SOLEMNITY OF MARY January 1, 2017 The Blessed Virgin Mary is the holy Mother of God, and our spiritual mother. In the reading from Numbers, God gives Moses the blessing that Aaron and his sons are to use in blessing the Israelites. The reading from Galatians reveals how God sent his Son to be born of a woman so that we might all be children of God. In the Gospel, shepherds arrive in Bethlehem after being told by an angel that a Savior has been born. Today, the Church honors the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was chosen by God the Father to be the mother of his Son. As Jesus was both fully human and divine, the Church confesses that Mary is truly “Mother of God” (ccc 495). So may we join together this day in adoring Mary, who is the Mother of God and our spiritual mother. ST. FAITH FORMATION The Faith Formation Staff of St. Madeleine Sophie and St. Gabriel’s Churches wishes you a joyous Christmas season and peace in this New year! Thank you for your continued support of our parish programs and may God bless you always. The True Meaning of Christmas: When Charlie Brown asked: “Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?” Linus responded, “Sure Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about. Lights please? And there were in the same country shepherds, abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them and said unto them, “Fear not! For, behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all my people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ, the Lord…”and suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the Heavenly Host praising God, and saying, “Glory to God in the Highest, and on Earth peace, and good will toward men.” Thank you to the many SMS Faith Formation families who shared the true meaning of Christmas with more than 100 families in our community by donating to the 2016 SMS Christmas Food Pantry and Giving Tree Program. Your generous donations of food, toys and gifts helped meet the needs of many who are struggling during the holidays and throughout the year. We’re grateful too for the Faith Formation students, parents and catechists who volunteered their time and effort to empty the food pantry closets, and who carried food and gifts for the program recipients at the distribution.
