Balance It!
This is a 2 or 3 player game
Materials:
- 4 standard dice per team
- game board for each player
Week 3
Grade
2+
Directions:
1) Each player takes turns rolling the 4 dice. Player 1 puts the dice into 2 different
pairs and uses any operation symbols between the numbers and places them on a
balance scale.
For example: If you roll a 2, 3, 4, 5 you could set up your balance like this:
Write the symbols
in on the scale
like shown so you
can see the
equation (or
inequality) that
you make.
Each side does equal 8. So you made it balance (equal). Two of the scales you do not
balance – those will be unbalanced. The first player to get 5 scales correctly filled in
on his/her game board sheet wins the game.
Game Created by: D. Huntress
2) The next player takes a turn, rolls all 4 dice and puts the dice into 2 different pairs
and uses any operation (+, - or x) and fits them on the scales. You may put your
answers in any order. You do not have to fill in the balance scales in order. (Hint:
Since it is harder to make your scales balance (equal), try to do those first.)
3) Players take turns filling in their scales. The first player who finishes 5 scales
correctly is the winner. (Note: Make sure all players have the same number of turns.
Example, if the first player completes five scales then the other player(s) gets a last
turn too.)
4) Make sure that the numbers and symbols are written in on each scale. If it is not
possible, or if the player doesn’t see a way to make it possible, then the player must
pass. Have fun!

2.N.4 Compare whole numbers using terms and symbols, e.g., less than, equal to,
greater than (<, =, >). 3.P.2 Determine which symbol (<, >, or =) is appropriate for a
given number sentence, e.g., 7 x 8 .?. 49 + 6.
