There is a growing culture of bullying, intimidation and violence in Sydney’s schools. But it is not the students who are behaving badly - it’s the parents. Principals say conflict and nastiness at the school gate is on the rise, as parents become more involved in activities and connect on social media. In the most serious cases, parents have ended up in car-park brawls and dozens of incidents were referred to police last year, an education department report shows. Parents take schoolground bullying to the car park. Sydney Morning Herald - January 24, 2015 Parent-Teacher Evenings, Information Evenings, meetings with teachers to discuss progress and air concerns are all part of a professional educator’s life. Thankfully, at SCAS these are informative and collaborative sessions with the good of the child at the centre of what is said, planned and reviewed. Unfortunately, in many other schools this is not the norm. “Teachers are increasingly being bullied, yelled at, and in rarer cases, physically assaulted by some assertive parents who believe they have an ‘inalienable right to scream and demand things for their children,’’ the NSW Teachers Federation says. More than 80 per cent of 2500 teachers and school staff say they have been bullied by parents, according to research in a new book by three academics, Deirdre Duncan, Dan Riley and John Edwards. They say the bullying of school staff by parents is a ‘’dark side’’ of schools, ignored because schoolyard bullies attract the most publicity.” Sydney Morning Herald, May 17, 2012 The media has written much about the impact of “helicopter parents” on today’s schools. In fact. the media has gone so far as to identify the more extreme parent “advocates” as “Blackhawk (helicopter gunships) parents”. “Rather than supporting teachers like in the past, some parents now question their authority, and believe they have an ‘’inalienable right to scream at teachers and demand things’’ for their children.” Fionie Stavert, NSW Teachers Federation Parents in some schools see themselves as advocates, champions, BFF’s for their children rather than parents and project their egos into their “conversations” with teachers.. “Parents are invading the sanctity of the classroom to intimidate teachers into making special accommodations for their child. They are aggressively bulldozing right over their child’s teachers….When these children enter school their mothers attempt to micromanage the child’s classroom. ‘My child told me her hand was raised and you picked another child.’ The not so hidden message is “my child from now on must be chosen first.” All proceeding communication with the teacher starts out, “today this or that happened in school” as if the mother was sitting in the classroom. Upon questioning by the teacher it becomes clear her only source of information necessary is her own child’s supposedly accurate perceptions...The teacher gets the message that this child will be treated as special or the teacher will pay a heavy price. The teacher’s reputation will be mangled through the whisper campaign with other parents in the parking lot and by disparaging remarks to other teachers about this less than accommodating teacher.” Sweet but Overbearing Mothers Bully Teachers, Domenick J. Maglio, Ph.D. Mr Terry Muldoon Principal [email protected] Now, I know that teachers in schools where this kind of behaviour is common (there have been recent examples in Australia where the relationship between teachers and parents has degenerated to a point where Apprehended Violence Orders have been sought and granted) can have a terrible impact on school staff. What these parents often do not realise is that this behaviour is also “crippling” their children educationally and emotionally. “The negative impact on the child can be just as debilitating. The offending parent, often the mother, sends the pathetic message to the child that the child can never show she is less than perfect... The parent rushes in to maintain the illusion there is no need for improvement. The mother believes she needs to bail the child out of any of the child’s mistakes in the attempt to maintain the myth that the child is as infallible as the mother. The mission of these bullying parents is to create in the minds of others an image of a superior child to confirm she is a superior parent.” As I have said, we see very little of this behaviour at SCAS and are determined to keep it that way. Our teachers deserve respect for the great job they do. If they ever “get it wrong” they deserve to be spoken to with respect and an acceptable outcome achieved without bullying. Our students deserve the right to grow and mature. Sometimes that means they make mistakes, get it wrong and learn to accept the consequences for their actions. Our parents have the right to be partners in their child’s education. They do not have the right to bully teachers, demean their own or other children or act as negative role models for their children. “For education to be effective all forms of bullying need to be eliminated. Bullying parents have to be exposed like any other bully or they will become a cancer to the entire school community.” In case parents feel the “high and mighty principal” is picking on them, please be aware that in a number of studies investigating teachers being bullied, it is the principal who is often the perpetrator and the one who sets a toxic example to students, staff and families. Over the years I have also seen teachers who are bullies - to students, their colleagues and parents. Their