FUN FACTS
The summer solstice occurs exactly when the Earth’s axis is most inclined towards the sun at its maximum of
23° 26'. Though the summer solstice is an instant in time, terms
like Midsummer are used to refer to the day it occurs. Except in the polar regions
(where daylight is continuous for many months during the spring and summer),
the day on which the summer solstice occurs is the day of the year with the
longest period of daylight. Thus the significance of the Summer solstice is the
reversal of the gradual shortening of nights and lengthening of days. The summer
solstice occurs between June 20 and June 22 in the Northern Hemisphere and
December 21 and December 23 in the Southern Hemisphere. This year, the

summer solstice occurs on June 20 . The word solstice derives from Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still).

Bjorgvin Marknad is a festival where we will take you back to the Viking and Medieval ages. You can witness
fighting scenes with re-enactment groups, practice your skills at the archery range, and look at the
merchandise for sale at the market. We will also have historic exhibitions of daily life in Bergen (Viking name

Sunday, June 3 , 7 & 4 Fjellsturen\7 & 4 Mountain Hike, Bergen
The 7-mountain hike starts at Gravdal and covers Lyderhorn, Damsgårdsfjellet, Lovstakken, Ulriken, Fløyen,
Rundemanen, Sandviksfjellet. The 4-mountain hike starts at Bergen Yrkeskole and covers Ulriken, Fløyen,

Rundemanen, Sandviksfjellet, The walk was first held in 1948, and will be held for the 58 time in 2012!
Registration for both events is at the Bergen Turlag Information office, Tverrgaten 4-6. The
maximum number of participants this year is 5000 for the 7-mountain hike and 3000 for the 4-mountain hike.

Eggstock Festival is a rock festival for talented bands in Hordaland. The festival is held as a competition
with two initial days, and a finale, where ten of the participating bands play. Artists such as SondreLerche,
Ephemera, Poor Rich Ones, Baba Nation, Rocktansky and Matiaz Tellez had their first appearances with us.

Wednesday, June 13 , Slayer, Mastodon and Gojira, Bergenhus Festning – Plenen, Bergen
Slayer, Mastodon and Gojira sharing one stage in Bergen! Slayer can be given much of the credit for today’s
thrash-metal. With its dissonant riffs, high tempo and frenzied energy, they were immediate pioneers. With
Mastodon and Gojira you now have three of hard-metal's greatest innovators. This is Slayer’s only concert
appearance in Norway, while Mastodon and Gojira will be coming from a performance at Valle Hovin in Oslo at

Organized for the first time in 1992, Bergen Fest is a four-day open air and club festival in the city centre of
Bergen. The festival started as a pure blues festival, but since 2000, Bergen Fest has emerged as a festival
with a music profile that spans over many genres and artistic expression. With over 40 concerts, the open air
shows take place in Bergenhus Festning and indoor shows take place at clubs and theaters across Bergen.
