June 10, 2013, Week 6 Welcome! In the Pool Due to the unusual meet schedule, this week’s practice schedule is as follows: Monday – 8:30 & 5:00 for 10 & Unders, 9:30 & 6:00 for 11 & Ups, 10:30 for Guppies Tuesday – 8:30 for 10 & Unders, 9:30 for 11 & Ups, 10:30 for Guppies. 4:00 arrival for all competing in the swim meet. Volunteers need to check in at 5:00 please. Wednesday - 8:30 & 5:00 for 10 & Unders, 9:30 & 6:00 for 11 & Ups, 10:30 for Guppies. We will NOT have Donuts & Ribbons even though we will have just had a meet. We will combine D&R for both meets on Friday, June 14 at 10:00am. Thursday - 8:30 for 10 & Unders, 9:30 for 11 & Ups, 10:30 for Guppies. 4:30 arrival at Stonehaven for all competing in the swim meet. Warm ups start at 4:45pm. Friday – 9:00 swim clinic for all, 10:00 Donuts & Ribbons for both meets. Don’t forget to check in at the Iron Man/Chick board with your ribbons afterwards! Guppy practice at 10:30 Coach’s Corner Welcome officially to summer everyone! With the higher temperatures it is vital that everyone is drinking PLENTY of water so dehydration doesn't occur. Please make sure your swimmers have had a healthy snack before practice in the morning and afternoon; if swimmers come in on a full or empty stomach painful cramps can keep them from doing their best in practice. I am excited to get the summer schedule of two-a-days underway and I'm so pumped for the two meets this week, GO HURRICANES! Thanks for your time, ~Coach Jess Now the summer has really begun, everyone is done with school and now it’s time to really get after things! (Yes, we have started morning practice.) This week is a busy week; we start doubles and we have two meets this week, one on Tuesday and the other on Thursday. Let’s make sure we’re on time for practice and on time for our meet warm-ups. Happy swimming ~Coach Gene Swim suit and Apparel Orders Some of the swim suits were on back order, but should be in in time for the meet. Keep your fingers crossed! They will be brought to the meet. Team & parent T-shirts have arrived! If you have not gotten yours yet, please see me on the pool deck at practice tomorrow. Many thanks to Suzann Adams for donating her time and talent to the T-shirt design! The other apparel items should be in later this week or early next week. Thanks for your patience! Stroke Sign-ups We will be taking stroke sign-ups for Thursday’s meet (at Stonehaven) at practice on Monday, but if you will not be at practice, please email your child’s stroke choices to Eileen Wells at [email protected] right away so she can enter them into the meet. The kids should choose three events. The coaches will select your child’s events if you don’t sign up for them. Our First Meet! As you know, Mother Nature had plans contrary to our last Thursday, and our first meet of the season was cancelled due to bad weather. I wish it hadn’t been; I know what an inconvenience it was – on so many levels, but it really seemed like the best decision at the time for the good of all. Thank you for being flexible and understanding! Our re-do is on Tuesday, June11 against Roper Mountain Estates/Asheton Rec. Please arrive at the pool at 4pm. Our team will warm-up from 4:15 – 4:45. Our visitors will warm up from 4:45 – 5:15. The meet will start at 5:30. Show your team spirit - Wear your Hurricane greens! All stroke & turn officials, timers and recording timers need to be at the pool by 5pm so they can be assigned to a lane, get their stop watch, get head sets and be ready to go by 5:30pm. What to bring… your child will be sitting outside on a pool deck that will start at 90 degrees at 5pm, and end at 65 degrees by 8:30pm, so some warmer clothes for the end of the evening may come in handy. Please bring your child a chair, an extra towel to keep warm, a drink to keep them hydrated, and a snack to munch on during the meet. (Please stay away from chocolate - it melts and makes a mess). A Sharpie marker also comes in handy to write your child’s events on his/her arm. And of course, books, iPods, small handheld video games and toys to keep them occupied while they wait between races are also good ideas. And don’t forget a gift and encouraging note for your Spirit Buddy! The swimmers will sit as a team on the far side of the pool. It is a tight fit for them. Parents may sit along the pool edge near the team area. Parents of 8 & Under swimmers or first time swimmers may want to sit near their children so they feel more comfortable. There will be 80 kids plus parents