Dear Friends,
I am delighted that you are part of De Marillac Academy’s mission in the Tenderloin, and I am proud to
share our 2012-2013 Annual Report with you. These pages highlight the impact that you, our community
of benefactors and volunteers, are making upon our students, graduates, and families. I remain inspired
by your demonstrated commitment to our important work, and also acknowledge the tremendous
leadership and support of the De La Salle Christian Brothers, the Daughters of Charity, our Board of
Trustees, and our dedicated faculty and staff.
At De Marillac Academy, we believe that neighborhood of residence and socio-economic status should
not determine a child’s access to quality education or ultimate success in life. Every day, De Marillac
partners with low-income families to break the cycle of poverty through education. This gift of ministering
to the young entrusted to our care is made all the more special thanks to your partnership.
Throughout this year our faculty and staff are engaged in strategic dialogue related to De Marillac’s Vision
for LIFE: Lifelong Impact for Excellence. Our service to our students and graduates is grounded in this
Vision’s core tenets of Strengthening our Mission, Enhancing our Impact, and Ensuring our Sustainability.
De Marillac’s goal that students reach their full human potential now challenges us, in year thirteen of
our dynamic history, to determine what matters most for the long-term vitality of our sacred mission.
Ultimately, the question we strive to answer is, “how can we best make a difference in the lives of our
students, graduates, and families?”
The namesake of our school, St. Louise de Marillac, instructed the early Daughters of Charity “above
all” to “be very gentle and courteous toward the people you serve; love them tenderly and respect them
deeply.” It is in the spirit of deep respect for the students, graduates, and families of De Marillac Academy,
that I express our sincere gratitude for your dedication to our mission. Thank you for inspiring us to
transform the Tenderloin and the world beyond…together.
In Hope,
De Marillac’s holistic
educational experience
liberates students to lead
lives of choice, meaning,
and purpose, and therefore
transforms the Tenderloin
and the world beyond.

President

About De Marillac Academy
Established in 2001, De Marillac Academy provides a tuition-free, private school education that focuses
on academic excellence in a values-based environment. Co-sponsored by the Daughters of Charity and
De La Salle Christian Brothers, De Marillac’s educational model is rooted in the Nativity Miguel school
movement, which began in New York City over 40 years ago in response to the poor state of urban public
schools, the high cost of private education, and the lack of local schools in many inner-city neighborhoods.
Hallmarks of the Nativity Miguel model include an extended school day (almost double the length of
public school days), a low student-to-teacher ratio, a summer academic program, and a commitment to
support graduates through high school and prepare them for college.
Following this model, De Marillac opened with a class of nineteen sixth graders in 2001, and has expanded
its academic program over the past decade to serve boys and girls in grades fourth through eighth. The
2013-2014 school community includes 120 fourth through eighth grade students, 183 alumni, and 200
families in our school and our unique wrap-around clinical and family support program.
De Marillac’s desired impact is that our students successfully complete high school with the skills,
supports, and self-awareness to pursue the next productive life choice. Through a comprehensive fourth
through eighth grade academic program, a supportive counseling program, and a dynamic graduate
youth and development program that continues through high school and beyond, the school utilizes
many innovative strategies for the educational and social benefit of our students. These strategies, along
with the leadership of committed educators, the school’s religious co-sponsors, partner foundations,
corporations, and generous benefactors, empower students, alumni and families to achieve this shared
goal of transforming lives through education.

Highlighting De Marillac Academy’s Impact
Graduate Support Program
De Marillac Academy’s Graduate Support Program (GSP) assures the educational and life success
of our graduates after they leave De Marillac Academy’s elementary school program. As our
graduates advance through high school and beyond, the GSP provides extensive, wrap-around
support to graduates and their families. Program support includes academic and financial assistance,
personal and family counselling, college preparation and career counselling, volunteer and service
opportunities, social service referrals, monthly programming events, and mentoring.
In combination with our intensive school program, the Graduate Support Program achieves
the desired outcomes of De Marillac Academy: an educationally successful young adult with a
strong sense of self and self-worth, a feeling of agency and ownership of their future, and a love
of learning and personal growth while being ever-mindful of ways to serve and support others.

