Where can you see Nikki clap her flippers and Raja sway his trunk, Sabia feast on ants and Fola gallop about?
Over 3.5 million visitors know where: the Saint Louis Zoo, of course! The Saint Louis Zoo celebrated another
record-breaking year for attendance in 2012, with Sea Lion Sound playing a starring role.
Splish-Splash!
At its public opening on June 30, nearly 30,000 visitors braved the heat to admire and learn about the Zoo’s
11 sea lions. The 1.5-acre space is a “state-of-the-art sea lion habitat that has changed our Zoo forever,”
said Joseph F. Imbs, III, Chair of The Living Promise Campaign—a $120 million fundraising effort.
Strolling through a 35-foot underwater tunnel—the first of its kind in North America—visitors can admire the sea lions
gracefully swimming in their new saltwater pool. Creating a naturalistic saltwater environment was a priority for the
exhibit. A year-round outdoor pool and rocky outcroppings are features of the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Family Sea Lion
Landing, which resembles the Pacific Northwest.

Naturally playful creatures, the California sea lions are also at home
in the Lichtenstein Sea Lion Arena during the popular First Bank
Sea Lion Show. The superstars amaze cheering crowds in the 811-seat
amphitheater when performing front flipper walks, balancing acts,
hurdle jumps and Frisbee throws on the Ann Lux Family Stage.
This unique stage includes a rock bridge extending into the
audience and a high-dive platform and slide.

The Sea Lion Care Center helps these active animals stay healthy and
fit by providing life support systems, advanced management and care
for marine mammals. The super sea lion team is a lively and integral
part of the Zoo’s more than 19,000 animals, which intrigue and amaze
visitors every day, creating endless opportunities to love and learn
about animals always.

the Saint Louis Zoo Association, a private, nonprofit organization, purchased the site of the former Forest Park
Hospital. Expanding our boundaries to include this 13.5-acre property at Hampton Avenue and Interstate 64
provides an extraordinary opportunity to pursue our critical mission of animal research, education and conservation.

“This is a purchase that will shape our future for decades to come. It is no secret that
our Zoo has long needed additional space for habitats, research—even storage,”
said Jeffrey P. Bonner, Ph.D., Dana Brown President & CEO. The site was purchased
from Medline Industries, Inc. with Association funds, not taxpayer support.

Like all great explorers, we are carefully mapping the course for decades to
come with expert partners by our side. Announced in the fall of 2013, the Zoo’s
expansion framework plan is intended to be a dynamic, living document—
a starting point for long-term growth. It will provide a tool for making decisions
now and well into the future. The Zoo’s staff, volunteer leadership, consultants
and design team worked for several months with the community to define a
common vision for future development of the Zoo. Now that the framework plan
is in place, the Zoo is beginning development of a comprehensive, long-term
master plan and strategic plan. It follows a detailed five-year plan announced in 2008;
the next strategic plan will include select recommendations from the framework plan.

SWT Design—a St. Louis-based firm specializing in urban design, master planning and
landscape architecture—has been leading the planning process while working with local
subconsultants Vector Communications, Horner & Shifrin, Lawrence Group, Crawford Bunte
Brammeier and Cowell Engineering, as well as Chicago-based architect Edward Uhlir,
who helped develop Millennium Park in Chicago.
We are thankful for the support of the St. Louis Zoological Park Subdistrict Commission,
the Saint Louis Zoo Association Board of Directors, the Zoo Museum District Commissioners,
our planning committee of Zoo volunteer leadership, community leaders and many other stakeholders,
as well as our friends and donors. Traveling with an exceptionally dedicated crew, we are confident
and prepared for our expedition ahead. We are ready to build our long-term future together.

Imagine: thriving populations of frogs jumping along the banks of America’s streams, cheetahs racing through the
African savannahs and Humboldt penguins strutting along the Peruvian coast. From the tiny American burying beetle
to the immense black rhinoceros, every animal has a home in the wild. At least if we can help it.
Preserving the Present, Securing the Future
The Saint Louis Zoo is dedicated to making this dream a reality through extraordinary conservation programs. For its
work in 2012, the Zoo earned two coveted awards given by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), a national
organization for global wildlife conservation.
Slithering salamanders were the focus of the Edward H. Bean Award, which was given to the Zoo for its ongoing
“Propagation, Head-start and Conservation Program for the Ozark Hellbender.” A crowning achievement was the
first captive breeding of Ozark hellbenders in 2011 at the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute Ron Goellner Center
for Hellbender Conservation. This prestigious award recognizes the program’s tremendous breeding efforts and
contribution to the understanding of Missouri’s aquatic ecosystem.

Across the globe in Africa, the Zoo has been helping to manage
declining populations of the majestic Grevy’s zebra as a member
of the Grevy’s Zebra Trust, an independent conservation organization.
Engaging with the local community through the Grevy’s Zebra Warrior
Program, supported in part by the WildCare Institute, is one of the key
components of this work. For their innovative efforts, the Zoo and its
26 AZA partners earned the International Conservation Award,
which honored the “Grevy’s Zebra Trust and AZA: A Model of
Collaborative Endangered Species Conservation Program.”
In addition to earning these distinguished awards, the Zoo deserves a
standing ovation for other notable achievements in 2012: the WildCare
Institute helped establish the largest African nature reserve; the Institute
for Conservation Medicine received a $189,000 National Science
Foundation grant; and the Zoo became a founding member of the
consortium behind the International Consortium for Marine Conservation.

