Dear Neighbors and Friends,
It has been my distinct pleasure to help meet the human service needs
of our area by serving as a Community Chest allocations volunteer and
then a board member over the past eight years. Although there have been
many exciting and impressive changes at the Chest during this time, the
practice of raising and distributing funds for residents in need remains
the heart and soul of the organization. I am so pleased to let you know
that, during the 2007 – 2008 campaign year, we were able to distribute
over a half million dollars to non-profit agencies and programs that serve
our community.
…during the
2007 – 2008
campaign year,
we were able to
distribute over a
half million dollars
to non-profit agencies
and programs that
serve our community.
We also received our first significant donor gifts for the Chest’s new field
of interest funds, which were established in 2007 to target specific areas
of support both within and outside of our traditional human service lens.
We are most grateful to three generous community members who helped
us launch this new endeavor by making significant contributions to
educational scholarships, camp scholarships and to the environment.
It was a busy year in the fundraising area as well for the staff and board
as we hosted an online auction and live gala event, and a triathlon
relay race. Both events were a lot of fun, raised additional funds for
our campaign and special funds and involved hundreds of volunteers
and participants. We are fortunate to have so many Community Chest
supporters who give so much of themselves for the common good. My
deepest thanks to each of you.
Although my tenure on the board is now complete, the Chest will always
hold special significance for me because it enabled me to learn about and
assist so many well-deserving organizations. If you have ever considered
volunteering at the local level, the Community Chest is a great place to
begin. Your support – both financially and through volunteerism – will
be truly appreciated by the entire community.
Best regards,
Amy Jane Newell

he Community Chest annual
triathlon on June 1st was a fun
relay race involving 32 teams
from Concord, Carlisle and Maynard.
Everyone pitched in this year to make
the FUNdraiser a great success as it
was a logistical challenge in many ways.
With the closing of Flint’s Bridge on
Monument Street just two weeks prior
to the June 1st event and the National
Park Service discouraging race spectators
from using the North Bridge, the route
was modified and participants had to
plan new winning strategies. However,
the weather cooperated and the relay race
went off without a hitch, resulting in
all teams crossing the finishing line and
contributing financially to human services
in Concord, Carlisle and Maynard.
Other winning teams included:
• Fastest women’s team – Ms. Quitos
• Fastest men’s team – Mosquitos
• Fastest mixed team – Concord Outfitters
• Fastest youth team – Mosquito Magnets
• Fastest corporate team – SolidWorks Competitive
• Fastest agency – Gaining Ground

Senior Programs in Abundance
T
here’s nothing retiring about
seniors in Concord and Carlisle.
With so many new programs
and services cropping up in the area,
seniors looking to stay busy, healthy and
involved can choose from a growing list
of activities and resources. And with
financial assistance from the Community
Chest, local agencies and volunteers work
hard to identify and meet the needs of this
fast growing population so that seniors do
not have to travel far for services.
The Concord Council on Aging’s new
Outreach Counselor, whose position
is partially funded by the Community
Chest, enjoys visiting local seniors who
may be suffering from self-neglect,
dementia or illness. “The best part of my
job is meeting seniors in their homes and
making them aware of services,” said
Eileen Ralske, Concord COA outreach
counselor. “I feel I’m contributing
somehow to the quality of their lives.”
The Concord COA has also launched the
Concord on Call program that matches
seniors with volunteers for doctor visits.
The volunteers provide transportation
and help in remembering any medical

advice or information given during
the visit. The Safe Meds at Home
program dispatches trained volunteers
to help seniors organize medication,
a service that is not available in most
Massachusetts towns.
“ We are very fortunate
that (the Chest) believes
local community agency
funding is a valuable tool
in reaching out directly to
the community members.
”
Kathy Mull, Director, Carlisle Council on Aging
There is also a large increase in services
for seniors in Carlisle – the third fastest
growing elder population (by percentage)
in the state. With 17 percent of Carlisle
residents over sixty, it is challenging to
find meeting space for programs, but
the Carlisle COA is creative. Beginning
in September, the Carlisle COA and
Minuteman Senior Services are
partnering to offer a Congregate Meals
senior luncheon which will be served
by Carlisle volunteers at local churches
and will enable seniors to enjoy eating
freshly prepared food and visiting with
friends while listening to educational
programs. Additional new programs
include a Pre-retirement Information
series for residents aged 45-60 and the
Healthy Woman series. “Seniors seem to
really like social, cultural, and health and
fitness programs that they can receive
right here in Carlisle,” said Kathy Mull,
Carlisle COA executive director.
If seniors need services that are not
available where they live, they need
only look at the state level for additional
programs such as free Information and
Referral, Meals-on-Wheels, Healthy
Aging tips and information for seniors,
SHINE Health Benefits Counseling,
and an abundance of critical Home
Care and Caregiver Support Services
and Resources. Joan Butler, executive
director of Minuteman Senior Services,
wants seniors to know that “it is a
myth that services are only available
to low income families. All seniors and
caregivers have equal access to important
resources across Massachusetts through
our agency.”
While Minuteman Senior Services
focuses on helping seniors age in their
own homes and communities and
supporting caregivers in their challenging
roles, the COAs are more oriented toward
programs and outreach services. But
these critical agencies always work in
tandem to ensure seniors are safe and
healthy by sharing information via
phone calls and quarterly meetings. The
Community Chest is proud to provide
annual financial support to these
local agencies (as well as Cooperative
Elder Services and FISH) that offer
senior services. Through these caring
organizations, seniors can enjoy a
flourishing set of activities, programs and
events right in their local communities.

