Spring 2013 Commencement
Welcome from the Chancellor
On behalf of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point,
I welcome you to our Spring 2013 Commencement Ceremony.
Commencement is one of our most time-honored and cherished
traditions, one we have practiced for 118 years.
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point held its initial
commencement ceremony on June 26, 1895. Dr. Benjamin S. Terry
of the University of Chicago spoke on the topic, 'What is An
Education?' and seven elementary education graduates
received diplomas.
Today we will honor more than 1,345 students, their families and
supporters as they celebrate this major achievement. They will hold
degrees from a university that now boasts four academic colleges
Bernie L. Patterson
and more than 100 program choices within 58 majors, 79 minors
and 13 graduate programs. We congratulate our students, and all
who have made it possible, for their achievements, learning and rigorous work.
Completing a university degree is a major accomplishment, one achieved with
significant sacrifices by the students themselves and also by their families, associates and
friends. It is my honor to present these students to you so you may share in the great joy
of their success on this special day.
I thank our faculty and staff members today as well. Through their dedication and
mentorship, they have broadened our students' intellectual horizons, contributed to
many happy memories, and most importantly, they have transformed lives.
It is my pleasure to confer these degrees and to honor our Spring 2013 graduates
through this most magnificent of UW-Stevens Point traditions.
Sincerely,
~u~
Bernie L. Patterson

The Albertson Medallion was established in 1967 as a memorial to James H. Albertson,
eighth president of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. These students have
distinguished themselves as true leaders within the academic and co-curricular activities
of our university and community. In awarding the medallions, the students, faculty and
staff members of UW-Stevens Point express their great pride in the accomplishments
of the graduates during their college experience. The Albertson Medallion further
suggests an anticipation of the significant achievement which we believe lies ahead
for these recipients.

Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps at UW-Stevens Point is a two, three or four-year
program that ultimately leads to a Commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States
Army. Students enroll in ROTC's elective leadership and military courses in addition to
their required courses. The program teaches leadership skills to be successful in a college,
military and civilian career. Participants are also eligible to earn a minor in military science.
ROTC also offers valuable scholarships for scholars and leaders. Scholarship recipients
receive full tuition and fees, a monthly stipend and other financial benefits throughout the
academic year.
Honor Designations
Undergraduate Honors
The faculty has established a program of academic honors to recognize undergraduate
students for outstanding academic achievement.
There are three levels of undergraduate academic honors, which are awarded on the
basis of grade point average for all courses attempted. Those students graduating
Cunr Laude have achieved an overall grade point average of 3.5 to 3.74; those graduating
Magna Cum Laude have earned an overall grade point average of 3.75 to 3.89; and those
achieving an overall grade point average of 3.9 or above have earned the Summa Cunr Laude
designation.
Phi Kappa Phi
Phi Kappa Phi is a national honor society that encourages superior scholarship in all
academic disciplines and recognizes those persons of good character who have excelled in
scholarship. The names of those students who have earned this distinction are noted in the
commencement program.

History
The origins of the academic dress date back to the 12th and 13th centuries when
universities were beginning to form. It is still open to question as to whether academic
dress finds it sources chiefly in ecclesiastical or civilian dress. It is often suggested that
gowns and hoods were the simplest, most effective method of staying warm in the
unheated, stone buildings that housed medieval scholars.
In the days of King Henry VIII of England, Oxford and Cambridge first began prescribing
a definite academic dress and made it a matter of university control to the extent of its
minor details. The assignment of colors to signify certain faculties was to be a much later
development and one which was to be standardized only in the United States in the late
19th century. An Intercollegiate Commission comprised of representatives of leading
institutions met at Columbia University in 1895 and adopted a code of academic dress,
which besides regulating the cut and style and materials of the gowns, prescribed the colors
which were to represent the different fields of learning.
In 1959, a Committee on Academic Costumes and Ceremonies, appointed by the American
Council on Education, again reviewed the costume code and made several changes. In 1986,
the committee updated the code and added a sentence clarifying the use of the color dark
blue for the Doctor of Philosophy degree.

The Gown
Pattern. Gowns recommended for use in the colleges and universities of the United
States have the following characteristics. The gown for the baccalaureate degree has
pointed sleeves and is designed to be worn closed. The gown for the master's degree
has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist. The sleeve base hangs down in the traditional
manner. The rear part of its oblong shape is square cut, and the front part has an arc cut
away. The gown for the doctor's degree has bell-shaped sleeves.
Material. As a means of adaptation to climate, the material of the gowns may vary
from very light to very heavy provided the material, color and pattern follow the
prescribed rules.
Color. Black is most common although some universities have adopted a different color.
Trimmings. Gowns for the baccalaureate or master's degrees are untrimmed. For the
doctoral degree, the gown is faced down the front with black velvet, and three bars of
velvet are used across the sleeves. These facings and crossbars may be of velvet of the
color distinctive of the disciplines to which the degree pertains, thus agreeing in color
with the binding or edging of the hood appropriate to the particular doctoral degree in
every instance.
The Hood
Linings. The hoods are to be lined with the official color or colors of the institution which
granted the highest degree held by the wearer; more than one color is shown by division
of the field color in a variety of ways such as by chevron or chevrons.
Trimmings. The binding or edging of the hood is to be velvet or velveteen, two inches,
three inches and five inches wide for the baccalaureate, master's and doctoral degrees,
respectively; the color should be indicative of the subject to which the degree pertains.

Chancellor's Medallion and the Ceremonial Mace
The Chancellor's Medallion and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
Ceremonial Mace were both handcrafted by Henry M. Runke, former chairman of the
UW-Stevens Point Art Department. The medallion was cast in a 14k gold pendant in 1968
and contains a purple amethyst to represent the school colors. The four-sectioned areas
beginning near the center symbolize the four colleges of the university and terminate as
prongs for the gem. The mace, carried by the grand marshal in academic processions,
was completed in 1976 and has a square base on which important dates from the school's
history are recorded. The most prominent feature is the head of the mace which is a
miniature of the cupola on Old Main, the university's symbol. The inside of the mace
also contains a purple amethyst.

University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
Alumni Association
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Alumni Association welcomes our Spring 2013
graduates to the ranks of UW-Stevens Point alumni. No matter where life may lead our
graduates, they will always have a home at UW-Stevens Point.
The Alumni Association strengthens the ties with more than 77,000 Pointer alumni and
their university home. Our alumni are among the university's most important ambassadors
and are a major force in shaping the reputation of UW-Stevens Point.
The association helps alumni stay in touch with former classmates and friends through
a variety of services including alumni reunions, homecoming, alumni travel, an online
alumni directory and other communications and special events.
Support for the Alumni Association is provided in part by the UWSP Foundation, the
UW-Stevens Point administration, proceeds from an alumni endowment and by gifts from
alumni and friends.
To learn more about the Alumni Association and its Board of Directors, contact
the Alumni Affairs Office at 715-346-3811 or 877-764-6801, [email protected], or visit
www.uwsp.edu/ alumni.
Please join us for a reception honoring the class of 2013 at the DeBot Dining Center
immediately following the ceremony.
