out. LifeWalk 2014 Recap By Karen Quintero There is no way to downplay God’s hand over LifeWalk 2014. From the beginning, it was a new adventure for some of us here at Lifeline. We knew little about the logistics and details, but we prayed God would enlighten us along the way. And goodness did He go above and beyond! From our wonderful Church Captains who worked with their churches motivating not only the pastor but their whole congregation, to the unbelievable group of students at Florida School of Discipleship who took care of the menial tasks of the day, to YOU, the walkers and supporters, who exceeded our goal for 2014. You raised over $28,000! THANK YOU! I don’t know any other way to put it but you are real-life heroes. You didn’t just help us have a successful walk, you helped us save lives! A big shout-out to the top fundraising church: Sanibel Community Church, to the top fundraising youth group: Friends Club from First Assembly and top fundraising individual: Pastor Daryl Donovan from Sanibel Community Church. Blessings of joy, peace, and opportunities this New Year, is our prayer for all our readers and all who support the many ministries here at Lifeline. As I write this, I am reminded of the many calls we had during the holiday season. Many people searching for housing, food and almost anything you could think of that is a basic necessity for survival. Although we are a crisis pregnancy ministry, and our hotline is for that purpose, we get all kinds of crisis calls, which give us the opportunity to assist with referrals and share the good news of God’s love. We speak to women who are hurting through a crisis pregnancy Ms. Sara or who have lost a child through abortion or miscarriage. We get to minister to the mom who has three other children, who is now pregnant and chooses life through an adoption plan. We are blessed to have the ultrasound machine to help an abortion vulnerable client see and hear her baby’s heartbeat. Through our Bible study ministry, we see God forgive and set free women who have had an abortion. Congratulations! The following Angels earned Wings or Halos this quarter of 2014-2015: White Wings Silver Wings Gold Wings White Halo All great tools for what the Lord has anointed us to do, but, what about the calls we didn’t expect? The mom on the street with her kids who needs a shelter. The family man who just lost his job and needs food. The new mom who needs parenting classes or the elderly who need financial help with utilities. We give these people hope for assistance through referrals to the United Way 211 helpline. But, these calls are also an opportunity to share the good news that God will provide a way even when there seems to be no way. At times, all they need to hear or feel is that someone cares enough to listen to them and offer hope.” That is the good news and referral they need the most. We know this by the way they let us pray with them. Please continue to pray and support this ministry as we focus on being “about our Father’s business”. (after 60 hrs.) (after 120 hrs.)
