Australian and British flags, and AIF rising sun emblem, sent by the Australian

‘Returned Services League, Service Member’ around the edge, and three
servicemen walking side-by-side in the centre, surmounted by a crown, with

plastic container with price ($10.50) on back. Also comprising seven RSL
service member ties featuring the RSL service member badge embroidered

Girl in a Million Quest crown
1 crown. ca.1959.
Winner’s crown from the ‘Girl in a Million Quest’ pageant run by the RSL
from 1959 until 2009. The crown is 14 cm in diameter and 10.5 cm high,
featuring rhinestones arranged in a pattern of tear-drop like shapes with
flower shapes in the centre, and a white fur band around the base. One of
Australia’s longest-running pageants, the Girl in a Million Quest raised
millions of dollars for veterans over its 50 year history, as contestants
organised charity fundraisers and helped bridge the gap between veterans
and youth. Entrants were judged on their personality, communication skills,
dedication to the quest, charm, and ability to interact with all types of people.
The pageant was last run in 2009.

Items relating to the Cheer-Up Society Adelaide comprising: Banner
presented to the Cheer-Up Society by the Saturday afternoon helpers 1944,
featuring the names of members, volunteers and servicemen; two light blue
triangular veils made of a thin tulle-type material, worn by Cheer-Up Society
volunteers as part of their uniform; two Cheer-Up Society Voluntary Service
badges; one circular medallion ‘Britain Calls Australia 1914’ from WW1;
Cheer-Up Society published documents, including newsletter, information

The Recruiting Train signed letter
1 sheet, mounted. 1916.
Typed letter from The Recruiting Train, dated Thursday 30 March 1916,
addressed to Mr. Victor H. Ryan, thanking him for his organisation of the
recruitment campaign, signed by 12 members of the Recruiting Party. Two
recruiting tours were held in South Australia, in March and April of 1916,
travelling around the state by train, and featured army bands, flags and
speeches by the Premier, attracting large crowds but resulting in few
recruits.

Corporal Erle Cherrington Evans Honourable Discharge King’s Certificate
1 certificate. 1916.
Honourable Discharge certificate (King’s Certificate) awarded to Corporal
Erle Cherrington Evans, 10th Battalion AIF, No. 905, of Hyde Park, SA,
enlisted 31 August 1914, aged 26, embarked from Adelaide on ‘Ascanius’,
20 October 1914, served with the 10 th Battalion, and returned to Australia in
July 1915, medically unfit after being wounded in the Dardanelles. The
illustration in the centre shows Britannia on the left, seated on a throne,
holding a sheathed sword in her left hand and the flag of Great Britain in her
right hand, looking down on two soldiers in uniform standing on the right,
holding their rifles, one wearing a slouch hat. In the background can be seen
a lion statue, and the ocean. The red border consists of the Royal coat of
arms of the United Kingdom and columns decorated with various foliate and
architectural motifs. Text reads: ‘Corpl. Erle Cherrington Evans, 10 th
Battalion A.I.F., Served with honour and was disabled in the Great War.
Honourably discharged on 12 th April 1916. [Signed] George R.J.’. Certificate

Home Appeal collection hat
1 model slouch hat. ca.1963
Model AIF slouch hat used as a collection tin for the RSL Home Appeal. The
hat is khaki coloured, with a yellow painted band and on the right side is a
battalion colour patch, a rectangle halved diagonally, with the left side red
and right side blue. The left side of the hat is turned up with a gold AIF rising
sun badge holding it in place. At the front of the brim is a sticker, almost worn
off, with the words ‘Home Appeal’. On the top of the hat is a coin slot for
donations, and the inside of the hat is fitted with a white plastic tray, which
can be removed, to hold the coins. 33.5 x 20 x 8.5 cm. ca.1963.

Rectangular copper relief plaque of the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps
Badge, featuring a lamp as the central feature of the badge, symbolising
learning, in an oval with ‘Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps’ around the
border, surmounted by a crown, and the motto ‘Pro Humanitate’ (for
humanity) in a scroll at the bottom. Under the scroll is a name, possibly

the cove. Frank Kennedy suffered a head wound at Gallipoli and was taken
to hospital in England for 12 months before being transferred back to
Australia.

Nine postcards sent by Sgt Donald Philip Tullie Wollaston, No. 2143, serving
with the 3rd, 5th and 15th Light Horse Regiment, from Egypt in March to April
1916, to Jean Elise Robertson, whom he married after the War. 107 black
and white photographs (negatives) taken by Sgt Wollaston featuring scenes
of Australian soldiers in Egypt, camels, local people, the pyramids at Giza
and the Sphinx, and cities in Egypt including Cairo and Alexandria. In the
negative case were three slips of paper: Special Duty pass, postage receipt
and an optician test for Sgt Wollaston. Also comprising some personal family
photographs which appear to be WW2 era to the 1950s, in a negative packet
with the name ‘Walloscheck’ on the cover – possibly photographs of Lt/Col.

John Vincent Corigliano war service records

Born in Beachport, SA on 25 February 1880, he served on the ‘HMCS
Protector’ from 1900-1901 during the Boxer Uprising, aboard the HMAS
Australia and HMAS Melbourne during WW1, No. 7424 RAN in charge of the
naval oil depot at Chowder Bay, Sydney during WW2, and attained the rank
of Engineer Lieutenant-Commander, died 1956. Also comprising newspaper
cuttings re the death in 1968 of Charles ‘Charlie’ David Corigliano (b.1891)
No. 1184 RAN, younger brother of J.V. Corigliano, and photocopies of
service records for No. 2011 Private Maurice Corigliano (b.1883), younger
brother of J.V. Corigliano, who served with the 32 nd Battalion and was killed
in action in France, July 1916.

Microfiche copy of the diary kept by No. 11 Corporal Howard Both, from
Caltowie, South Australia, Cable Section of Divisional Signal Company 1,
from the time after his enlistment in the Australian Imperial Expeditionary
Force in August 1914, until December 1914. Howard Both worked as an
electrical engineer before he enlisted on 18 August 1914, aged 20, and
embarked from Melbourne on the HMAT A10 ‘Karroo’ on 20 October 1914.
In 1916 he was promoted to Lieutenant and was recommended for a Military
Cross for his great devotion to duty. He returned to Australia in May 1918

Letter from Syria

Letter written by Jim Harvey on ‘Armistice Day’ to Bryant [surname unknown]
in Adelaide. Private Harvey, SX 1292, was serving with the No.3 Platoon H.Q.
Company, 10th Battalion in Syria at the time. It was written in reply to a letter
sent by Bryant which was salvaged from a ship that had sunk; Harvey sent
part of the envelope in which he had received the salvaged item as proof of
this, together with an explanatory note.
