Young people (till 26) from all Europe can be volunteers and can help people, animals, nature… If you are interested in being volunteer, if you think – it is something for me – you can visit website: www.europa.eu.int/comm/youth/ You can find there a lot of projects, choose one (or several if you like more) and find a sending organization. During this time we will work in cybercafé and take care of bre@king the isolation project… Back to summary… Dr Ketelaer is our boss and mentor ☺ He supports and encourages us to create new ideas, with the assistance of IMSO (International Multiple Sclerosis Organisation), he also helps to arrange new comfortable equipment for patients. (big screens, optical mouse etc…) Together we are a new cybercafé team. Back to summary… Cybercafé received from Hewlett – Packard 7 computers. - In Cybercafe there are 7 PC computers by Hewlett – Packard. HP - D230, Intel Celeron 2GHz, 256 MB with Microsoft Windows XP Profesional system and 7 HP monitors 17” - One main server computer is for staff. Six computers are for patients The cybercafe has also two new flat Philips monitors. (19”) They are very comfortable for people who have problems with their eyes. Click “Escape” if you want to finish this presentation… For Persons with MS cybercafe is very important because: They can communicate with others : patients, family, friends and meet people from all over the world. They can read a lot of information about Multiple Sclerosis. On the internet they have a lot of hot news… They can practice minds, hands, fingers… They can shopping, make payments, find sponsors… They can play games and be happy!!! For people on wheelchair life with cybercafé is simply easier! They can create their own I.M.S.O. magazine and write articles. Patients and hospital staff write articles and we help them to make the layout. Sometimes we contribute also by writing articles. Back to summary… Click “Escape” if you want to finish this presentation… In cybercafe we have patients who are very familiar with the use of the internet. Others are beginners so the level of computer knowledge is very different. As volunteers we try to give helpful assistance for everybody – What does it mean? If somebody know what to do, we switch on computer and don’t disturb… we wait for questions… If somebody is a beginner – step by step we try to teach him about computer, internet, software We try to open more services for patients so every month there is a special topic – like newspapers on-line, shopping, pen pals, chatting etc… and we try to show patients how it works… Why? – sometimes, some patients like games too much ;) Back to summary… How many patients use computers? Is the cybercafe popular in Centre? Click “Escape” if you want to finish this presentation… The cybercafe is extremely well visited and has up to 260 visitors a month. During 35 weeks there were 132 different patients in the cybercafe and they visit us 2212 times. 17 is the average number of visits for one patient Usually patients visit cybercafé a few times per day – they need break for therapy, meals etc… ☺ About 75% patients are regular users and the others come to cybercafé only from time to time. ‘The record-holder’ visited cybercafé 100 times (almost every working day – over 500 hours ☺ ) Back to summary… Our small statistical record… Back to summary… Our statistics prove the increase of internet interests among persons with MS! Click “Escape” if you want to finish this presentation… The most popular in Cybercafe are… Games, of course ☺ - patience, backgammon, tetris… For some persons we try to diversify and introduce them to new games – e.g. puzzle and chess (good exercises for memory). Sending e-mails and creating new accounts ☺. Chatting and communicating with another : patients, family, friends… (different messengers). Google – searching information. E-banking – making payments via internet. Microsoft Office – Word and Excel. Back to summary… The cybercafé final aim is to help patients to become more independent through Internet Medium We try to introduce the patients to the world of IT. We explain in a simple way the basics of the use of the internet, e-mail and Microsoft software so they can make more things by their own at homes.
