Letter From the President
As a former recipient of a Women’s Bar Foundation Scholarship,
I could not be prouder to be leading the Board of the Women’s Bar
Foundation. I spent the last several years serving as the Foundation’s
Scholarship Director, and each year I was humbled by the
accomplishments, service, energy and optimism of the women we
interviewed. Each year I was also touched by the impact that our scholarships have on the women who receive them. I am privileged
to serve this Foundation, and in doing so to honor the successes,
and invest in the future of, such amazing women law students.
As a member of the Board of Directors of the Women’s Bar Foundation for nearly
a decade, and as a former recipient myself, I want to offer two observations about the
Foundation which highlight the importance of the Foundation’s mission.
First, in selecting scholarship recipients, the Women’s Bar Foundation looks for more
than academic excellence—we look for future leaders. The recipients of our scholarships are
diverse, dedicated to community service and social justice, and driven to succeed. Many of
them have worked their way through college and law school, and some support families
as they attend law school. We view the scholarships as an investment in the next generation
of the legal profession.
Second, we are dedicated to increasing the financial impact of the Foundation’s
scholarships. When I received my own Women’s Bar Foundation Scholarship in 1999, it
paid for half of my third-year tuition at the University of Illinois College of Law. Today, that
same scholarship would hardly cover the cost of books. The women law students who receive
our scholarships face staggering debt, and we are committed to providing meaningful
financial assistance. Although the Foundation has increased the amount of our scholarships,
we do not come close to half of a year’s tuition at most Illinois law schools. Your generosity
and contributions are essential to making our scholarships significant and meaningful to
women launching themselves into this profession.
This year we will be holding our 2013 Annual Scholarship Awards Event on
October 17, 2013 at the Hotel Palomar, 505 North State Street, Chicago, IL 60654, from
5:30 to 7:30 p.m. We hope that you can join us to witness the caliber of women who receive
the scholarships that are funded by your generous donations. If you cannot attend the event,
we appreciate any donation you can make, and invite you to donate online by visiting our
website at www.illinoiswbf.org (click “Donate”).
I look forward to seeing all of you at this year’s Scholarship Awards Event and
to continuing the Foundation’s great tradition of helping to start motivated, intelligent,
dedicated and hardworking women on their path to becoming successful lawyers.

On January 25, 2013, the Women’s
Bar Association of Illinois (WBAI)
held its annual Rise Up and Reach Back

The award honors Esther Rothstein, the
