Nome: ___________________________________________________ nº: _______7ano “____” TER – ENGLISH Teacher Josiane Let’s Practice Giant pandas live in forests with a dense presence of bamboo plants in central China. The giant panda, a black-and-white bear, has a body typical of bears. It has black fur on ears, eye patches, muzzle, legs, and shoulders. The rest of the animal's coat is white. The panda's thick, wooly coat keeps it warm in the cool forests of its habitat. Giant pandas have large molar teeth and strong jaw muscles for crushing tough bamboo. About the size of an American black bear, giant pandas are around 1.2 to 1.8 meters long and around 75 centimeters tall at the shoulder. Males can weigh up to 150 kilograms. Females can weigh up to 125 kilograms. Wild giant pandas' diet is 99 percent bamboo plus occasional small rodents. They can eat from 10 to 20 kilograms of bamboo each day. Pandas spend 10 to 16 hours a day seeking food and eating. They spend the rest of their time sleeping and resting. Giant pandas are generally solitary, but cubs live with their mothers from one and a half to three years. The giant panda typically lives around 20 years in the wild and up to 30 years in captivity. Unlike other bears from temperate climates, giant pandas do not hibernate (sleep in winter). They often climb and take shelter or sleep in hollow trees or rock caves but do not establish permanent dens. ______________________________ ________________________________ ______________________________ ________________________________ ______________________________ ________________________________ ______________________________ ________________________________ ______________________________ 4) What does Mary look like? ________________________ ________________________________ ______________ ______________________________ _______________________________ ______________________________ _______________________________ ______________________________ ______________________________ ______________________________ ________________________ ______________________________ ______________________________ ______________________________ ______________________________ ___________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ _______ At birth, the cub (the young little bear) weighs 90 to 150 grams and is about the size of a stick of butter.