legacy has been to alienate students from education. They create an atmosphere of discomfort and fear as they yell, standover, backstab and ridicule those they are supposed to be teaching and with whom they are supposed to be working in a shared mission. That behaviour needs to be corrected, rebuked and seen as antipathetic to education in general, and a SCAS education in particular. Simple. St Columba Anglican School - SCAS Connections Page 2 Whole School McCabe House Fundraiser Mr Andrew Harrison (Sec) Mrs Jaana Gray (Primary) Heads of McCabe House McCabe House held their annual fundriaser today, with proceeds from the day going to two worthy causes - Surf Aid, an organisation that is working to reduce the incidence of malaria and other health problems in the small islands of Indonesia, and Muscular Dystrophy NSW. Students enjoyed a barbeque, spiders and ice creams, and were able to wear mufti and make a gold coin donation to go to the chosen charities. Many of our secondary students wore surf themed outfits in support of Surf Aid. Thank you to Ball’s Butchery South West Rocks for their assistance with the donation of sausages for the BBQ. St Columba Anglican School - SCAS Connections Page 3 Whole School Changes to Traffic Management on Campus From Monday, 7th September 2015, St Columba Anglican School will implement new traffic patterns throughout our campus. These changes are being made to ease traffic problems that currently exist, and to improve safety for our students during peak periods. The following are the immediate changes being made to traffic flow at SCAS: 1. All vehicles entering the school campus will use the entry road on the north-western boundary of the site off Major Innes Drive (the old bus road). This will be a dual (one-way) carriageway, with one lane for buses only, and one lane for all other vehicles entering the school campus. 2. The former vehicle entry further along Major Innes Drive will now be for vehicles accessing Columba Cottage Early Learning Centre (CCELC) and to access parking spaces on the southern side of the CCELC. 3. Please note that parents parking in the car parking spaces in Iona Avenue must walk up to the Kiss and Drop area to pick up their student(s) and walk them back to their car. Students are not permitted to walk across to the Iona Avenue parking area and must remain at the Kiss and Drop until collected. Vehicles parking in Iona Avenue should expect delays when re-entering the traffic flow at peak times. 4. What was the former bus pick up and drop off zone (the undercover area) will now become the Kiss and Drop area, and the current Kiss and Drop zone will become the bus zone for buses to drop off and pick up. For parents needing to park on campus, there will be three distinct carparking areas: • The gravel area along the access road on the School’s southern boundary, accessible via Kyla Crescent. This area will be asphalted and line-marked during Term 4. • The car parking spaces on the southern side of the Early Learning Centre. • The CCELC carpark (accessible through the CCELC boom gate) and available for CCELC families only. Parking is also available in Kyla Cresce nt, but we ask that you be mindful of our neighbours when parking in this area. A few things to remember when driving on the school campus: • The speed limit within the school grounds is 5 km/h. Expect children to be around, and drive with caution at all times. • Buses have priority at all times. Please give way to any buses leaving or joining the flow of traffic where possible. • The area through the SCAS boom gate to the rear of the campus is for staff and senior student parking only. Parents are not to access this area of the school. During the initial implementation period, senior staff members will be present during peak morning and afternoon times to ensure a smooth transition to the new traffic system. Please follow all instructions given by staff. The School will be monitoring the effectiveness of these changes, and your feedback is most welcome. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this new traffic management system, please contact our Business Manager, Mr Garry Clifton, either by phone, or via email to [email protected]. St Columba Anglican School - SCAS Connections Page 4 Whole School First Aid at School All teaching and support staff at St Columba Anglican School have a current first aid certificate, and observe their duty of care to students by providing first aid treatment within the limits of their skill, expertise, training and responsibilities. Minor injuries such as bumps, bruises and cuts are treated in the first aid room, and students are returned to class. When a student is feeling unwell, our first aid officers will assess the student, and if the student is not well enough to return to class after 10 or 15 minutes of rest, the student’s parent/caregiver will be contacted to collect the student. If the parent/caregiver is unable to collect the student, they should make arrangements with a family member or friend to do so. Unfortunately the school does not have the facilities to keep students in the first aid room indefinitely, and if collection cannot be arranged, the student will be returned to class. In the case of a medical emergency or if the first aid officer is in any doubt regarding the student’s condition, or feels that the student’s condition is deteriorating, an ambulance will be called and the parent/caregiver contacted and informed. Operation Christmas Child Please continue to bring in your filled