from HTCC at this meet so it can seem a bit overwhelming. Do not sit your kids in another area of the pool deck with you. There will be a tent parent stationed in the Team Area who will be calling the names of kids who are swimming each event to get them lined up. If your child is somewhere else on the pool deck and not in the team area, the Tent Parent cannot go looking for them. We have had kids miss events when they were sitting with their parents or wandering around the pool deck. If they have to use the rest room, they can tell someone they are leaving and will be back in a few minutes. Please tell your child that he/she needs to stay in the tent area when they aren’t swimming. If they would like to get food from the concession area, please get it for them or make arrangements for someone else to get them food. We don’t want them standing in line for 20-30 minutes waiting on food, when they should be resting for their next event. Non-swimming siblings and visiting friends should sit in the parent section, not in the team area please. Heat sheets will be available for sale - $2 each. This is like a program of the meet. You will want to buy one so you can know when your child is swimming. Heat sheet sales are one of the ways we raise money to buy pizza for our post meet parties, so please do not ask to see one without buying it. We appreciate your support! We also suggest bringing a highlighter so you can mark your heat sheet with the events your child is swimming. There are 80 events and about 8-10 pages of heat sheets so it can get a little confusing if you aren’t used to it. Working the meet - Name tags will be created for all parent volunteers. They show the credentials of parents who have been trained for specific roles in officiating the meet. If you are working at the meet in an official position, please look for our table that will have the name tags, stopwatches, pencils for recording timers, head sets for stroke and turn judges, etc. If you are officiating or working in the first half, please stop at the table to check in as soon as you arrive. Everybody will need to report to their timing or working position by 5:15pm so we can get started on time. Please listen for the meet/official announcements. If you are working the 2nd half of the meet, you will know it is your turn when the starter makes an announcement calling for all 2nd half officials. This will happen at the start of the 11/12 breast stroke. Please be ready to move to your work position at that time. What to Do If It Rains... If it’s raining lightly, the meet will continue. If it thunders, lightening, or is raining hard, we will clear the pool and wait out the rain in the team areas. The lifeguards will make this call. If it thunders loudly close by or lightening, we will clear the pool deck and team areas and have all swimmers and families wait in their cars. Please do not leave. The officials from both teams will be checking the weather and if looks like it will clear up soon, we will keep the meet going. If you have left, you will be scratched from the meet. We will shout the news from car to car like previous years. Please stay close by until you hear a final determination about the meet. We will not be able to make up the meet if it is rained out. Post Meet Party - We will NOT have a pizza party after the Tuesday swim meet. With two meets this week, the kids need the rest in order to do well in the Thursday meet. There will be a post –meet party at Culver’s on Woodruff Rd. after the Thursday meet, which will be at Stonehaven, also on Woodruff Rd. Concessions – The Club will be grilling dinner for us on Tuesday – hamburgers, hot dogs, and veggie burgers. The Team will also be selling concessions. For the three remaining meets, we will be taking concession donations…individually wrapped baked goods, candy, drinks, chips, pop ice, ice cream sandwiches, etc. You may bring your non-perishable concession donations at any time; frozen and baked goods should be brought to the meet. Thanks! Also for sale at the meet will be: swim caps, ribbon books, bungee straps, and other miscellaneous Hurricane items. Come check it out! Meet Volunteer Sign-ups Parents – please go to the team website, www.htccswim.com, and get signed up to work the June 13th meet at Stonehaven! Click on Meet Sign Up and volunteer to help out. We need the parent of every swimmer to work at least one half of each meet. If you are new to the team, don’t worry, there are several easy but important