Chiroubles
Brouilly
The vines of Chiroubles start at where
Fleurie and Morgon join up and then
sneak their way upwards towards the
mountain passes. At its best, Chiroubles
is refreshing, invigorating and sappy.
The largest of the crus. The wines are
uncomplicated, fruity and sappy. Its biggest
market by far is Paris, where it is seen
as the perfect bistro red.

Morgon
A large area which produces rich and
structured wines that are especially food
friendly. Like Fleurie, it is home to several
distinguished lieu dits, each with their
own flavours and charms. The best of these
is Côte du Py, where granite is replaced by
schists. The wines here are more complex
and have a minerally character.

And so finally to one of the stars of

This is the least well known of the
crus and even today much of it is

between Morgon and Brouilly it
sometimes shares characteristics of
both: richer than Brouilly but less
elaborate than Morgon.

Beaujolais and The Ten Crus of Beaujolais North to South
Beaujolais-Villages
Value for money
The crus’ tiny variations of soil type, exposition and climate create (at least) ten further
variations on the theme. All shone in 2011.
Straight Beaujolais from the south shows
the gamay grape at its simplest, while the
named villages like Emeringes present a
wine with a little more character and
complexity, often close to cru quality but
invariably better priced.
Saint-Amour
One of the smallest of the crus and on
the border with Burgundy’s Saint-Véran.
The wines are generously flavoured,
sometimes a little rustic, and always
better with a few months in bottle.

what Beaujolais is all about
2011 is a wonderful vintage in Beaujolais. The wines, not as tannic as
some of the 2009s, but richer and more substantial than the 2010s,
show charm, poise and the opportunity for immediate enjoyment.
They are very special.
dense, multi-layered wines combined the seriousness of a great
vintage with undoubted charm – and Côte de Brouilly. The latter
is a tiny cru that rarely gets the limelight, but which deserves to
in this vintage, having produced wines that are simply magical.
The gamay grape needs heat at critical times, and 2011 went out
of its way to appease it at the right moments. A spring heatwave led
to early flowering and after a wet July the sun returned, resulting
in blazing conditions at harvest. The wines feel ‘sunny’ but also
speak very clearly of where they come from.
A nuanced view
Though the grape, gamay, remains the same, each of the ten
Beaujolais crus and the numerous other villages make wines
with different nuances and characters. 2011 is a fine vintage
for wine drinkers to get to know them, and three mixed cases
provide tempting opportunities to do so.
Fine, distinctive wines were made everywhere, but two crus deserve
particular plaudits, reflected in the greater number of wines we have
bought from them for this offer. They are Moulin-à-Vent – whose

The grandest of the crus with the
weight and complexity worthy of good
Burgundy or Rhône. The soil is granitic
with seams of manganese and iron, said
to account for the wines’ added colour
and depth. The best have the ability to
gain in complexity over time. Excitingly,
2011 was a great vintage here.
A White Beaujolais to try
The grape is chardonnay and it is
becoming more popular in Beaujolais.
Burgundy’s Mâconnais is not far away,
yet the style is different: white
Beaujolais is lighter with greater
tension and freshness, even in this
warm vintage.