Christmas Child Boxes and leave at the School Office. Woolworths Earn and Learn The Woolworth Earn and Learn program finishes on 8th September 2015. When you shop at Woolworths you can collect Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers from the checkout operator and place them on a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet. There’ll be one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco, and gift cards). Once completed, simply place the Sticker Sheet in the Collection Box at school, which are located in the Front Office and in the Primary Office foyer. Points earned are able to be used to choose resources from Modern Teaching Aids, Australia’s biggest supplier of resources for schools. Flexischools We have now successfully introduced our new online ordering system in the School Canteen, “FlexiSchools”. FlexiSchools is well established and tested, and operates in hundreds of schools across Australia. The FlexiSchools system allows parents, students and staff to place food orders from home or work at any time. Payment is also completed online, so there is no need for a paper bag and cash to be sent via your student to school. As well as being convenient for parents, the online orders are much faster and easier for the Canteen co-ordinator to process - so it makes everyone’s life a little easier. The online menu is the same price as the normal Canteen menu, however there is a small fee of 25 cents per online order to help pay for the labels and the website system. Parents and students can, of course, continue to order and pay cash for their canteen orders as they do now, and can continue to purchase over the counter at break times. Getting online is easy and it only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to www.flexischools.com.au and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start ordering immediately. If you have any questions, FlexiSchools have a great help desk on 1300 361 769. For more information go to the FlexiSchools website, where there is a very good Question and Answer section. P&F News The P&F executive team had the opportunity to have a positive and informative discussion with the Chair of School Council, Rev. Canon Dr John Barrett, at their meeting this week. Discussions centred around the Council’s expectations of the P&F, and how the P&F might contribute to the Council’s objectives for the school. St Columba Anglican School - SCAS Connections Page 5 Primary School Book Week 2015 Mrs Julia Jenkins Book Week Co-ordinator [email protected] On Wednesday 26th August over 500 Primary School students and staff had fun dressing up as their favourite book character or author. This year we embraced the theme “Books light up our world” and each child was introduced in the spotlight before strutting their character down the twinkling catwalk. Some of our littlest friends from the CCLEC dressed up and joined us and many parents, grandparents and friends once again supported us and watched. Thank you to the wonderful parents who helped create some great dress-ups for our students to wear. Book Fair After this year’s Book Parade, many parents and students took the opportunity to purchase books at the Library Book Fair. Many generously donated a book or two for our Library shelves. Students’ names will be placed on a plaque on the inside cover of these books, and they will be the first to be able to borrow the books they have donated. Many thanks to our school community for their generosity in supporting this fundraiser. Excited “shoppers” had fun looking through all the beautiful gifts on display and choosing something for their dads for Fathers’ Day this Sunday. A big thank you to our lovely P&F parent volunteers who looked after our happy shoppers today. Enrichment Camp Mr Bruce Little Head of Primary [email protected] Last week, ten Year 6 students attended the HICES Enrichment Camp in Sydney. The students enjoyed a range of stimulating activities in areas such as cryptology, sport science, unusual traditions, drama and aviation. There were also plenty of outdoor activities. The students thoroughly enjoyed the challenging and exciting topics and had a great time connecting with other students from schools around the state. Year 5 Desert Survivors Year 5 have been studying how animals and plants survive in the desert as a part of their Desert Survivors Science unit. Each student was given a desert plant or animal to investigate. The students researched the animal’s features, habitat and adaptations that they use to allow them to survive in a desert environment. After this research the students selected an adaptation and designed an experiment to display how this allowed the species to survive in a desert. The creativity of the students was impressive as even if students selected the same adaptation, the experiments that they designed were significantly different. Well done to all of the Year 5 students and teachers in completing a fantastic investigative unit with excellence. Stage 1 Enviro Week Ms Ann-Kathrin Kiehn Enviro Co-ordinator [email protected] This week Stage 1 have been looking at ways at how they can make a difference in looking after their environment. Year 2J created some stunning posters to encourage thinking in the areas of being a ‘Waste Warrior’, a ‘Trader, a ‘Foodie’, a ‘Green Thumb’, a ‘Sparky’, and a ‘Wild Child.’ Stage 1 children continue to compost their fruit scraps, actively work in the Vegie Patch and are great at being wild children outdoors. Year 2 and 6 Father’s Day Breakfast Mr Marten Hilberts Director of Primary Pastoral Care [email protected] Students and dads from Years 2 and 6 enjoyed a father’s day barbeque breakfast this week on the lawns at the front of the school. The Primary School Band played some great music while dads and students enjoyed each other’s company. Australian Business Week “In Pursuit of Excellence” Founder, CEO and Principal of Passmore’s Business College in Sydney, Mr Duncan Passmore (pictured), will launch Australian Business Week at the school this coming Friday, September 11th. Mr Passmore is a chartered accountant by profession with over 40 years’ experience in business and education. He is an Associate Fellow of the Australian Marketing Institute and a Fellow of the Commercial Education Society of Australia. Mr Passmore aims to motivate and educate today’s young people and has a firm belief that everyone has the potential for success. At Passmores College he oversees the nurturing of that potential by encouraging all to honour ‘In Pursuit of Excellence’. It is this message he plans to share with Year 10 students as they begin the six day enterprise education program, Australian Business Week. A national program, now in its eighth year at the school, ABW engages students in a virtual world of business for a week and allows them to learn vital business, workplace and life skills along the way. Students form teams of 10 and assume management roles to run a virtual company, making important business decisions as they compete against their peers. The program replaces regular curriculum for the week, and includes a full day excursion to local businesses to maximise the students’ learning experience. Most of all, Australian Business Week is great fun! ABW culminates with a Trade Display on Friday, September 18th from 1.00pm to 2.00pm in the Phillips Building where students will showcase their business concept. Education institutions will also be in attendance to provide relevant careers information to students and parents who visit the Trade Display. Interested members of the school community are most welcome to attend. The Year 12 Student Leadership Committee organised the event with the assistance of the Interact team to raise funds for the SLC Leadership Retreat Bursary Fund, Rotary Sunrise and the Year 12 SCAS gift. The theme “Hippies versus Hipsters” saw Best Dressed Hippie awarded to Nicola Reardon and Liam Wallace for Best Hipster. I would like to publicly thank those very generous staff who gave up their valuable evening to assist with the social. Particular thanks goes to Gayle Houlahan, Jan Crombie (Rotary Sunrise) and the Interact team for cooking the BBQ. Dr. Stewart’s daughter won the best dancer again three years in a row with Lachlan Philpott in second place with the running man and worm grooves shown on the dancefloor. Thank you to everyone who came, danced and supported the event. It was a highly successful evening due to the dedicated efforts of the SLC team - I am so proud of you all. Fathers’ Day Breakfast Is there a better way to celebrate Fatherhood than with a BBQ bacon and egg burger? On Friday morning fathers and sons of Year 7, 8 and 9 gathered with some of the male teaching staff to celebrate Fatherhood as a prelude to Fathers’ Day this coming Sunday. Plenty of BBQ’d burgers helped kick start the day and there was some time to reflect on the special relationship a father has with his son. A reflection on God as our Heavenly Father wrapped up the morning’s proceedings as the dads headed off to work and the boys back into the fray of school life. A thought for you this Fathers’ Day. We don’t always get it right as dads, in fact, sadly, there are as many stories it seems of fathers getting it wrong as there are of them getting it right. Our culture seems at times fixated on belittling the role of dads or doing away with it all together. In the Bible, it is striking that Jesus often uses the title of ‘Father’ to describe God in terms of his relationship with his people. in 1 John 3:1 we are told that not only is God our Father, he is a Father who cannot help pouring out his blessings. John says ‘’See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called Children of God, and that is what we are.” God’s blessings to all the dads this Sunday. What a privilege it is to be a father and to know our Heavenly Father. St Columba Anglican School - SCAS Connections Page 10 Mr Scott Hazelton Assistant Chaplain [email protected] Secondary School Year 9 Marine Studies Excursion Mrs Clare Chapman Secondary Science [email protected] This week our Year 9 Marine Studies students visited the Port Stephens Shark and Ray Centre. Students had the opportunity of swimming with the sharks and rays as well as feeding them. CAFS Visit to St Thomas’ Soup Kitchen Mrs Natalie Littler & Mrs Marissa Orley Secondary PDHPE/CAFS Year 11 Community and Family Studies (CAFS) students recently volunteered their time at St Thomas’ Soup Kitchen in Port Macquarie. The purpose of the excursion was to gain an understanding of how the formal support service helps individuals and families manage change in their lives. Students were also able to gain an understanding of the diversity of people using the service and how the service satisfies needs of the individual and the community. We would like to thank the volunteers at the Soup Kitchen for their assistance on the day. Tournament of Minds Dr Stephen Mansfield TOMs Coordinator [email protected] On Sunday 23rd August two high school teams travelled to Coffs Harbour to participate in the