Codington Conservation District Board of Supervisors
May 8, 2017
The Codington Conservation District supervisors met in the NRCS/CD building at 8:34am with
Chairman Ken Bunde calling the meeting to order. Others in attendance were Brian Robertson,
Mike Paulsen, Sandy Law, Verlyn Nordseth, Ken Kittleson, Kevin Kranz (District Tech), Nicolle
Zubke (District Manager), and Jim Dylla (DC for Codington County). Also in attendance was
Brenda Hanten (Codington County Commissioner). Absent were Jim Comes and Bonnie
Oletzke.
Pat Rickerl with AFLAC made his presentation and left information for the board to review.
Pat left meeting; no further discussion was held in regards to AFLAC.
Motion by Robertson, seconded by Paulsen, to approve April’s minutes: motion carried.
Motion by Robertson, seconded by Paulsen, to approve April’s financial statement; motion
carried.
NRCS Report-given by Jim Dylla. CRP Update-Completed 11 CRP plans since previous meeting.
FSA is projecting they will meet their national CRP cap by the end of May. EQIP UpdateCompleted and ranked 3 Soil Health Initiative applications. CSP Update –11 of the 15
applications were preapproved for contracting. Working on planning/contracting, which will
take time. SDACD Contribution Agreement Opportunity- opportunity to earn small amount of
money for helping the NRCs office. The deadline is May 26th, Jim and Nicolle will work on.
District Services- Given by Kevin. Will start cleaning today, will be slow going until trees are
planted. They have about 3-4 days of planting trees in, roughly 18 acres. Dave is out moving the
drill around and working on CRP seeding. Hand auger broke, Kevin presented quote for a new
one from Ron’s Saw Shop. Motion by Robertson, seconded by Paulsen to look into a new auger
and purchase one; motion carried. Kevin and Verlyn left the meeting at 9:45 to head out to plant
trees.
Office Update- Given by Nicolle. Employee lunch, employees will be paid for their lunches as
always, board requests they document their lunch breaks though. We are currently member of
the Chamber of Commerce and will look into a ribbon cutting at the sheds with an open house
once planting and fabric are done. Larry Bergh with Grass Lake Conservation Club requested
assistance with sponsoring a camper for SDWF Camp. Motion by Robertson, seconded by
Paulsen, to sponsor the camper request; motion carried. Zubke reported that she did an Arbor
Day presentation at two of the elementary schools, and went to the Watertown Middle School to
assist with mock interviews. Some more discussion was held on what to do in honor of the
District’s 75 years.
The next meeting date was tentatively set for June 5th at 8:00am. With no further business to
discuss the meeting was adjourned at 11:00am.