Major Gifts Help Launch New Funds
n June 12, 2008 at the Concord
Town House, the ConcordCarlisle Community Chest
awarded $517,000 to 35 human service
programs from the 2007-2008 annual
campaign season. The morning included
introductions by the president of the
board and the election of five new Chest
board members and four new overseers.
Award letters were then handed out by
allocation team captains to each agency
recipient. For a complete listing of all
agencies and programs please visit the
Community Chest website at
www.communitychest.org.
The Community Chest was pleased to receive three
substantial donations this year for the newly created Field
of Interest funds – two for local scholarships and one for
the environment. These generous donors were interested
in going beyond the Chest’s annual fund to help support
other areas of need.
Photo: Chest board member and
allocations chair Adam Winstanley with
Ellen Weisstein, Executive Director of
First Connections.
With a minimum donation of $10,000, contributions that
target scholarships, elderly, youth, arts, the environment
and other areas of donor interest, are put to good use over
the course of three years. Field of Interest funds are donor
driven but administered by an advisory group and the
Chest board is ultimately responsible for making grants.
An annual fee of 1.5% is applied to each fund, consistent
with other community foundation fees.
The initial contributions have helped launch a new
and important way to give back to the community. For
example, scholarships were given to children from the
Boston Metco program to attend summer camp at Concord
Recreation. Additionally, children who were unable to
afford Concord Youth Theatre’s programs were granted
scholarships. And new sneakers were purchased for
families in need.

2008 Auction Donors, Sponsors, Volunteers and Attendees
Biennial Auction Reaches New Audiences
E
very two years, the Community Chest hosts a festive
auction evening where friends and neighbors gather to
socialize, dine and bid on many extraordinary items
and services. This year, an online auction of more than 100
items was added to the fun so that more people could participate
for three weeks prior to the gala event.
Most of the auction items – online, silent or live - were
generously donated by residents and local businesses, helping to
make the event a financial success. There were exotic vacations,
fine art by local artists, prime sports and entertainment tickets,
spa treatments and many unique house and garden services.
The April 1st gala evening had a “Wheel of Philanthropy”
theme complete with a game-show style spinning wheel where
prizes were won. Participants enjoyed cocktails and hors
d’oeuvres while bidding on dozens of silent auction items.
Ultimately, a four-course dinner was served and the live auction
got underway with auctioneer Douglas Stinson at the wheel. By
the end of the evening, more than $130,000 was raised for the
Chest’s Millennium fund and new field of interest funds.

Healthy Business Partnerships
L
ocal businesses play a vital role in supporting local
need when they donate to human services through
the Community Chest. Since 1993, Concord Hillside
Medical Associates (CHMA), a practice of Harvard Vanguard
Medical Associates, has been a generous Chest sponsor. But
its commitment to the town of Concord goes much deeper.
“There is a remarkable health infrastructure and variety of
human services in the Concord area,” said Ronald Kwon,
CHMA Medical Director. “And we are fully committed to going beyond basic medical care to being an integral part of this
community’s well being.”
CHMA is a nonprofit medical practice that began as a cottage
industry of internists and pediatricians in the early 1980’s.
Over the years, it has added satellite offices in Harvard and
Sudbury, and today serves 33,000 patients annually. From
the beginning, there has been a tradition of giving back. “The
health of the community is critical to CHMA and there is a
direct correlation with what the Chest does,” said Dr. Kwon.
The ability to support several organizations through a single
funding source is a distinct benefit. “Concord Hillside gives
annually because we know our money is used well through
the Community Chest,” added Bruce Walton, CHMA Practice
Administrator.
Sponsors like CHMA positively impact the wellness of residents when contributions are made through the Chest’s annual campaign. The Chest is very appreciative of all the financial
and gift-in-kind support from local businesses.

Volunteer Service Awards
T
he 2008 Concord-Carlisle
Community Chest
Distinguished Volunteer
Service Award was awarded to five
young individuals in May who have
significantly committed to volunteerism
in the area of human services. The
Board of Directors of the ConcordCarlisle Community Chest congratulates
the following teens for giving back:
Rebecca Flint (above left) for
volunteering with the therapeutic
horseback riding program at the Vermont
Adaptive Ski and Sports program; Isabel
Zellmann-Rohrer (above middle) for
working 160 hours at Emerson Hospital
on the Transport Team and in the
Community Services Office;
Nina Andrews for participating
in several youth programs through
First Parish Church including service
trips to Transylvania, Council on
Aging work days, and fundraising for
Katrina victims; William Cavanagh
for volunteering over 500 hours with
CCTV and consistently helping to keep
things running smoothly at the station;
and David Rayson (above right) for
redesigning the CCHS 2volunteer
website and for providing computer
tutoring to Council on Aging seniors.
These students have made significant
contributions to Concord or Carlisle and
the Community Chest commends their
selflessness and generosity.
