THE DESCENDANTS OF TIMOTHY DESMOND AND ELLEN MCCARTHY
COUNTY CORK, IRELAND TO BROOKLYN, KINGS COUNTY, NEW YORK

Some say that Timothy Desmond (1.001) was born in Clonakilty, County Cork, Ireland in about 1838 and was the son of Daniel Desmond and
Ellen Sullivan Others say that his mother was Catherine Mahony, and when she died, his father married Ellen Sullivan, who raised Timothy and
his siblings. There are several problems these two scenarios. First, there is no evidence that links the Timothy Desmond who died in Brooklyn,
New York on 10 Jan 1910 with the Timothy who was born in Clonakilty--there are no known documents that give Clonakilty as his birthplace.
Second, the parish registers that exist do not contain any record of a marriage between Daniel Desmond and Ellen Sullivan, nor any record of the
baptism of any children named Desmond whose parents bore those two names. The name of Timothy's godmother on his baptismal record is
Ellen Breal--not Ellen Sullivan, as claimed by some. There is a marriage record for Daniel Desmond and Catherine Mahoney on 11 Feb 1834 in
Clonakilty and baptismal records for the following children that list them as parents: (1) Daniel Desmond, bap. 6 Mar 1835; (2) Mary Desmond,
bap. 22 Nov 1836; (3) Timothy Desmond, bap. 14 Jan 1838; (4) Catherine Desmond, bap. 16 Mar 1840; (5) Mary Desmond, bap. 17 May 1842,
(6) Catherine Desmond, bap. 27 Apr 1846; and (7) Bridget Desmond, bap. 7 Jan 1852. None of the siblings of the Timothy Desmond who was
born in Clonakilty has been located in the U.S.

"TIMOTHY DESMOND. Timothy Desmond, a retired stevedore, for sixty-five years living in one section of the Twelfth Ward and one of its most highly respected citizens, died at his
home, 449 Columbia Street, Monday. He had just returned from visiting a bereaved family as was his custom every Monday, when he was stricken with final illness. His daily
recreation for years was driving fast horses down the Ocean Parkway, and he was known to all the owners of trotting horses in Brooklyn, being a familiar figure at all trotting meets.
Years ago Mr. Desmond was one of the best known stevedores along the river front. He had been a member of the Church of the Visitation since the establishment of the parish and
was a trustee of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Holy Name Society. He belonged to many other Catholic societies in which he was a faithful worker. He leaves five sons,
Daniel, Timothy E., Matthew, Dennis and Francis; two daughters, Mrs. M. B. McPartland and Mrs. Thomas A. Clark; twenty-two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was a
native of County Cork, Ireland, and came to Brooklyn when a lad. A requiem mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Visitation to-morrow morning at 10 o'clock. Interment at Holy

"Sgt. M. V. Desmond Casualty in Italy. Tech. Sgt. Morgan Vincent Desmond, a ski trooper with the mountain infantry was killed in action in Northern Italy Feb. 20, [sic] his wife,
Mrs. Mary Jo Madden Desmond, has been notified. He was the son of Timothy E. and Mrs. Eva C. Desmond of 475 2d St,, Brooklyn. Born here, he was educated at St. Francis
Xavier parochial school and Manual Training High School, and in 1940 was graduated from Manhattan College, where he was a member of the Pen and Sword Club and in his senior
year was manager of the football and swimming teams. Active in the Gaelic League of New York, he was employed by the Board of Education as a playground instructor when he
entered the army two years ago. He went overseas in December. Besides his wife and parents, he is survived by a son, Morgan J., three sisters, Mrs. William F. Nickerson, Mrs.
Harold S. Moriarty and Patricia Desmond, and three brothers, Lt. Timothy G. and Sgt. Benedict V. with the army, and John J. A solemn mass of requiem will be offered next Saturday

DESMOND, Helen (Agnes)--Helen (Agnes) Desmond, 82, of Glastonbury, the wife of Benedict Desmond, died Tuesday, (November 5, 2002) in Saint Francis Hospital and
Medical Center. Born in Brooklyn, NY, daughter of the late John and Mary (Conroy) Gordon, she lived in St. James, NY most of her life. Helen worked as a secretary for The McGraw
Hill Publishing Company prior to raising her family. Helen leaves her five sons, Kevin and his wife, Sheila of Glastonbury, Brian and his wife Maribel of Ft. Stockton, TX., John and his
wife, Vicki of Middlebrook, VA, Thomas and his wife, Marcie of Charlestown, MA and Francis of Fitchburg, MA; a daughter, Mary Desmond Funk, of Stuart, FL; and a brother, Thomas
Gordon of Forest Hills, NY;18 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sons, Timothy and Gerard Desmond. The funeral
will be held on Thursday November 7, at 10:15 a.m. from the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd. Wethersfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. in St. Paul

"James J. "Jay" Desmond passed away peacefully on October 14, 2011, in Albuquerque, NM. He had previously made his home in Wenatchee with his much loved wife, Shirley,
who predeceased him. Jay met Shirley on this July day at Lake Chelan and they married three days later. It was WWII and Jay, as a merchant seaman, had to return to the Pacific
war zone. When the War ended, Jay and Shirley resided in Brooklyn, NY, New Jersey and various other states, finally returning to Wenatchee in 1990, to enjoy their retirement. He is

McPartland was born in Brooklyn and was one of the last of the master horseshoers of the 90's. He was born in the old 6th Ward and leaves his widow, Mrs. Mary E. Desmon
