Peruggi Kingsborough Community College, offering both liberal arts and career education, is Brooklyn's comprehensive community college. It has earned national recognition for the large number of degrees it confers, the high percentage of graduates who continue their studies, and the innovative programs that draw thousands of non-traditional students to its campus. Kingsborough is also a pioneer in collaborative programs. The College has partnered with dozens of schools city-wide to create a seamless transition into college. Founded in 1963, Kingsborough is located on a modern, 70-acre campus with a spectacular waterfront setting in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn. As the leading point of entry to higher education for the residents of Brooklyn, Kingsborough currently serves nearly 40,000 credit and non-credit students each year. The undergraduate, credited student body totals approximately 15,000 (headcount). Kingsborough offers programs in the liberal arts and sciences, business, human services, health-related careers, information technologies, tourism and hospitality, communications, and the arts. It also maintains one of the most extensive adult and continuing education programs in New York City. The College is a student-centered campus and takes pride in the many support programs it offers that enhance student success. All students receive individual, personal and academic counseling; workshops to improve basic skills; and career planning and placement. However, because each appropriates funds independently of the other, a project's current funding received may not be matched equally 50-50. The following projects currently have appropriations in unequal amounts from the City and State: Mechanical & Infrastruct. Upgrades Ph. I Total project cost: $13.5M. Funding received: $5.5M State + $3.0M City. Funding requested: $1.25M State + $3.75M City. Health Technologies Education Center Total project cost: $20.57M. Funding received: $1.5M City. Five Year Capital Request Project Descriptions (B) Mechanical & Infrastruct. Upgrades Ph. I This project will replace the existing campus high-pressure steam boiler plant, which has reached the end of its useful life, with a medium temperature hot water (MTHW) plant in order to ensure adequate and uniform heating across the campus. These upgrades will provide a campus-wide heating system with greater capacity, increased redundancy, and greater energy-efficiency and prevent any possible failure. Total Project Cost $13,431 Prior Funding Received $9,000 Five Year Request $4,431 Funds to complete Anticipated Completion: $0 January 2013 (B) Health Technologies Education Center This project will create a new 22,500 GSF modular building which will house state-of-the-art academic space for new curricula currently under development. The new, two-story Health Technologies Education Center will provide the following programs with specialized classrooms, labs and research spaces: Bio-Technology Lab, Respiratory Therapy, Radiation Technology, and Veterinary Technician programs. Total Project Cost $20,578 Prior Funding Received $1,500 Five Year Request $19,078 Funds to complete Anticipated Completion: $0 September 2013 (B) T1 & T2 Buildings Upgrades This project will renovate and reconfigure interiors of the 40-year old Temporary 1 and Temporary 2 buildings to house new classrooms and laboratory spaces. The upgrades include the replacement of ceilings, wall partitions, flooring, upgrades to the HVAC systems, and bringing ADA compliance to all bathroom facilities. Total Project Cost $23,192 Prior Funding Received $1,000 Five Year Request $22,192 Funds to complete Anticipated Completion: $0 August 2013 (B) Mechanical Infrastructure Upgrade, Ph. 2 Frequent breakdowns of the air-handling units on the roof of the Arts & Science Building have forced specialized labs and equipment in the building to be shut down. In order to avoid future disruption of classes or taking the spaces entirely off-line, the air handlers need to be replaced with new ones. The new system will create a new lightweight enclosure that will protect the air-handlers and equipment from the elements and keep them securely in place. The buildings have exceeded their life expectancy and are in dire need of extensive renovations. All of these buildings must continue to be used as general classroom buildings until they are replaced with a new academic building. This will provide a campus-wide heating system with increased redundancy and greater energy-efficiency. In addition, some steam cooking equipment in the U-Building cafeteria will be replaced. This project received $3 million total from the City Council in FY 2008 and 2009. Additional City funding is needed to match existing state appropriations in order to implement this project. Anticipated Completion: $3,000 Prior Funding Received $3,000 April 2010 Health Technologies Labs Phase: DCE This project will convert 3,000 GSF of existing classroom space in the T7 Building into state-of-the-art technology labs for programs in Respiratory Therapy and Radiation Technology. This project received $1.5 million in funding from the Borough President in FY 2009. Additional City funding is needed to complete the project. Anticipated Completion: FY 2010 Request FY 2010 Request $954 Prior Funding Received $1,500 November 2012 Replace T5 Building Roof Phase: DC This project will continue the roof replacement and building envelope repair program by addressing building T5. FY 2010 Request $589 Prior Funding Received $0 Anticipated Completion: July 2011 Replace A/C Units in T4 & T5 Buildings Phase: DC This project will replace 65 tons of decentralized air conditioning, consisting of two units in the T5 Building as well as the T4 Building. These units will be replaced with new centralized, energy efficient A/C systems. This project received State appropriations totaling $580,000 in FY 2007; this request is for the City's match to these funds in order to complete the project. The new console and monitors will extend the coverage of the security system by allowing all security monitoring to be consolidated in a single location. FY 2010 Request $223 Prior Funding Received $0 Anticipated Completion: May 2012 Phase: Bio-Tech Lab S Building DCE This project will convert three existing labs in the College's "S" Building into state-of-the-art, interconnected laboratories totaling 3,900 GSF. Lab 1 will be a DNA Technology laboratory; Lab 2 will be for tissue culture and cell cloning; and Lab 3 will be a student and faculty biotechnology research lab. The labs' interconnected layout will enable a wide range of users, from small-sized research projects to large lab classes and experiments. Anticipated Completion: $2,832 Prior Funding Received $0 June 2011 Replace Underwater Windows/Lights at Pool Phase: DC This project will address structural deficiencies in the pool's walls, floor and gutters. These deficiencies have also caused damage to the ceilings, walls and floor of the room below, which will also be rehabilitated as part of the project. Damaged light fixtures and leaking underwater windows (used to assess the swimming technique of students) will also be replaced.