regional finals of Tournament of Minds. They were young teams with little experience, consisting of students from Years 7-9, but they pulled together well at late notice. Both teams chose to compete in the Social Science challenge, where they had to present their decision to and the effect of erasing a famous figure from history. Team One chose to erase Beethoven, whilst Team Two opted for Leonardo Da Vinci. Our two teams represented SCAS with aplomb, with some of the feedback from judges “A solid performance - well done” and “A great performance! Answered the question well and brilliant reasoning for the removal of a historical figure”. Though we didn’t move through to the state finals, the students involved are keen to participate again next year. St Columba Anglican School - SCAS Connections Page 11 Secondary School High Tea for I.T. Mr Scott Hazelton Assistant Chaplain [email protected] Yesterday saw the second “HiTea” event at SCAS, with approximately 25 senior citizens enjoying delicious treats and technology assistance. The HiTea was catered and served by Mrs Amanda Cooper and Year 9 Hospitality students Cassandra Cains, Abby jenkins, Mekayla Newell and Annabelle Smead, while the technology support was offered by some of our Year 9 IST students. Mrs Meridith Ebbs presented a session on how to use Facebook and then the a high tea was served while the technology gurus circulated amongst the attendees and helped them with their many questions. This event is quickly becoming one of high popularity in our local community and is an initiative of the Citizenship pillar of excellence at SCAS. If you know anyone in the local community who would benefit from the next event, please feel free to have them send an email to Mr Scott Hazelton at the email address above. Science & Engineering Super Challenge Last Wednesday 32 of the finest minds in Year 10 travelled with Mrs Duncan and Mr Harrison to the University of Newcastle for the State final of the Science and Engineering Challenge. With good deal of weight on their shoulders (courtesy of an Australian final win and 4th place in recent years) our team worked hard on every task set. Mr Andrew Harrison & Mrs Joanne Duncan Secondary Science As you would expect in a state final the competition was intense. Hovercraft were floated, bridges built and model houses tested in cyclonic winds. After all the results were tallied St Columba placed third out of the eight schools on the second day of competition. We did not get to move on to the Australian final but the name of St Columba Anglican School was again held high - not just by the performance in challenge activities, but also by how our students behaved and participated with grateful enthusiasm. Congratulations on a huge team effort. Student Leadership 2016 Miss Watters Student Leadership Coordinator Fifty Two years ago Dr Martin Luther King made his famous I have a Dream speech on the 28th August, 1963 in Washington DC which helped to punctuate the modern civil rights movement in America. Recently we heard some thought provoking speeches where the Secondary School was called upon to cast their vote for our world famous leaders. Each student gave a five minute speech where they enlightened the Secondary School about their pledge to be a leader in 2016. Martin Luther King Jnr stated that the most persistent and urgent question of humanity is what are you doing for others? It is fitting to apply this to our wonderful candidates who are nominating themselves to serve others in our dynamic school community. This year’s Student Leadership Committee (SLC) have certainly put service back into their individual titles raising the bar for other young leaders to fulfill in 2016. Real leaders do not need badges to contribute and make a positive difference in the lives of other people. This year, fourteen courageous young leaders nominated for School Captains, Vice Captains and Prefects. The rigorous selection process meant that seven of these candidates were invited through to the final stage of the leadership process. Irrespective of the outcome, all Year 11 nominees have shown themselves to be leaders with or without the badges. I wish them all the very best and thank them for being brave SCAS warriors. I would also like to wish our House Captain nominees the very best of luck for their upcoming speeches. They will also be seeking support from the Secondary School in gaining the leadership positions of House Leaders. The 2015 SLC members will be announced at the Year.12 Farewell Assembly in Week 10. St Columba Anglican School - SCAS Connections Page 12 Performing Arts Spring Soiree Mr Mark Brown Director of Performing Arts [email protected] The Spring Soiree held at St Thomas’ Anglican Church earlier this week was a beautiful evening, with outstanding performances from our Vocal and String Ensembles, and solos from several of our HSC students. Theatre Bites On Saturday 31st August the Year 10 and 11 Drama students attended the 9th annual Theatre Bites HSC Drama Showcase at the Glasshouse. Theatre Bites is a collection of some of the best group and individual HSC Drama performance works from the region, from both private and public schools. It was a wonderful opportunity for the year 10 and 11 Drama students to see what HSC Drama students can create. Our very own Year 12 Drama students, Rebecca Gray and Amber Jenkins, performed their Individual Performances to a sold out audience. We look forward to attending and including SCAS students at next years 10th anniversary of Theatre Bites.
