Tuesday 23 February 2016 (Term 1 Week 4)
Mālō e lelei (hello everyone - Tongan),
Thank you very much to everyone who attended Community Kai Time last week. It was lovely to see
so many of you there and I really enjoyed meeting many of you. The event was a great way for
teachers and families to interact in an informal way, as positive home/school relationships are
important to help improve student achievement. Thanks also to those who have taken the time to give
us feedback on the school vision. The display is now in the office foyer and will remain there until the
end of the week so if you have a few spare minutes pop in and have a look. The family movie pass
was won by Debbie Wilson.
Concerns with other children
Please note that if you have any issues or concerns about other children the correct procedure is to
talk to a teacher rather than approach the child yourself. If something happens during the school day
teachers are trained in how to deal with the incident appropriately, and parents interfering can
escalate the problem. If you are not happy with how the incident has been dealt with please contact
the teacher directly - not the child. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.
School Gates Closed
We are trying to keep the school gate on Eltham Road and the small Whitney Street gate closed
from 9am until 3pm as we have some young children who are prone to roaming. For safety reasons
please ensure that you shut the gates during these times. We are in the process of having signs made
to remind everyone.
Sign In and Out Book
Another safety practice that we legally need to implement is a Sign In and Out Book so that
everyone, including visitors, are accounted for while on the school site. Please ensure that if you take
your child to an appointment during the day that you sign them out in the book on the office counter,
and when they return please sign them back in again. Thank you.
Have a great week,
Cheryl
Community Kai Time By Mark,
Nikau Room 2
On Tuesday I went to the
Community Kai Time. I went to the
swimming pool and I did belly
flops. It hurt a lot. Before that I
went to see the bunny hole but it
was not there. I put my hand in
there to check. We went back
from the bunny hole and had our
food. I had a mince and cheese
pie. It was YUM! Then I sat
down and had a rest. When I
got back up I played on the rope
swing. I saw Joseph, Kalani,
Carly and Alex. I saw Ms
Anderson chatting to my Mum. I
saw Mrs Wadworth chatting to
everyone. Community Kai Time
was a fantastic night of fun.

We have had confirmed cases of School Sores (Impetigo) and Hand, Foot and Mouth at
Whitney Street School last week.
School Sores - Signs: Scabby sores on exposed parts of the body and these are highly
contagious. Please check if your child has these symptoms and seek advice from your
doctor. Treatment is with antibiotics. Children can return to school 24 hours after treatment
with antibiotics has started or once sores are healed.
Hand, Foot and Mouth – Signs: Sudden onset of symptoms and signs that may include: fever,
sore throat, headache, small, painful blisters in the mouth and, red papules that turn into
blisters around the lips and on the body especially palms, fingers and soles of feet. Children
may need some time off from school or childcare to recover and stop the spread, but they
don't often need medical intervention or medicine. Some children may be infected but have
no symptoms.
Parent Support Group
This group of wonderful parents is commonly referred to as The PSG. They organise our
Lights Over Marlborough fireworks fundraiser in November. They also make candy floss
throughout the year for other schools and events. This year we are looking for a parent to
help co-ordinate the candy floss. It is an easy role and by the sounds of the laughter that
comes from the hall kitchen, a lot of fun. Full training will be given so please let Tanya in the
office know if this is the kind of role you could donate your time too.
Parent Support Group AGM
New members are most welcome to attend the AGM. This will be held on Wednesday 24
February at 7pm in the school staffroom.
Friday Pizza orders
The PSG also organise the pizza lunches on a Friday. This starts this Friday. We are after
another two parents to be part of this roster. It involves collecting the orders from the
classrooms just after 9am, collating and placing the order with Dominoes, collecting the order
about 12:45pm and serving to the children from 1pm. This is another easy way to donate
time to our school. Please let Tanya know if you are interested.
Friday Pizza order. Please hand in your order and money to your classroom teacher before school.

add your child’s last name as reference so we know who to apply the credit to.
