JUNE 2016 NEWSLETTER
Dear Members
We are now at the end of our financial year and the Treasurer Harry Young is very busy
finalising the accounts to go to the auditor. Harry has done a tremendous job for 5 years
- 5 years that have been extremely busy with all the innovations and renovations that the
committee has accomplished. Harry needs to retire now and although we have put
feelers out for a member with accounting experience to take on this responsibility we
have had no one willing to offer their services to the club. Harry has prepared the ground
well, setting out the duties of the treasurer - it is a lengthy list - and he has made some
changes to make things easier than when he took over from Ann Ryan by recently
purchasing the Xero programme. Because we have no volunteer to do the full
treasurer’s job we are intending to employ a young woman with accounting experience to
do the donkey work the majority of which can be done from home on the computer. We
have someone at the reasonable rate of $25 per hour and expect this will cost no more
than $3000 p.a. and perhaps a great deal less.
Barbara Egerton has been a great help to Harry by collecting the table money and doing
the banking each week - I do hope Barbara will continue to do this job - a job made
somewhat easier by the the introduction of session vouchers which mean a great deal
less small cash to count. I would like to encourage all members to please purchase the
session vouchers ($50 + 1 free for 10, or $20 for 4) or to use a note rather than small
change (it is also a great help to the directors). Purchase of the vouchers is now done at
your table by filling in the amended table slip with the required number of vouchers which
the director will deliver to you during the session.
The appointed Treasurer will be in a controlling position, liaising with the employee and
reporting to the committee. There is a possibility that an existing committee member will
have to take on this job but if anyone is interested please contact and talk to Harry.
Nominations for the AGM 28 August: During the next month nomination forms will be
available for members to submit to the Secretary. There will be vacancies on the
Committee and any member who is interested should not hesitate to come forward and
offer to serve. If you do not wish to be on the committee but feel you have something to
offer in any capacity also let a committee member know - we have many positions of
responsibility that are undertaken by members independently of the committee who do a
myriad of very necessary jobs on your behalf - some small, some big - and we need all
the help we can get to spread the load so it is not overwhelming. Office experience, help
with the catering, the person that at the end of the session makes sure the room is left
tidy, or perhaps you could offer to be the partner arranger on duty on the social days. Let
us know.

Improver/Refresher Lessons Reminder: Gillian Trotman will carry on with a second
course for the beginners that came to the Tuesday Evening Lessons. $50 for 10 lessons
commencing 7.15 p.m. 12th July. Enrol with Mandy MacLean 486 3099. Any
members are welcome to attend to brush up on the conventions, and play techniques.
8B Pairs Tournament 16th July Reminder: 5 Sections - Open/Intermediate,
Open/Junior, Intermediate/Intermediate, Intermediate/Junior, Junior/Junior. Good prizes.
Entry form up on the notice board.
Wednesday Evening Teams: In June the club hosted two teams from the East Coast
Bays Bridge Club to play in our President’s Teams Event of 4 sessions which were hotly
contested and made most enjoyable by the infusion of players from another club enabling
us to have 8 teams competing. North Shore teams did however claim the first 3 placings.
Entry is required to take part in the
Swiss Cup Swiss Pairs 2nd series, starting 27th July and end of every month
3 Day Teams 6th, 13th and 20th July and
Restricted Teams 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th August - forms up on the board.
Thursday Afternoon Junior Session August: The Sylvan Pairs in your Programme
Book have been extended into a Competition inviting members of other clubs to come
along and join in so that our juniors have a bigger group to play with - so junior members
make a big effort and come to this session. We really wish to encourage those of you
that just come to the social sessions and never move on to a competitive session to try it
out and strive to improve your bridge ability - remember it is very good for your brain to
be working it hard!
And another Reminder there are two more Thursday Sessions Restricted Winter Ladder
- 22nd September and 1st December. This means that an Open Player must play with a
different Intermediate, junior or novice member in 4 of the 5 sessions for any individual to
be eligible for the Lake Pupuke Trophy. Of the 3 sessions already played 16 members
are still eligible. Maybe some of the Open and Intermediate players could invite a junior.
Lion Foundation Sponsorship: We are very pleased to announce that we have
received a grant of $6000 from the Foundation which will pay for three quarters of the
cost of purchasing the Electronic Scoring and Bidding Tablets. Getting the system going
and training our directors (then members) will keep Wayne Benefield busy for the rest of
the year so that we will start the New Year with the tablets and the new Compass Scoring
system. Wayne has been demonstrating the trial tablet to members and I know many
who were doubtful about using them are delighted how easy it will be.
Questionnaire: A third of the members returned the questionnaire sent out last month
with some interesting suggestions which will be followed up. Where a direct answer was
asked for, the majority of members were in favour of the status quo re times and type of
sessions with the exception that there was a strong preference for abandoning “themed”
Social Sundays. Thank you to all those who took part in the survey.
Patricia Moore, President.
