SEMINAR PREVIEW
By. Attorney Peter A. Keon
Every March, I go on my annual baseball "pilgrimage" to Florida, traveling from
one major league spring training camp to another. (If you missed my previous
story, click here).
This year, however, I broke my routine. Once I heard that Cuba was again open
to U.S. tourists, I decided to spend a few days there. For me, this was a very exciting prospect, as I hadn't been to a foreign country (other than Canada and
Mexico) for many years - - and this was the first time ever that I was going to
visit a communist country! Plus, Cuba had been basically cut off from most of
the world since the 1960 embargo, so there was even more mystery as to what I
would find.
Little did I know I was about to enter . . . a Time Warp!
Everywhere I went around Havana I saw "classic" American cars from the '40s
and '50s, kept up in almost pristine working condition.

It's remarkable how people there kept these cars running for all these
years. It was probably a necessity, given that most Cuban people don't
have a lot of money and a car is a very important possession to have.
Apparently, they used Russian parts or whatever they could fashion
themselves. It may not be that unusual to see these kinds of antiques at
U.S. car shows or occasionally driving on our streets, but it's a whole lot
different seeing streets full of them being used as normal, daily transportation!

And another oddity there was the currency - - two of them!
Cuba actually uses, at the same time, two different types of money! One
is the peso and the other is the CUC, which is convertible to pesos. Apparently, the pesos is what the locals use, such as to purchase their
basic food stuffs (sort of a government allotment like food stamps). Foreigners mainly use the CUC, which is worth a lot more. Unfortunately,
most locals make the equivalent of only about twenty-five dollars a
month in pesos, so they can't even buy CUCs. But those who are industrious and grab the tourism jobs - - taxi drivers, souvenir merchants,
restaurant owners - - are making a lot better money, in CUCs. Apparently people are experiencing some more "capitalist" freedom and they
can now make money in non-traditional ways. But they do have a marketing challenge because. . .
There are hardly any visible billboards, ads or signs!
There's very little advertising in Havana, certainly not the commercialization we're familiar with in American cities (a subtle reminder that
Cuba still is a communist country). There are lots of plain looking (and
sometimes dilapidated) buildings and you just have to wander around
and search things out. There actually are lots of restaurants, as many
people have converted their homes into them, and it's well worth the
search because the food was very, very good. Rice, beans, and plantains
(like bananas) are staples, with so many varieties of mixtures with beef,
chicken and fish. I loved the food!
I was expecting to study Cuban history, but instead I got. . .
I went with a group that included a Spanish speaking guide and during
our trip we also had a professor teach us about Cuba's current situation
as well as its history. We learned about the earlier Spanish colonial days
in the 1500s, to the transition to U.S. rule as a result of the SpanishAmerican War of 1898, to Castro's revolution that brought down Batista on January 1, 1959 (and drove Americans to suddenly flee on New
Year's Eve)! The Havana fortress and the statues throughout the city
commemorating Cuban history are definitely worth checking out!
Ironically just as I was immersed into Cuban history, I was about to
encounter (or almost encounter) something more Americana than just
cars. I coincidentally arrived right after President Obama visited and
attended a Major League Baseball/Cuban National Team exhibition
game (I wish I had known about that before I planned the trip) but,

fortunately, I did get to enjoy some good old Rock n' Roll.
Just before I arrived in Cuba, I heard that The Rolling Stones were going to
hold a free impromptu concert in Havana! When I inquired about tickets, I
was told there weren't any available. Later, I learned why--the concert was
free not only for the locals but for anyone who wanted to attend. On the night
of the concert, I only had to ask about it and was instructed by some locals to
walk to a large and open field nearby- -here I joined more than half a million
people who had shown up! Mick Jagger spoke Spanish to the crowd and they
loved it! And the show was great!

Oh, yes, the Florida baseball was fantastic too!
At my very first exhibition game, I got a great seat near the field. I noticed
someone ask a player for an autograph and when I walked over to see who he
was, it was Mike Schmidt! (You need to realize I grew up a big Phillies fan
and he was one of my heroes! He hit 548 home runs and arguably was the
best third baseman in the history of baseball). I usually use just one ball for
autographs until it's signed by a number of players and is "full". This time I
decided to only have Mike Schmidt's autograph on that ball and after the
game I bought a special case just for that Hall of Famer's autograph!

Best of all, I got to enjoy a mini Family Reunion
As is my routine, I visited my Mom and Dad who live in Florida during the
winter time. I was glad I did because my Dad is finding it harder to get
around. While I was there, my father's sister and her daughter, as well as my
sister, flew down from the Northeast to join us. We had a great get-together.
And my Mom and sister went along with me on my Cuba adventure!
