use only. Written permission to copy, publish or otherwise use these images must be obtained from the

Note on Abstracts:
Many of the articles within the database are heavily biased and/or racist in nature. In writing the
abstracts we have done our best to describe the contents of the article as neutrally as possible and are
leaving it to the readers and researchers to evaluate the contents of the articles for themselves. Please
note that the abstract does not reflect our belief in the veracity of the article.
Note on citations:
A citation has been provided for you in the Notes field with as much information as we have available
and as close to APA styles as could be managed. Please carefully proofread these citations and ensure
that they comply with the style being used for your paper.
The Komagata Maru
This database has a huge number of articles that discuss the events surrounding the Komagata Maru.
The wealth of material provides a valuable chronology as there is at least one article per day for almost
the entire time the Komagata Maru was in the Vancouver port. We are treating it as a sub-collection
within the archive under the Library of Congress Subject Term Komagata Maru Incident, 1914. The
archive includes all articles that reference the Komagata Maru as well as a few articles that have clearly,
due to the timing, been written in response to the incident. It also includes several events that occurred
in the South Asian community after the ship’s departure that were related to the incident. No other
Library of Congress Subject Headings have been applied. Anyone wishing to do research on the social
aspects of South Asian immigration; class actions challenging immigration law; immigration and
emigration law in Canada; and exclusionary practices may wish to include the Komagata Maru Incident.
See thesaurus #3 for the Identifying Phrases used in the Komagata Maru collection, no other identifying
phrases have been used.
We recommend visiting http://komagatamarujourney.ca/ for contextual information and as a starting
point for any further research on this topic.

Thesauri and Glossary:
In order to aid you in searching the database we have created three Thesauri (for Library of Congress
Subject Headings, Key Terms, and the Komagata Maru). These tools detail the controlled vocabulary that
has been used in the databases’ Descriptors and Identifying Phrases. We have also created a Glossary of
Key People (the authority names found in the descriptors) and of Historical Terms (potentially unfamiliar
terms used in the articles themselves).
Thesaurus 1: Descriptors (Library of Congress Subject Headings)
This glossary contains a complete listing of all the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) used in
the Descriptor field of the database. Please see the Scope Notes for an explanation of how the terms are
applied and Related Terms for suggestions for related topics.
Thesaurus 2: Identifying Phrase (Key Terms)
This glossary contains a list of key terms that have been entered under the “identifying phrase” field.
These are primarily used to bring out specificities such as a particular event, law, or practice that does
not have its own Library of Congress Subject Heading.
Thesaurus 3: Identifying Phrase (Komagata Maru)
This thesaurus contains a list of identifying phrases that have been exclusively applied under the LCSH
Descriptor Komagata Maru Incident (1914). No other identifying phrases have been applied.
Thesaurus 4: Descriptors (Key People)
This thesaurus contains a list of the authority names used as Descriptors for key people mentioned
within the articles. Scope notes give a briefly describe the person and their significance.
Glossary: Historical Terms
The glossary contains a list of the common historical terms used in the articles, a brief scope note of
their significance and the modern terms they are generally replaced with.
