The project site is located in Maracaibo, Venezuela. The link crosses the
Maracaibo Lake at Santa Cruz de
Mara on the west shore and at Punta
de Palmas on the east shore.
The combined road and railway
crossing comprises a 5.6 kilometres
long low-level bridge and a 4.4 kilometres long tunnel connected by a
1.5 kilometres long artificial island.
The bridge will have 75 metres long
spans constructed with pre-stressed
concrete on pile group foundations.
The tunnel comprises an immersed
tunnel with a length of 3.7 kilometres
and cut and cover tunnels at each
end with a total length of 0.7 kilometres.
The typical tunnel cross-section is
a six-bore structure with four traffic
tubes, two of which contain two road
lanes each while the other two contain the railway. The remaining two
bores contain a service gallery and a
gallery for a high-voltage cable, respectively.
The island has an elliptical shape to
minimise the blockage of water flow,
thereby securing that the link will be
neutral to the marine environment.