Alejandra, De Marillac class of 2005
The De Marillac Academy Opportunity
Coming from a low-income family who was
unable to pay the expenses of a private catholic
school, I was fortunate enough to attend De
Marillac Academy and Sacred Heart Cathedral
Preparatory. De Marillac and Sacred Heart Cathedral
gave me the space to develop spiritually through
daily prayer, mass, community service and retreats.
Apart from that, the teachers at both Lasallian
Vincentian institutions were heavily invested in
their relationship with their faith. Through them, I
began to see what “enter to learn and leave to serve”
really embodied. Through my faith I became aware
of my responsibility to give back to my community
and to transfer those values to the generations that
will come after me.
A Dedicated Family
I immigrated to the United States when I was
five with my parents and my younger brother,
because my parents wanted to provide a better life
for my siblings and me. My parents endured many
hardships and have worked hard to teach me to
value the importance of obtaining an education.
They wanted more for me, and they did not want me
to struggle working in low-paying, backbreaking
jobs to earn barely enough to make a living. Both of
my parents were unable to finish elementary school
because they lacked the financial resources. They
sacrificed their time at a very young age to help
take care of their siblings and find ways to make
a living. Once in the United States, because they
did not speak English, they had limited options
and worked in the fields, in factories, and cleaning
rooms, often making less than minimum wage.
When my father injured his back, my mother had
to enter the workforce in order to help our family
get by in life. I knew then that education was key
in order for me to succeed as an individual, to help
my family economically, and to grow as a person of
faith.
A Commitment to Service
I have had several jobs since I turned fifteen years
old and I have worked ever since that point. As a
low-income student, my family was not able to pay
for many of my school expenses. I had to work in
order to pay for my books, public transportation
and other living expenses. Sometimes I found
myself working up to three jobs at the same time.
I have been an active member of La Hermandad,
a Latino organization at Saint Mary’s College of
California, for the past two years, through which
I have developed various leadership skills. I have
also grown in my confidence and drive to continue
helping others. Our club organization’s mission is to
bring education to Latino members on campus.
Through education, I firmly believe
that we can change the way people
view the world for the better.
By sponsoring cultural excursions, providing
opportunities for students to get involved in
community service, and by encouraging students
to engage in debates around issues that affect our
TRANSFORMING LIVES | 9
Dreams and Aspirations
My ultimate goal is to obtain my masters in
school counseling. I hope to be able to guide
and counsel kids in the Tenderloin community in
San Francisco and in other similar communities
to pursue higher education. I hope to motivate
them to attend college so that they can return to
their own communities and fulfill the mission to
“enter to learn and leave to serve.” Through this
return, I believe they can create a ripple effect.
With my assistance, I hope that more students
will be able to attend college and as a result
they will encourage their younger brothers and
sisters to follow in their footsteps. My goal as a
first generation college student is to give back
the education I have received. It is important and
crucial for me to have these same opportunities
shared with others, especially Latino students on
college campuses nationwide.
Alejandra graduated from St. Mary’s
College in 2013 with a degree in
Women’s and Gender Studies. She
is currently pursuing her Masters
in School Counselling.
community, I have been able to develop a strong
passion for social justice. I hope to apply these skills
and tools to empower young Latino students to
pursue a higher education, to actualize more than
what they have been told they could do, and to
exercise their choice to reach those goals.
As a future counselor I will be able to share those
values with students whom have encountered the
same struggles that I have. I will be able to help students
who experience poverty, discrimination, gender bias,
and the struggles that come with being part of the first
generation to finish high school and attend college.
Through my experiences, faith has
allowed me to reflect on why and how I
embody the Lasallian Vincentian mission
to “enter to learn and leave to serve.”
Thank you De Marillac Academy!
Perseverance
Growing up I never saw my self-attending college. I
was told by family members, friends and others that
I was never going to make it, not only because of my
gender but as a result of the cultural assumptions
behind my ethnicity. I was either expected to drop
out of high school or start a family at a young age. It
was during my senior year of high school, when I met
a counselor at Sacred Heart Cathedral, that I began
to visualize the possibility of attending college. With
his guidance I applied to ten different colleges and
soon realized that I had the potential to accomplish
anything I pursued. By completing my masters degree,
not only will I serve as a role model for my brothers
and sister, but I hope to also encourage Latinos to
pursue an education beyond a bachelor’s degree.
Alejandra’s cousin, Angely, works on a writing assignment in De Marillac’s fourth grade.