jobs you can do! Meet volunteer pages have been created for all the Hurricane meets, so feel free to sign up for jobs at all the meets! Iron Man/Iron Chick Every year the swim team holds an Iron Man and Iron Chick recognition. Our goal is to have each swimmer learn all the strokes and be able to swim them at least one time correctly in a meet. Therefore, to qualify as an Iron Man or Chick, each swimmer age 9 and older will need to swim each stroke without getting disqualified (DQ’d) in a meet at least once. The strokes they must swim are: Short freestyle, Long freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke, Butterfly and the IM Individual Medley (fly, back, breast, free). Our 8 and Under swimmers are only required to swim 5 of the strokes correctly in a meet in order to qualify. During our donuts and ribbons party each Friday, the kids will show their ribbons and receive a sticker(s) to put on the Iron Man/Chick poster next to their name. This will help them to keep track of which strokes they need to swim at the next meet to earn their Iron Man/Chick award. At our season ending party, we will recognize and reward those kids who achieved their Iron Man/Chick during the season. Upcoming Events Wednesday, June 12 – Spirit Party The guppies are having a triathlon on Wednesday. This will replace our usual spirit party at 5:50-6:10. For the spirit party, we want the Hurricane swim team to come by the triathlon and cheer on the Guppies. The kids that come to cheer will get to join the Guppies for a treat after the triathlon. Eve Herber is managing this activity for us each week this summer. Please contact her if you would like to help out with the spirit parties and/or to donate snacks – I’m sure she wouldn’t mind some assistance with this. Please don’t confuse this party with Spirit Buddies – do not bring your Spirit Buddy gift to the Spirit Party, bring it to the meet on Thursday. Friday, June 14 – Team Greenville Swim Clinic 6 – 7pm at the Westside Aquatic Center, followed by our traditional visit to Dairy Queen! This is a great chance for our swimmers to see the facility where the Championships & Classics meet is held, and to be coached by our coaches’ coaches. (Did that make sense? ) Monday, June 17 – Spirit Trip to Twisted Cup 3pm – Twisted Cup has kindly offered to make a donation to our team when we all come and enjoy their fun and tasty frozen yogurt! Tuesday, June 18 – Coaches Dinner (This is a change of date!) Pease join the Coaches for Pasta Night at the Clubhouse – 6:30pm. You can RSVP for this event on the team website www.htccswim.com. Monday, June 24 – Sips n’ Strokes Back by popular demand! HTCC Ballroom, 1:30. This fun activity is a painting “lesson” for the kids. We will paint a summer themed picture for them to take home. We will have some sweet snacks and lemonade. We will provide all supplies. Anyone interested must sign up on the website www.htccswim.com in advance so that we know how many supplies to purchase. The cost is $5/child. They can pay in advance or at the event. Guppies are welcome to attend. All children under 8 must have an adult stay with them please! Additionally, we will need 5-6 helpers to be at tables watching the kids to make sure they understand what they need to do and to answer any questions. The Guppy Tank Great job to all of our Guppies in the meet against Riverwalk! Everyone swam fantastically; Coach Katie and Coach Alex were so proud! Thank you to all of our parent volunteers, we couldn't have done it without you. -This week remember our morning practice schedule begins! 10:30-1100am DAILY. We practice even if it is sprinkling, but please use your discretion about what is best for your family. If there is obvious thunder and lightning, practice is cancelled as they are required to be out of the water for 20 minutes thus defeating the purpose. -Our first annual Guppy triathlon is Wednesday at 5:50. Bring your child dressed in their swim suit, tennis shoes, and with a bike, trike, or scooter decorated in Holly Tree green!! Think balloons, crepe paper, a sign attached to the front... In the meantime, we will take donations throughout the summer for gift basket items like you see at silent auctions, school fairs, etc. Donations can be gift cards, services, toys & games, whatever you want! I am hoping to form a committee to head up this effort. If you are interested, please let me know! At the Club Come check out the newly renovated Grille Room & Dining Room, and the new summer menu!
