Miami-Dade County Public Schools and United
Teachers of Dade reached a Tentative Agreement
which demonstrates our deep admiration and
respect for our teachers and instructional staff.
Perla Tabares Hantman, Chair commends Mr. Alberto M. Carvalho, for
receiving The 2016 Magnet Schools of America Superintendent of the
Year Award.
M.A. Milam K-8 Center hosted the 114th Celebration of “20 de Mayo”,
Cuban Independence Day
The Miami-Dade County Public Schools hosted the
34th Annual National Magnet Schools of America
(MSA) Conference.
District 4 School Highlights
School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman,
Superintendent of Schools Alberto Carvalho,
community leaders, teachers and students at Country
Club Middle School celebrated National Bike to
School Day.
Ben Sheppard Elementary School received the coveted 2016 Magnet
Schools of America Merit Award of Excellence. This award recognizes
the top 5 % of the outstanding magnet schools in the United States.
The Hialeah Gardens Elementary School Mermaids won third place
overall at the Florida Cheer and Dance competition.
Roberth Ramirez, student at Mae M. Walters Elementary School was
the recipient for this Year’s City of Hialeah Educational Merit and
Inspiration (EMI) Student of The Year Award.
District 4 School Highlights
Bob Graham Education Center’s Civic Engagement Academy
eighth-grade students placed third at the “We the People” National
Invitational in Washington D.C.
In honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month, Henry H.
Filer Middle School conducted a Stuffed Toy Animal
Drive to assist the Hialeah Police Department.
Barbara Goleman Senior High School ushered in a one-of-a-kind
program at the start of the 2015-2016 school year, the National
Security Intelligence Magnet, also referred to as The Law
Enforcement.
Marina Cepeda, Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High junior,
was selected as one of the four vice presidents for the Florida
DECA organization for 2016-2017.
Hialeah Senior High School celebrated the academic excellence
of the Class of 2016 with the annual Academic Scholarship Signing
Day. Seventy (70) members of the class signed commitments to the
nation’s top educational institutions.
Westland Hialeah Senior High School was honored during
the month of May by the City of Hialeah for having two
recipients of the City of Hialeah E.M.I. Awards. Rafael
Vazquez, Junior, earned the distinction of Student of the
Year for his innumerable hours of community service and
stellar academic record.

in the 2016 Superintendent’s Honor Choir.

Congratulations to Vanessa Tacon and Christian Hunt students at Jose Marti MAST 6-12 Academy for winning
first place in the district wide Youth Crime Watch Annual Poster Contest.

On May 17, 2016, the Miami Lakes Middle School Girls Basketball Team won the county championship for the
second year in a row.

Barbara Goleman Senior High School is proud to announce that Jonathan Carcache, Jr., has been selected as
an Intern at Fairchild Botanical Gardens for the upcoming summer season.

For the second consecutive year Miami Lakes Educational Center and Technical College (MLEC) student,
Mariah Ospina, was selected as one of the Top 25 nominees for the “2016 NO BULL Challenge”.
