CHANGES ARE COMING TO THE HVHC HOUSE In an effort to provide the greatest possible support to those with differing physical abilities, we have begun the process of identifying appropriate renovations to our offices in Ellsworth. We are working with Sealander Architects to ensure a comprehensive and long-range vision is incorporated into the planning process. When the plans are at the appropriate stage we will be conducting a capital campaign to enable completion of this project. If you would like more information or to support this process from the ground up, please call our offices at 207-667-2531. Hospice News Spring 2015 Page 2 New Faces (and Places) at HVHC Emilie Hermans joined our staff in Febr uar y as our new Office Manager. Emilie has been enthusiastically welcomed into her new position as Office Manager at HVHC, and the feeling seems mutual. “I am very happy to join HVHC as the new office manager and be a part of such a wonderful organization. I am impressed by the dedication of the staff and volunteers that I have witnessed in my brief time here so far.” Emilie's background is in office management and bookkeeping, though she has spent the last seven years raising her children and running a landscaping business. This has prepared her well for the multi-tasking required in this position. She has hit the ground running (and shoveling!) and is juggling preparations for many HVHC programs that are currently on the horizon. Welcome Emilie the next time you call or visit the office. Intern Katie Harriman is wor king with us dur ing this spr ing semester . She will gr aduate in May from the University of Maine at Augusta in Mental Health & Human Services with minors in Geriatrics and Grief, Loss and Trauma. Katie’s interests and enthusiasm make a great fit with our mission and programs. Katie completed the Patient Care Volunteer training this fall and has this to say about her work with us: “I am extremely thrilled that I was able to get an internship with HVHC, it is a great pleasure to be able to work with so many dedicated individuals. I feel exceedingly blessed that I have been given this opportunity, and I know that the knowledge I gain from this experience will be a valuable asset for me as I continue to work alongside of the aging population.” Welcome Katie! Program Director Becky Pease (shown her e wear ing her festive holiday hat ☺) moved from the position of Office Manager, where she had served HVHC for the past two-and-a-half years, to Program Director as of January 1, 2015. Becky had been serving one day per week in the Program Director role since Gerry Gregersen, our former Program Director who retired in December, went to a fourday schedule a year ago, so the transition in this critical position has gone very smoothly. Becky is well-known to our volunteers, and many have expressed their views that this transition makes a lot of sense for HVHC. Becky, too, has shared her enthusiasm for this new venture. “It is exciting to step into the role of Program Director. I love HVHC, its mission, my colleagues and the many amazing volunteers!” We believe our volunteers and those we serve feel the same way. Thank you, Becky, for all your good work! Cost for the hospice volunteer training is $75, and cost for the professional training is $150. Preregistration by March 23 and a pre-course interview are required for both training programs. Some partial scholarships are available on a first-come, first -served basis. THANK YOU FOR YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT! The following supporters provided financial gifts to HVHC during the fiscal year from July, 2013 to June, 2014. In our Spring, 2014 Hospice V olunteer News, we shared a list of supporters who had provided “Gifts In-Kind” over the previous year. We benefit from all kinds of support - shared time, talent and commodities, and we are grateful for these gifts. In this newsletter we are sharing the names of those who have provided financial gifts in support of our services during the preceding fiscal year. It is only through the generosity of these individuals and businesses that we are able to reach those in need of our care. Supporters of the 2014 Hospice Regatta of Maine follow this list on page 6. We make every effort to record and report gifts from our supporters accurately. However, if we have missed someone who should be listed here, or if you are aware of an error, please notify us at 207-667-2531 or [email protected]. Thank you for your support. Thank You for all you do to make our service possible! Page 7 Our Medical Hospice Partners We often receive questions about “how hospice works” that come from people who are familiar with a different model of hospice care provided in other areas of the country. Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County is pleased to partner with several medical hospice providers in our region.* We are independent and licensed by the State of Maine as a Volunteer Hospice program. Volunteers are mandated by Medicare and other insurers to be part of the team of caregivers offered to a hospice patient and family. In our area, these medical hospice providers (the programs offering Physicians, Nurses, Home Health Aides, Social Workers, Physical Therapists and Chaplains) contract with HVHC for the Volunteer members of the team. We are grateful for these relationships and believe this is an ideal arrangement to ensure residents of Hancock County receive the best possible hospice care. The programs in light blue are those based in the Bangor region and beyond. We co-serve with these providers when they are serving a patient in Hancock County. Does This Look Familiar to You? In last year’s Hospice V olunteer N ews, we tried something new - we tucked a donation envelope inside the newsletter, and the generosity of our supporters was so great. We are doing this again with this newsletter, but we don’t want it to feel like “Double Dipping,” so if you have already sent in an Annual Appeal donation, please know your support is much appreciated! And, if you would like to support our work with a gift at this time, we hope the enclosed envelope makes it easy for you.
