Shipbuilders Skateboard Around
Obstacles on CVN 72 Catapult Overhaul
On June 12, USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) X11
and X18 shipbuilders from all three shifts were
recognized during a luncheon for their work on
overhauling the ship’s catapults. CVN 72’s catapults were more corroded than previous aircraft
carriers coming in for overhaul. The bottom 22
inches of the catapult trough walls needed to be
cut out and replaced.
The shipbuilders met the challenge with ingenuity, including creating a skateboard conveyor
that could safely transport the 320-pound steel
plates down the catapult without having to
remove the shed and schedule cranes for the
work. The simple contraption saved time and
reduced risk of injury. All four catapults were
finished on schedule except for catapult “number four,” which was completed one month
ahead of schedule.
During the luncheon, on CVN 72’s flight deck,
John Gregory (X11), general foreman overseeing the catapult work, praised the team, “These
guys stepped up to a high-risk job, and made it
look easy.”

Career Pathways Recognizes
Volunteers
Nearly 300 Career Pathways volunteers were recognized for the 20132014 school year with a luncheon on June 19. The luncheon celebrated the volunteers as well as the community partners that helped
Career Pathways reach out to more than 26,000 students throughout
Hampton Roads and more than 1,000 teachers and adult learners.
During the luncheon, Career Pathways Manager Sherri Thompson
(O44) thanked volunteers for an amazing year. Guest speaker Lynn
Showalter (O37) spoke about his interaction with the Early Career
Students and Quentin Jackson from An Achievable Dream Middle/
High School, spoke about the partnership with the Sailors from the
USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) and Career Pathways. The highlight
of the event was the video in which students and teachers personally
thanked the volunteers for all they did this school year.
Watch the video that was shown during the luncheon on Yardnet.

STEM Call-to-Collaboration Conference
Huntington Ingalls Industries hosted a STEM Workforce Call-to-Collaboration conference this week to help increase the quality of science, technology,
engineering and mathematics education and the quantity of STEM-educated graduates for the future workforce. The two-day conference featured insight from HII President and CEO Mike Petters, Newport News Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin and Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), who provided
a keynote address via video.
Sponsored by the National Defense Industrial Association and the Aerospace Industries Association, the quarterly Call-to-Collaboration meetings aim
to foster regional and statewide communication between education stakeholders and STEM employers such as HII. The goal of the conference is to
explore ways of partnering with elementary, secondary and post-secondary education to produce the 21st century STEM workforce.

NNS Hosts Industry Days
Energy and Integration Programs (K03) and Industrial Projects (K81) hosted an Industry Days
event for Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc. (Jacobs) and the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC)
personnel on June 9 and 10 at VASCIC. The purpose of the two-day event was to provide Jacobs
and NASA with a better understanding of Newport News Shipbuilding’s special skills, capabilities,
and toolsets that can support the contract awarded to Jacobs by NASA. The contract is to provide
Center Maintenance, Operations and Engineering (CMOE) to NASA LaRC located in Hampton.
Pete Diakun, vice president of Energy and Integrations Programs, and Ken Mahler, vice president of Navy Programs, kicked off the event with an overview of NNS capabilities and connections
to the local NASA LaRC facility.

Diakun kicked off Industry Days by giving an overview of
NNS capabilities and NNS connections to the local NASA
LaRC facility. Photo by John Whalen
“In addition to our similar capabilities, Jacobs and NASA view our close proximity to the NASA LaRC
campus as invaluable in terms of having a major industrial partner in their backyard,” Bob Ernsting, the event organizer and NNS point of contact to Jacobs for CMOE said, “Additionally, similar
to NNS, NASA shares a rich family legacy with many generational ties to the Hampton Roads area.
Whether it’s a spouse, family member or friend, many NNS employees have some connection with
NASA LaRC. The NNS CMOE subcontract with Jacobs further helps to support our company’s initiatives of expanding its core business into markets outside of U.S. Navy shipbuilding.”

Fishing Trip
The Apprentice School Students Association (ASSA),
held its annual Father’s Day Fishing Trip in Hatteras,
North Carolina on June 14. Students, alumni, faculty
and staff were invited to bring guests and try their

fishing poles and the rest was left to skill.
Gary Garner and his father caught enough fish to
fill a cooler and also the largest fish of the trip. Garner is a senior apprentice and will walk in the 2015
Apprentice School Graduation Ceremony.
