“There’s nothing finer than a Worcester Diner” was the slogan of the Worcester Lunch Car Company (WLCC).
There are very few diner cars still in use and you would be hard pressed to find a finer example than the 1949
Miss Portland Diner – WLCC car number 818.
Miss Portland was originally located on Forest Avenue and was moved in 1964 to make room for the then new
Federal Post Office building. She was in operation for nearly 40 years right down the street at 49 Marginal Way
and was known as a greasy spoon among her mostly local crowd. Also known for her special ambiance, Miss
Portland made a cameo appearance in Mel Gibson’s movie Man Without a Face in August 1993. In 2004 the
City of Portland accepted the diner car as a donation to ensure her proper restoration.
In 2007, the Miss Portland Diner was purchased by Tom and Stefanie Manning. Prior to the purchase, Tom was
an executive at Newsweek magazine and Stefanie an executive at O, The Oprah Magazine, both working in New
York City. Tom, a Portland native, wanted to return to his hometown and preserve this piece of local history.
Tom worked closely with the City and it’s historic preservation department to ensure that the revised Miss
Portland met with their approval. The diner opened at its current location in Bayside on October 31, 2008.
The motto we like to use is “what is old can be new again.” We pride ourselves on top quality food at reasonable
prices with excellent customer service. Mostly everything is made from scratch in our kitchen and is sourced
locally when feasible. We welcome your feedback anytime.
