INTRODUCTION
The papers of Ann Bryan Mariano McKay, a journalist and Vietnam War
correspondent, consist primarily of material relating to her work on the independent
newspaper, Overseas Weekly, and include newspapers, newspaper copy, photographs,
correspondence, and legal materials regarding a lawsuit over distribution of the
newspaper in Vietnam. Other materials in the collection document her work with
Vietnamese orphanages, as well as various aspects of both her personal and professional
life, including a return trip to Vietnam in 1995 with her adopted daughter.
DONOR INFORMATION
The papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Ann Bryan Mariano
McKay on 22 July 2003 (Accession No. 6008). Additions to the collection were donated
by Robert McKay on 5 April 2004 and 25 June 2004. Other additions were made by

and Media Collection.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Ann Bryan Mariano McKay was born Grace Ann Bryan on August 18, 1932 in
San Angelo, Texas to William Curtis Bryan and Annie Mae Moore Bryan. She graduated
from Ballinger High School in Ballinger, Texas in 1949. In 1951, she received an A.S.
degree from Tarleton State College in Stephenville, Texas. She went on to attend the
University of Texas, before graduating from Texas Technological College in 1953 with a
bachelor’s degree in journalism.
From 1953 to1957, Bryan worked at the San Angelo Standard-Times in Texas, as
a reporter and photographer before being promoted to editor of the women’s pages. In
1958, she moved to New York City and worked briefly as a stewardess before taking a
job in Germany in 1959 with the Overseas Weekly (OW), an independent tabloid aimed at
enlisted men.
While in Germany, Bryan worked as editor of the Overseas Family, a sister
publication of OW. In 1966, she went to Vietnam to launch a Pacific Edition of OW,
where as editor she ran a one-person operation while the newspaper was getting off the
ground. She worked at OW until 1971, when she returned to the U.S.
While in Vietnam, Bryan became heavily involved with the Viet Hoa Orphanage,
a facility run by Sister Robert and other Catholic nuns. In 1970, she adopted a daughter
from the orphanage, Jane Catherine Thai, who went by Katie, though she was also
affectionately known as “Buttons.”
During her time in Vietnam, Bryan met Frank Mariano who was serving in the
Army. They married in San Francisco on September 5, 1972. Around this time, Frank
Mariano adopted Ann’s daughter. The family returned to Vietnam later that year and

adopted a second daughter, Anna Francesca Hoa “Mai” Mariano, in 1973. She was
called Hoa when she was young and Mai when she became older.
Upon their return to Vietnam, both Frank and Ann Mariano worked for ABC
News, while Ann also did freelance work. Ann also continued working with the Viet
Hoa Orphanage and other orphanages as she assisted families in the U.S. and Canada
during their adoptions of Vietnamese children. In 1974, the Mariano family moved to
Hong Kong after ABC News closed the Saigon Bureau of its Southeast Asian Office.
During April 1975, Ann was in Vietnam to cover Operation Babylift as thousands of
orphans were airlifted out of Vietnam. She was one of the last Americans evacuated
from Saigon before the city fell.
In 1975, the Mariano family moved back to the U.S. Shortly thereafter, Frank
Mariano suffered from heart problems and died on August 8, 1976 in Washington, D.C.
Katie Mariano died September 7, 1983 after battling a brain tumor for three years.
During the late 1970s, Ann Mariano began writing for the Washington Post and
remained there until her retirement in 1996. One of her last assignments for the
newspaper involved returning to Vietnam with her daughter Mai.
Ann Mariano married Robert McKay on June 7, 2001, and they lived in
Massachusetts until her death on February 25, 2009.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Ann Bryan Mariano McKay Papers largely consist of materials relating to her
work at the Overseas Weekly, and include newspapers, newspaper copy, correspondence,
and photographs.
The papers also document McKay’s work with Vietnamese orphanages during the
Vietnam War and various other aspects of both her personal and professional life. The
papers have been arranged into the following nine series:
Overseas Weekly, Pacific Edition
Other Overseas Media Publications
Overseas Media Legal Files
Professional
Southeast Asia and Vietnam Files
Vietnamese Orphans and Orphanages
Personal
Family
Audiovisual
The Overseas Weekly, Pacific Edition (OWP) series is arranged alphabetically
and then chronologically by type of material. The series includes newspapers and
newspaper copy, as well as correspondence, news photographs, and story files. Founded
in Europe in 1950 by Marion von Rospach and four others, OW and its sister publications
were published by the Overseas Media Corporation (OMC). When Marion von Rospach
died in October 1969, majority ownership of OMC passed to her mother, Ethel Morrow,
who subsequently sold the business to Joseph B. Kroesen in 1970. The corporation shut
down sometime in the mid-1970s. The newspaper covered various aspects of military

page 3
life, ranging from hard-hitting exposes to human interest stories. Major staples of the
paper included coverage of military courts martial, R&R pieces, and sexy pinups.
