ILLUSTRATIVE TYPOGRAPHY
Definitions……
 Typography is the art and technique of
arranging type, type design, and modifying
type glyphs. Type glyphs are created and
modified using a variety of illustration
techniques.

 An illustration is a displayed visualization
form presented as a drawing, painting,
photograph or other work of art that is
created to elucidate or dictate sensual
information (such as a story, poem or
newspaper article) by providing a visual
representation graphically.
Examples……
The Project
 With the following list of words you must
create an illustrative typographic design.
 You will be creating three (3) separate designs
using “any” typeface that you feel would
benefit your design.
 If any design uses the ‘typeface’ or ‘font’
that you have created for the previous
project, you will receive a bonus mark, but
only if it supports your design.
Project Guidelines
 The instructions for creating each of the three
designs are as follows:
 The first design should support the meaning of the
word. (from the list below)
 The second design should contradict the meaning
of the word. (from the list below)
 The third design you create should either support
or contradict the meaning, and must be a word
that come up with, which is not on the list below.

 For the size of your design, you should complete
some rough work on scarp paper first, the
complete your good copies of each design on a
sheet of 8.5 x 11 paper. Each design should fill
most of the sheet of paper.
 Remember…..your design should be evident in
how it represents the meaning of the word
through demonstration or illustration.
 Don’t forget to write “support”, “contradict”,
and “new creation” on the back of the respective
pieces of work.

 Each design will be marked out of 15, you will
be marked on the following:

