• Hebrews 12:24 To Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel. SAT & SUN• MAY 18 & 19, 2013 AM I MY BROTHER’S KEEPER? • GENESIS 4:1-12 I. FROM THE BEGINNING A. THE BIRTH OF CAIN • The Name “Cain” comes from a root meaning “to fashion,” “to shape,” “to give form to.” • Psalm 139:13 For You formed my inward parts; you covered me in my mother's womb. • Verse One Literally Reads “I have gotten a man: YHVH” • What this shows is Eve’s understanding of Genesis 3:15, that a Redeemer Who would come of the Seed of the Woman was to be a God-Man: “I have gotten a man: Jehovah.” • Verse 2 The Birth Of Abel, Whose Name Means Literally “A Breath,” Or “Vanity” • Psalm 144:4 Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow. B. THE HEART OF WORSHIP GOD RECEIVES - verses 3-4 • “In The Process Of Time It Came To Pass” – Literally “at the end of days,” meaning “At a specific appointed time.” • Abel brought his offering. It was different in 2 ways 1) It was the 1st born 2) it was a blood sacrifice. (The fat thereof means the best part also). • Hebrews 11:4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous. (over) • It Was Both A Heart Matter And A Lack Of Faith. C. A MAJOR SIGN SOMETHING IS TERRIBLY WRONG: ANGER - verses 6-7 • “And Cain Was Very Angry…” • Psalm 4: Be angry, and do not sin. Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still. • Ephesians 4:26 “Be angry, and do not sin": do not let the sun go down on your wrath… • God Asks Two Questions: Why Are You Angry, And Why Are You Dejected? • Genesis 4:7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it. • In other words, to do what is right or well means to come God’s way, to offer a proper sacrifice, to obey God’s Word. D. AM I MY BROTHER’S KEEPER? - verses 8-10 • Where Is Abel Your Brother? What Have You Done? • In the Bible, blood is regarded as containing the essence of the soul. Leviticus 17:11 “the soul of the creature is in the blood” • 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. © 2013 Ray Bentley