The copy consists mainly of news copy or story drafts, but also includes notes,
internal correspondence, newspaper clippings, and military press releases. Regular
columns included man-on-the-street interviews; “Hotline,” a series of short news
snippets; “Green Machine,” a satire on military life; and several R&R columns on
Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Sydney, Australia. The man-on-the-street interviews with
troops concern a wide range of issues, some of which include curfew, combat pay,
laundry service, presidential nominations, the possibility of troop withdrawal, and
marijuana usage, among many others. Donald Pratt began writing the “Green Machine”
column under the pseudonym Donald Essen; Donald Hirst took over the column in
August 1970. All of the copy produced by the staff in Vietnam did not make it into the
published paper.
Among the April 1967 copy is correspondence that was found on a deceased
member of the Viet Cong. Addressed to his mother and brother, the letters have holes
through the center believed to be caused by a bullet. Both letters, along with an
identification card and a list of goods received, have been translated into English.
The general correspondence documents the setting up of the Pacific edition,
including acquiring licenses, printing and shipping of the paper, gaining authorization to
military post exchanges, as well as issues of personnel, distribution, circulation,
advertising, and censorship. The general correspondence also contains a large amount of
information regarding finances and editorial policy.
The news photographs consist of prints, as well as contact sheets and negatives.
The OWP newspapers are available on microfilm. The originals have also been
retained. The series contains no newspapers for 1968, and there are other smaller gaps as
well. The earlier newspapers contain more European coverage than later editions. The
newspapers also contain a number of syndicated columns, as well as sports and
entertainment coverage from outside Vietnam. Loose leaf comic sheets are inserted
inside most of the newspapers, as are mail order shoppers and advertisements. Not all of
the advertisements have been retained, only examples of each advertising flier.
The story files contain notes, article drafts and miscellaneous resources for news
stories. The systems report for the Hong Kong branch of OMC contains
recommendations for the branch’s accounting system. The miscellaneous material
contains Ann Bryan’s business cards as editor of the Pacific edition, as well as invitations
for cocktails to celebrate her and another employee’s departure from Vietnam.
The Other Overseas Media Publications series contains material from a
variety of OMC publications. The series includes articles written by McKay as a
correspondent in Vietnam for the Overseas Family and the European edition of OW, as
well as copies of the following newspapers, all of which are available on microfilm and
computer disc: Overseas Family, Overseas Hi-Fi Stereo Shopper, Overseas Photo
Shopper, and the Overseas Weekly, European Edition (OWE). The series also includes
staff photographs, story drafts, and a brief history of OWE.
The OWE newspapers contain some overlap in news coverage with OWP;
however, the majority of its content is different from that of OWP and focuses on U.S.
troops stationed in Europe. One column featured only in OWE is “OW’s Good Guy
C4009 McKay, Ann Bryan Mariano (1932-2009), Papers, c. 1892-2009
page 4
Award,” which recognized ordinary enlisted men for their acts of heroism, honesty, and
human kindness.
The miscellaneous material includes Marion von Rospach’s obituary and a
reprint of "Getting Along with OW," an article written by Col. Douglas Lindsey. The
material also includes Edwin A. Walker’s pamphlet “The Walker Story of a Major
General Pro Blue.” In 1961, OWE published an expose concerning Walker’s political
indoctrination of troops in his division through the distribution of anti-Communist
literature from the John Birch Society, a controversy which eventually resulted in his
resignation from the Army.
The Overseas Media Legal Files series contains materials relating to Overseas
Media, et al. vs. Robert S. McNamara. The case dealt with the struggle of the Overseas
Media Corporation to gain access to military post exchanges in order to distribute OWP
in Vietnam. In 1970, the name of the lawsuit was changed to Overseas Media, et al. vs.
Melvin Laird, as McNamara was no longer Secretary of Defense. Later that year, the
lawsuit was dropped altogether.
