Spanish For Elementary School Course Description and Philosophy The study of Spanish in the Mountain Lakes public school system begins in the first grade. The following document covers the learnerʼs goal statements for each skill level of a foreign language listening, speaking, reading, writing, along with the topics, functions, and structures covered at each grade level. The functions and structures reflect what will be accomplished by the end of each grade level. It may become apparent that topics and functions, along with structures will reappear at different levels, as the study of foreign language requires constant reinforcement of previously studied material. Also in the narrative are songs, activities, and projects, including some, which are interdisciplinary. Cultural capsules and units are introduced at each grade level in order to develop awareness in the children of differences and similarities in cultures other than their own. Due to the level of language required, not all cultural units will be done in the target language. No curriculum is static, and the teacher is constantly reviewing and revising the methods and materials used and seeking new sources to develop a program, which will stimulate our students and will develop their abilities to the maximum in acquiring a beginning level of proficiency in a second language. The order of the topics presented is not necessarily taught in the order listed in the curriculum guide. This allows for flexibility and creativity of the teacher in responding to studentʼs needs.
