2011 Iron Butt Rally, The Finish
Friday, July 1, 2011
Peter Behm has won the 2011 Iron Butt Rally. Peter pulled himself from 13th place at the
end of leg 2 by completing the Four Corners Tour and scoring seven state capitals on the
last leg. With a total of 24,428 points, Peter was just 319 points ahead of Eric Jewell,
who finished in 2nd place with 24,109 points.
2011 Iron Butt Rally Winner Peter Behm at the Finish in Ontario, California
Jewell’s second place finish involved a completely different strategy, concentrating on
capitals and foregoing the Four Corners Tour.

In 3rd place, 789 points behind Behm, was Jim Frens with 23,639 points. By coming in
71 minutes late, Jim incurred 1,420 penalty points. More memorable than his 3rd place
finish will be the record he set for the greatest distance ever ridden during an Iron Butt
Rally: 14,185 miles. Frens’ route was unique in that he was the only rider to document
Key West on leg 2, leaving him extra time for state capitals on the final leg.
4th place, with 23,476 points was Roger Sinclair, one of the three riders that included the
state of Alaska. Unlike Dick Peek, the other finisher that scored Alaska, Sinclair
concentrated on capitals instead of the Four Corners Tour and was able to score more
points with that strategy.
In 5th place with 23,172 points was Curt Gran, who scored the Four Corners Tour plus
lots of state capitals. Curt’s 13,857 mile ride was the second longest in Iron Butt Rally
history.

I’ll post an epilog providing more details in a few days. I will no doubt be posting
corrections to typographical errors in this report before that. There will be an article on
the rally in the next edition of the Iron Butt Magazine.