The material in this series consists of depositions by McKay and Klaus Heymann,
as well as affidavits, a brief for the appellants, and a joint appendix, along with
considerable correspondence dealing with matters of circulation and distribution. The
distribution journal contains a chronicle of the obstacles the newspaper faced in gaining
distribution throughout Vietnam. “The Overseas Weekly Story” is a bound compilation
of materials relating to the lawsuit. The photographs of military PX newsstands were
taken in an effort to demonstrate that lack of display space was not a valid excuse to
exclude the newspaper from being sold at military post exchanges.
The Professional series contains material related to McKay’s other work as a
journalist, including at the Washington Post and the San Angelo Standard-Times, as well
as freelance work for Asia Magazine and the Children’s Relief Fund. The series also
contains news photographs taken during the Vietnam War, a partial draft of a speech
concerning working as a woman journalist during the war, press cards, and miscellaneous
story files which contain article drafts and resource materials.
A large portion of the series contains material documenting McKay’s return trip
to Vietnam in 1995 with her daughter Mai, and includes photographs, a travel journal
written by Mai, and article drafts. The trip was to result in a story for the Washington
Post; however, it appears to never have been published.
The Southeast Asia and Vietnam Files series contains a variety of material
relating to Vietnam and Southeast Asia. While most of the series appears to be resource
material, much of the material could be either personal or professional in nature. Contact
sheets, which make up a large portion of the photographic material, contain both personal
and professional images.
As for material clearly of a professional nature, it is unclear whose work it is
and/or for what agency. Most of the material likely pertains to McKay’s work as a
foreign correspondent either for OWP, ABC News, or as a freelance journalist; however
some of the material may be from Frank Mariano’s work at ABC News.
The Vietnamese Orphans and Orphanages series contains files on a number of
American and Canadian families that McKay assisted during their adoption of
Vietnamese children, as well as families she met through her work with Sister Robert’s
Viet Hoa Orphanage. These files mostly contain correspondence and photographs. The
C4009 McKay, Ann Bryan Mariano (1932-2009), Papers, c. 1892-2009
page 5
series also contains a photograph album and miscellaneous loose photographs of families
with their adopted children which Sister Robert gave to McKay just before the fall of
Saigon in April 1975. Other material in this series includes newsletters, news articles,
adoptive resources, and materials relating to Operation Babylift.
The Personal series contains the personal papers of McKay and includes
photographs, correspondence, scrapbooks and journals. The scrapbooks cover her high
school and college years and include numerous photographs. The journals have been
written in a variety of notebooks, as well as on loose leaf pages. The entries are not
entirely chronological as it appears Mariano switched back and forth between different
notebooks. A large portion of the journals deals with her daughter Katie’s struggle
against cancer and the grieving process after her death.
The Family series contains correspondence and family photographs, including
photos and slides from Ann and Frank Mariano’s wedding. The series also contains the
papers of Mae Moore Bryan, Frank Mariano, Katie Mariano, and Anna “Mai” Mariano.
Their papers include memorial materials, correspondence, journals, photographs, a
scrapbook, and adoption records. Other materials in the series include a Bryan family
history, newspaper clippings, and birth, death, and marriage certificates.
The Audiovisual series is comprised mainly of audio cassettes, as well as one reel
of 16 mm film of Frank Mariano doing a news report. The audio cassettes have been
arranged by category and then loosely chronological within each category as a number of
cassettes have segments from several different time periods on them. The family audio
cassettes contain messages from Mae and Curtis Bryan to the Mariano family in Vietnam,
as well as messages to Ann from Frank and Katie. The series also contains interviews
conducted by McKay and news reports and interviews conducted/given by Frank
Mariano. Some of Frank Mariano’s reports and interviews overlap onto the following
audio cassette.
The miscellaneous cassettes contain a conversation between Ann and Frank
Mariano regarding plans for a book on Ann’s experiences in Vietnam; an audio message
from Do Van Kien, a Vietnamese friend of the Mariano family who was a refugee and
emigrated to the U.S. after the fall of Saigon; an audio message from Johanna Spicuzza,
an Ohio woman who worked with Ann on adoptions of Vietnamese children; and
interviews conducted by Frank and Ann Mariano at a rehabilitation center in Vietnam.
Some of the miscellaneous cassettes contain a mix of both personal and professional
segments.
