Trendy Sandy
I know a lady named Sandy
She is so sweet like candy
A woman who is fine and dandy
Pretty special and very handy
She is mellow like good brandy
Her hair is wavy not strandy
No words from her are blandy
Smiles bigger than the Rio Grandee
She always seems to bring glee
I feel it when she’s around me
She flies like a butterfly and stings like a
bee
If you could see what I see
Your jaw would drop and go gee
This darling knows how to be free
Joy and goodness are the fruit of her
tree
Once you’ve known her welly
You’ll feel a tickle in the belly!
My Night on the Couch at Sandy’s by Holly Roff
Special Lady by Claudio Guardiola
I slept very well on the couch
at Sandy’s house.
Sandy drank coffee this morning,
and went to the doctor for her knee.
Seems she is OK to me,
but you never know…
She is gone now, but we all still love her
Let’s all pray for her,
her dog, Blossom is pretty.
I can’t wait to see her dog again soon.
I wouldn’t spend the night again soon,
but I had fun all the same.
Let’s hear it for the Austin Clubhouse
I hope we all had fun.
This is my poem
I hope you like it too.
Pray for me at New Braunfels on Labor Day,
at my family reunion.
Pray I see everyone, stay safe,
and not be left at HEB again
Love always,
Holly

My Story By Ch eryl F r ie d man
Hello, my name is Cheryl Friedman and I would like to tell you about the
Austin Clubhouse and how it has helped me:
I grew up in Houston, Texas and even at an early age I believed I was
different and didn’t fit in anywhere. I used to climb the pine trees in our front yard to hide and watch the world go by. After years of alcoholism, I got sober
and still did not feel ok until I went to get mental health help.
Last year, my son and I moved to Austin leaving all of my friends and
support system (whom I call “my peeps”). I was lost and lonely frantically looking for a job. Frustrated by waiting for hours for a computer in a very
noisy public library, I found out about the Austin Clubhouse.
So, using the Austin Clubhouse for the computer, I saw $1.00 healthy
lunches being served so I stayed. The $1.00 lunch was a welcomed meal, since
I was completely broke and the lunch was healthy so that helped me with my
binge eating and junk food habit.
The Austin Clubhouse has so much to offer with self-advocacy, chores to
sign up for, employment finding groups, growing and tending to our own
garden for the lunches, a wide variety of art groups which is fun, and field
trips. I especially like Thursday night dinner and a free movie night.
Mostly, I just like making friends and having a place to go so I do not
isolate and get depressed. Also, helping out in the advocacy group has really
helped my self-esteem.
So now I do not have to climb pine trees to hide and watch the world go by
because I felt I don’t fit in or belong, because I will always have the awesome Austin Clubhouse.

My Sister Griselda By Maria Castillo
This is a story about my sister Griselda. She has a good sense of humor, is fun to be
around and is very resilient. I
remember when we were growing up, we used to play house, play school, play
beauty shop. One time, we were outside and we decided to eat honey from the honeysuckles from my neighbor’s driveway. We almost got stung by a bee! We used to play with crickets. Many times, when mom was cooking dinner I thought, “she’s taking too long.” So I would ask Griselda, “is the coast clear?” She said yes, so when mom wasn’t looking, she would steal little cans of orange juice, wieners and cheese and we’d eat them. But we didn’t spoil our supper, we always got in so much mischief.
Now she’s grown up to be a beautiful young lady and is married with two children. I wish I could see her more often. Griselda has so much to offer in life and is a blessing.

Austin Clubhouse Fourth of July Picnic
Good times were had by all at the Austin Clubhouse’s 4th of July Picnic this year. With over 30 members in attendance,
guests were treated to great food, great music, and great
friendship, all under festive decorations celebrating America’s birthday. Clubhouse member Martha Joyner and her husband Tim provided their grill and cooked burgers and hot
dogs outside in the beautiful weather, and members were
treated to outdoor serving tables. After lunch, the celebration was topped off with an American flag cake. Thanks to
the efforts of all the members who helped make this a holiday to remember, and we are looking forward to doing it next
year!

Community Outreach at the Austin Clubhouse
Since starting work at the Austin Clubhouse a little over a month ago, I have been closely involved with our members’ speakers bureau. This group, known at the Clubhouse as the Advocacy/
Community Outreach Committee, meets ever Tuesday to plan our next speaking engagements, recap and improve upon previous efforts, and practice telling our stories about the impact of the Clubhouse. The members use the Benevon template “Stages of an Essential Story” to craft compelling, deeply personal stories that are designed to inspire interest from the community.
I have been greatly appreciative of and thoroughly impressed by the commitment of Austin
Clubhouse members to telling effective personal stories. The Advocacy/Community Outreach Committee has been proactive about practicing their stories and identifying opportunities for us to deliver presentations. In my first week as an employee of the Austin Clubhouse, several members,
Amanda Royston, and I gave a presentation in an Austin Community College occupational therapy
class. Our message seemed to really resonate with our audience, and several of them attended a
Clubhouse open house a few weeks later. Recently, we travelled to the largest outpatient VA clinic in
the United States to tell our stories and share our program. The audience was large and we believe
that we have the opportunity to learn from the feedback and harness the resulting interest in the
Clubhouse. Members have also become involved and active in the emerging Texas Clubhouse Coalition, which aims to speak with one voice on behalf of Clubhouses in Texas.
I am so excited to be working for the Austin Clubhouse and facilitating this Advocacy Committee. Please reach out to me if you have ideas on how I can help the Austin Clubhouse achieve all of
its goals.

Another thing about La Via Sana is the activities that they do with us here at Austin Clubhouse, such as
Health & Wellness trivia. They even organized a retreat for us out in Dripping Springs, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I didn’t even want to leave! They were very gracious in letting us come to their home out in Dripping Springs and putting on the retreat. We had lots of delicious healthy food and good activities. I love La Via Sana!
I would like to take a moment to write about La Via Sana. They are advocates for whole health who come