With more than 46,500 member households—a record high for total membership—the Saint Louis Zoo was the
place to be in 2012! Our friends shared a passionate love of animals, a strong philanthropic spirit and a steadfast
commitment to the Zoo’s mission.
They had fun, too! From the festive Zootini presented by Macy’s to the special Heritage Society Breakfast event,
friends enjoyed celebrating with fellow civic-minded Zoo supporters. A wild success, A Zoo Ado 2012 presented by
Wells Fargo Advisors raised a record $493,000. Additionally, the Marlin Perkins Society received a huge hip-hiphooray for surpassing its 1,000-member goal in October. Philanthropy was about family, too. Giving spanned
generations as many generous families honored a beloved relative, supported education programs or ensured
future Zoo lovers will experience the wonderful opportunities that they themselves had.

Substantial family donations, along with significant
corporate and individual contributions, continued to
support The Living Promise Campaign, which reached
90 percent of its goal in 2012. Five of nine major
construction projects are completed, including Sea Lion
Sound and Elephant Woods, and four are currently under
construction, including Andean Bear Range, Sun Bear
Forest, Painted Dog Preserve and McDonnell Polar Bear
Point. Over the years, the Zoo has thrived because of the
outstanding contributions of dedicated individuals.
Carol Perkins, widow of former Zoo Director, Marlin Perkins,
was a longtime friend and supporter who will be
remembered fondly. Carol passed away on October 20,
2012. She was an esteemed conservationist, humanitarian,
author, lecturer and photographer. She led dozens of
safaris in Africa, Australia and India, and worked locally
to establish sanctuaries and conservation centers.
Thanks to our friends’ strong commitment to and generous
support of our animals, expanding facility and conservation
efforts, the Saint Louis Zoo continues to thrive as a
nationally recognized organization with a global impact.

In 2012, the Zoo realized a 4.4 percent increase in its net financial position and continued to be a good steward of its
financial resources and to focus on building a sustainable institution into the 21st century. The Zoo remains committed
to being transparent in all financial statements.
Great weather in the spring, fall and early winter seasons of 2012 and the opening of the enormously popular new
Sea Lion Sound exhibit drove record-breaking attendance for the year, surpassing 3.5 million visitors. On average,
guests spent $7.24 per person, per visit, in 2012. This represents a 12-cent increase in per capita spending over 2011.
In 2012, total revenue was up nearly $5 million, or 8 percent, mainly due to solid investment performance and a
13.7 percent increase in visitor spending. While contribution revenue dropped by 29 percent compared to 2011,
that decline was anticipated due to the advanced stage of fundraising with The Living Promise Campaign.
The Zoo has always been a prudent steward of its investments, which include a diversified mix of money market
funds, certificates of deposit, corporate notes, mutual funds, common stocks and U.S. government,
alternative investment funds and agency obligations. At year-end 2012, the Zoo Association’s portfolios
totaled $76.6 million—a $4.6 million increase over year-end 2011 totals.
While U.S. markets at year-end were volatile as politics dominated economic and financial discussions, U.S. equities
provided a positive return for 2012. International equities performed better than U.S. equities due to an improving
political situation in Europe and an improving economic climate in emerging markets. The Zoo’s international
equity investments, particularly in the small cap and emerging markets, were positive contributors for the year.
The allocation to global fixed income strategies also contributed to fund investment performance during the year.

Tax support from the Metropolitan Zoological Park and Museum District rose by nearly one percent over 2011,
contributing $21 million to the Zoo’s total revenue. This support represents approximately one-third of the Zoo’s
total revenue; the 2012 tax rate was 7.69 cents per $100 of assessed property value, versus a 2011 rate of 7.64 cents.
Total contributions remained strong in 2012. Cumulative gifts to The Living Promise Campaign reached
$109 million, but fell short of the 2012 goal by just $1.6 million. This was offset by very strong performance
in other contribution segments.
For example, 2012 Membership gifts of $3.7 million exceeded 2011 by $489,275, or 15 percent. In addition,
the Marlin Perkins Society, for those contributing $1,000 or more annually, reached 1,000 members; these members
gave the Zoo a record-breaking $1.7 million in 2012. A Zoo Ado, the major fundraiser of the year, also raised a record
$493,000 in 2012.

The Zoo’s operating expenses of $56.9 million were up 3.2 percent over 2011. This increase was the result of higher
fringe benefit, merchandise, supplies and depreciation costs. The benefit increase was due to the loss of a
worker’s compensation claims experience rebate earned in previous years and to a rise in insurance premiums.
Merchandise costs rose in line with the increase in revenue and attendance for the food service outlets and gift shops.
Supplies were up due to increased attendance, and depreciation expense rose due to the addition of a number of
construction projects completed during the year.

In 2012, construction was completed on Sea Lion Sound, with $3.9 million of the total $17.9 million project costs
spent in 2012. Construction continued in the North Entrance area where projects included the completion of the Zoo’s
new Treetop Gift Shop and restroom renovations, in addition to work on the Welcome Center. Also in The Living World,
construction began on the new training center and on the Monsanto Education Gallery, which opened in June 2013
to provide space for early childhood education programs.
Construction also began on new River’s Edge animal habitats for Andean bears, Malayan sun bears and painted
dogs—exhibits set to open in 2014. Finally, in 2012, $3.6 million was spent to upgrade the Endangered Species
Research Center and Veterinary Hospital.
Repairs and maintenance costs dropped significantly due to fewer major construction projects completed in 2012
compared to 2011.

During the past decade, the Zoo has enjoyed steady growth in operating revenue. The Zoo’s operating cash flow
has also been positive. Net cash from operating activities decreased $286,614—down 2 percent from the 2011
numbers, primarily due to higher payments to employees and suppliers.
