11. An ISJB150 is used as a pin ended column of 1.8m length. Calculate the safe load on the column using a
factor of 3. The properties of ISJB150 are A = Ixx = 3. 22 x 10 6 mm4 and Iyy = 9.2 x 104 mm4.
Take E = 2.1 x 105 N/mm2.
12. A castiron hollow circular section has 300mm external diameter and 25mm thickness. It carries a vertical load
of 100KN at an eccentricity of 300mm. Calculate the maximum and minimum normal stresses induced in the
section.
13. A trapezoidal dam 2.5m wide at top,5.5m wide at the base is 15m high. It retains water to a depth of 12m on
its vertical face. check the stability of the dam for overturning and sliding. If µ = 0.6 and F.O.S = 1.5. Take
weight of Masonry as 24 KN/m3 and that of water as 9.81 KN/m3.
14. A trapezoidal retaining wall 1 m wide at top, 3m wide at the base and 7.5m high has a vertical face retaining
earth level with the top of the wall. Calculate the maximum and minimum intensities of stresses at the base.

7. a) A simple „U‟ tube manometer containing mercury is connected to a pipe in which fluid of sp.gravity 0.8 and having
vaccum pressure is flowing. The other end of the manometer is open to atmosphere. Find the vaccum pressure in the
pipe, if the difference of mercury level in the two limbs is 400mm and the height of liquid in the left limb from centre
of pipe is 150mm. Find the absolute pressure.

b) A circular plate 3m dia is immersed in oil of specific gravity 0.9in such a way that its greatest and least depth
below free surface of oil are 6m and 2.5m respectively. Find the total pressure on the side of the plate and
position of depth of centre of pressure.
8. a) A sluice gate is 2m wide and 1.2m height his in a vertical plane and is hinged at the bottom. There is a liquid
on the upstream side of the gate which extends 1.5m above the top of the gate and has a sp.gravity 1.45.
On the d/s side of the gate there is water upto the top of the gate. Find the resultant pressure acting on the gate
and the position of centre of pressure from the base.

b) A concrete dam of trapezoidal section having water on vertical face is 12m high. The base of the dam is 8m
wide and top 4.5m. Find the resultant thrust on the base and the point where the resultant cuts the base. The
water level is coinciding with the top of the dam. Take the weight of concrete as 25 KN/m3.
9. a) A 500mm and 250mm venturimeter is provided in a vertical pipe line carrying oil of specific gravity 0.9,the
flow being upwards. The difference in elevation of throat section and entrance section of the venturimeter is
400mm. The differential „U‟-tube mercury manometer shows a gauge deflection of 300mm. Find the
discharge of oil and the pressure difference between the entrance and throat section. Take the co-efficient of
the meter as 0.98

b) A rectangular orifice of 1.5m wide and 1.2m deep is fitted in one side of large tank. The water level on the
side of the orifice is 2m above the top edge of orifice. While on the other side the water level is 0.4m below
its top edge. Calculate the discharge through the orifice if cd = 0.62
10. a) Find the head lost due to friction by chezy‟s formula in a pipe of dia 300mm and length 50m through which
water is flowing at a velocity of 5m/s Take C = 50
